Quick facts
- Professional scope
- Under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021, a physiotherapy professional examines and investigates movement or functional problems and provides treatment and advice for dysfunction, disability, healing and pain from trauma or disease, using modalities such as exercise, mobilisation/manipulation, and electrical and thermal agents.
- A regulated allied-health profession
- The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021 provides the national statutory framework for standards of education and services, assessment of institutions, and Central and State Registers for allied and healthcare professionals.
- Typical central recruitment benchmark
- In Railway Recruitment Board CEN 04/2024, Physiotherapist Grade II was advertised at Pay Level 6 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy and two years of practical physiotherapy experience in a government or private hospital with at least 100 beds. This is an example of a specific recruitment notice, not a universal rule for every employer.
- Registration may be required locally
- A 2024 draft recruitment-rule document for Delhi’s Health and Family Welfare Department specified registration with the Delhi Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Council within six months of joining. Candidates must check the applicable state council and the exact current vacancy notice.
- Pay context
- The 2024 RRB Physiotherapist Grade II notice listed Pay Level 6 with an initial pay figure of ₹35,400; Delhi’s 2024 draft rules also showed Level 6, ₹35,400–₹1,12,400. These are dated central/Delhi pay-matrix examples, and actual gross pay varies with employer, posting, allowances, service rules and later pay revisions.
Core clinical responsibilities
A government physiotherapist’s core work is clinical rehabilitation: assessing movement or functional impairment, selecting and delivering appropriate physiotherapy interventions, advising patients, and supporting recovery from trauma or disease. The statutory description of a physiotherapy professional expressly covers examination, appropriate investigation, treatment and advice for movement or functional dysfunction, disability, healing and pain, including exercise, mobilisation, manipulation, and electrical and thermal modalities.
- Assess functional limitations and document findings before and during treatment.
- Plan and deliver exercise-based, manual and physical-modality interventions within the professional role and local clinical protocols.
- Give patient and caregiver advice relevant to rehabilitation, function and continuing care.
- Work as part of the hospital or public-health care team; the precise duties, supervision arrangements and caseload are set by the employing facility and its recruitment/service rules.
How entry normally works
There is no single all-India recruitment pathway or one uniform eligibility rule for every government physiotherapist post. Candidates normally complete a recognised physiotherapy qualification, satisfy any experience and registration requirements in the particular notification, and compete through the recruiting body named by that employer—such as a Railway Recruitment Board, an AIIMS recruitment process, or a state/UT health department selection process.
For example, RRB’s CEN 04/2024 required a Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy plus two years’ practical experience for Physiotherapist Grade II. Delhi’s 2024 draft rules similarly proposed a bachelor’s degree, two years’ experience in a hospital with at least 100 beds, and council registration after joining. These examples demonstrate why applicants should treat the live notification—not a generic career guide—as controlling.
- Build the qualification and supervised clinical experience required by the target employer’s notice.
- Monitor official recruitment portals for central, railway, autonomous-institute, state and UT health-service vacancies.
- Read eligibility, age, reservation, experience, registration, document-verification and examination provisions in the specific notification.
- Apply only when the awarding institution, experience evidence and any registration status match the wording of that notice.
Skills to develop
The statutory scope points to the essential technical foundation: clinical examination and appropriate investigation; clinical reasoning around movement and function; therapeutic exercise; mobilisation/manipulation; and safe use of electrical and thermal agents. Government-hospital work also requires clear patient advice and accurate practice within institutional protocols.
- Functional assessment, goal setting and outcome documentation.
- Therapeutic exercise prescription and progression.
- Safe application of manual, electrical and thermal physiotherapy modalities.
- Communication with patients, families and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Careful adherence to employer protocols, referral pathways, records requirements and scope-of-practice rules.
Employing settings and service conditions
Government physiotherapist posts can sit in different public-sector systems rather than one single employer cadre. Official examples include Indian Railways’ Physiotherapist Grade II recruitment, AIIMS physiotherapist and junior-physiotherapist posts in a common recruitment examination, and the Delhi Health and Family Welfare Department’s physiotherapist cadre. Accordingly, the patient population, shift pattern, reporting structure, equipment and posting location depend on the hiring organisation and facility.
- Central-government and autonomous public hospitals or institutes.
- Railway health services.
- State and UT health-department hospitals and related public health facilities.
- Rehabilitation-focused posts whose titles may vary, such as physiotherapist, junior physiotherapist or multi-rehabilitation worker (physiotherapist).
Progression and further study
Career progression is cadre-specific: a vacancy’s recruitment rules determine whether advancement occurs through promotion, departmental selection, senior posts, deputation or a fresh competitive recruitment process. For example, Delhi’s 2024 draft rules described the physiotherapist post as 100% direct recruitment and did not specify a promotion feeder grade for that post; this should not be assumed to apply to other organisations. Further study such as an MPT can strengthen advanced clinical, teaching, research or specialised-rehabilitation capability, but it does not automatically replace the eligibility conditions in a government vacancy notice.
- Review the employer’s notified recruitment rules and service rules before assuming a promotion path.
- Use documented clinical experience and permitted continuing education to pursue specialised or senior opportunities where the employer’s rules recognise them.
- For senior, supervisory or teaching-oriented roles, check whether the specific employer requires postgraduate study, additional experience, registration or other credentials.
Compensation context
Pay should be read from the exact advertisement and applicable pay rules, not inferred from a job title alone. As dated examples, RRB CEN 04/2024 listed Physiotherapist Grade II at Level 6 with ₹35,400 initial pay, and Delhi’s 2024 draft physiotherapist rules listed Level 6 in the ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 pay matrix. Take-home salary is not the same as the matrix figure: it can change with admissible allowances, deductions, place of posting, appointment type and subsequent government pay decisions.
- Verify the pay level, appointment basis and allowance provisions in the live notification.
- Do not compare salary figures across central, state, autonomous-body, contractual and outsourced roles as if they were equivalent.
- Treat 2024 figures as historical recruitment context rather than a promise of current compensation.
