Quick facts

Typical format
The MPH is offered in India as a full-time postgraduate programme; current official examples at IIPHG and Manipal describe it as a two-year programme.
Eligibility pattern
Entry requirements are institution-specific, but current examples accept a recognised bachelor's degree in any discipline, with stated minimum marks of 50% at IIPHG's 2024 MPH intake brochure and 55% at Manipal for 2026 admission.
Core learning areas
Official curricula commonly include epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, disease prevention and management, health systems/management, health policy, social and behavioural sciences, environmental health, and programme monitoring or evaluation.
Applied component
MPH programmes may include field placements or internships and a dissertation, thesis, or capstone; the precise requirement depends on the institution and specialisation.
Indicative private-university fee context
For the 2026 intake at Manipal's PSPH, the published total MPH fee is ₹4,06,000 plus a one-time refundable ₹10,000 caution deposit. Fees, inclusions, scholarships, and revision dates vary substantially by institution and intake.

Eligibility: broad-entry degree, but check the institution's exact rules

An MPH is multidisciplinary rather than restricted to one clinical profession. This makes it a plausible postgraduate option after many of the listed parent pathways—including nursing, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, AYUSH, community science, and other recognised bachelor's degrees—provided that the target institution accepts the applicant's qualification.

Current official examples differ in their thresholds. IIPHG's MPH brochure states that applicants need a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, in India or abroad, with at least 50% marks; it lists medical and paramedical sciences, biological and veterinary sciences, management, social work, engineering, law, commerce, accounting, and communication among eligible backgrounds. Manipal's 2026 MPH page requires a bachelor's degree in any discipline, preferably health sciences, from a UGC-recognised university or equivalent recognised by the Government of India, with at least 55% aggregate marks.

Applicants with an MBBS earned outside India should not assume that the degree automatically meets every MPH provider's documentation or equivalence rules. They should obtain written confirmation from the admitting university and follow its requirements for recognition, transcripts, completion certificates, and any applicable immigration or nationality documentation.

  • A prior health qualification can be relevant for public-health experience and context, but it is not universally required.
  • Minimum marks, recognised-university wording, final-year eligibility, category provisions, and work-experience preferences vary by provider.
  • Do not treat a job title such as Community Health Officer, Staff Nurse, Nursing Officer, Government Physiotherapist, or Military Nursing Officer as a substitute for the required qualifying bachelor's degree unless the institution explicitly says so.

Duration and study mode

A two-year, full-time format is a common current model. IIPHG describes its MPH as a comprehensive two-year full-time programme, while Manipal describes a two-year, four-semester, full-time programme. However, an MPH title does not by itself guarantee identical duration, delivery mode, internship rules, or academic calendar across India.

Applicants should distinguish a degree-granting MPH from shorter public-health certificates, diplomas, and e-learning programmes, which can have different outcomes and may not satisfy an employer's or doctoral programme's requirement for a master's degree.

  • Confirm whether fieldwork, internship, dissertation, or capstone is compulsory and whether it extends the calendar duration.
  • Check the specific academic year's prospectus for start date, attendance rules, assessment, and maximum time allowed to complete the programme.

What an MPH teaches

The MPH develops population-health and health-system skills rather than training students for independent clinical practice. IIPHG groups its MPH curriculum across research and analytics; disease management; health systems; environmental health; communication; and social sciences. Its listed subjects include epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, advanced analytics, communicable and non-communicable diseases, reproductive and child health, public-health nutrition, health management, economics, financing, insurance, policy and law, national health programmes, environmental and occupational health, climate and urban health, health communication, programme management, social and behavioural sciences, and gender and health.

At Manipal, the learning-outcomes curriculum describes competency-based learning, fieldwork, assignments, and problem-based learning, with basic and advanced epidemiology and biostatistics, social and behavioural sciences, One Health, maternal health, global health policy, and non-communicable diseases and occupational health. Its programme page also describes internships or field placements, community projects, and a capstone project or thesis.

Course titles and elective tracks are not nationally standardised. Compare the actual semester-wise curriculum with the intended role: for example, candidates targeting epidemiology or monitoring and evaluation should look closely at quantitative methods, data analysis, surveillance, evaluation design, and practical placement opportunities.

