MPT (Master of Physiotherapy)

The consistent starting point is a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) or an institution-recognised equivalent. Beyond that, requirements are not uniform across India. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth’s 2026 admissions page requires Indian nationality, a recognised BPT with at least 50% marks, completion (or timely completion) of a six-month compulsory internship, and additional membership, fitness and character-document requirements. AIIPMR, a Directorate General of Health Services institution, lists BPT with six months’ compulsory internship for its MPT entry qualification.

Applicants should therefore check the current prospectus for the specific university and speciality—not only a generic “MPT eligibility” summary—before applying. In particular, confirm the accepted BPT awarding institution, minimum aggregate/grade, internship completion cut-off, domicile/category rules, registration or professional-body documentation, medical fitness requirements, and original-document verification process.

The usual published format is a full-time two-year postgraduate programme. Jamia Millia Islamia lists MPT as two years across four semesters, and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth’s syllabus describes two academic years and four semesters. However, the academic calendar, credit system, clinical posting hours, assessment pattern and dissertation timeline should be checked in the university’s own regulations.

Because MPT is clinically oriented, treat a course’s hospital/rehabilitation exposure, specialty facilities, supervisor availability and dissertation support as important programme-comparison factors alongside the nominal two-year duration.

There is no single course list that safely describes every Indian MPT. Published institutional curricula show a shared postgraduate emphasis on advanced therapeutic and diagnostic reasoning, clinical skill development, seminars/case-based learning, research methodology and biostatistics, alongside specialty-specific subjects. For example, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth’s MPT syllabus includes review of medical sciences and therapeutics, advanced therapeutics and diagnosis, research methodology and biostatistics, skills acquisition, and clinical issues