  • Quantitative and research foundation: epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, and analytics.
  • Population-health content: infectious and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, environment, and occupational health.
  • Systems and implementation content: health management, economics and financing, policy and law, national programmes, communication, and programme management.
  • Applied learning may include internships, field placements, community projects, and dissertation/capstone work.

Admissions: institution-led selection, sometimes with an entrance route

There is no single admission mechanism that applies to every MPH in India. Institutions set their own eligibility, application process, selection method, seat availability, reservation implementation where applicable, and deadlines. Therefore, CUET-PG should be treated as a possible route only where a particular university names it, not as an automatic eligibility credential for every MPH.

For 2026, Manipal states that eligible MPH applicants submit documents and attend a personal interview for merit-list preparation, or may submit a PGCUET 2026 scorecard. IIPHG describes a multi-stage process for its full-time MPH admissions: online application with academic documents and a statement of purpose, an online MCQ screening test for shortlisted candidates, and subsequent evaluation stages. Its official site also reported MPH admission merit-list activity in 2026.

Deadlines and status can change during an admission cycle. For example, Manipal's MPH page displayed a July 25, 2026 application date and a tentative July 2026 course start when reviewed, but applicants should rely on the live admissions page and the current prospectus before paying an application fee or making travel plans.

  • Prepare official marksheets/degree or provisional certificate, identity and category documents where applicable, and any documents specified by the university.
  • Expect some providers to request a statement of purpose, screening test, interview, or proof of relevant work experience.
  • Verify whether a score from CUET-PG/PGCUET or another test is accepted for the exact campus and intake year.

Costs: use current, institution-specific fee documents

MPH costs vary widely by provider, campus, category, specialisation, accommodation choice, and academic year. Published tuition should not be treated as a national benchmark, and applicants should separately budget for application charges, refundable deposits, hostel or rent, food, travel, devices, insurance where applicable, and fieldwork-related expenses.

As a dated example, Manipal's 2026 MPH page lists total course fees of ₹4,06,000 and a one-time refundable caution deposit of ₹10,000. IIPHG's 2024 MPH brochure listed tuition of ₹2,75,000 per annum for Indian nationals, excluding accommodation, food, and other welfare activities; that brochure is useful historical context, not confirmation of the fee for a future intake.

Scholarship availability is also provider-specific. IIPHG publishes scholarship and fellowship information for public-health students, while Manipal lists merit and eligibility-linked scholarships. Applicants should confirm eligibility, number of awards, timelines, and whether an award offsets tuition only or total living costs.

  • Obtain the latest official fee circular and refund policy for the exact intake before accepting an offer.
  • Ask whether the quoted figure includes examination, registration, internship, hostel, and caution-deposit charges.
  • Treat all published fees as dated figures that may be revised by the institution.

Progression and career directions after MPH

The degree can support progression to research training and public-health roles, but it is not a professional licence and does not guarantee a particular designation or salary. IIPHG lists employment contexts for MPH graduates including government departments, NGOs, international organisations, foundations, academic institutions, hospitals, and research organisations. Manipal lists example career directions including epidemiology, public-health education, environmental science, biosecurity, and healthcare administration.

The immediate child roles in this node—Epidemiologist, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Policy Analyst, Public Health Nurse, Public Health Programme Manager, and Research Assistant—should be viewed as role targets rather than automatic outcomes. Employers commonly set their own requirements for subject expertise, analytics, software, field experience, clinical registration where relevant, language capability, and years of experience.

A Ph.D. in Public Health is a possible academic progression after an MPH. IIPHG's current doctoral page publishes 2026-27 PhD admissions materials, and its PhD admission notification states a master's-degree route with at least 55% marks as one eligibility pathway; entrance, interview, research proposal, and other rules must be checked in the current institution-specific notification. UGC-NET eligibility and subject mapping likewise must be verified against the current NTA information bulletin rather than inferred solely from holding an MPH.

  • Research and analytics: epidemiology, research assistant roles, surveillance, data analysis, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Programme implementation: public-health programme management, health promotion, community and NGO implementation, and health-system strengthening.
  • Policy and management: policy analysis, health financing or management, and government or development-sector roles.
  • Further study: Ph.D. in Public Health or a related field, subject to the university's current doctoral eligibility and selection rules.
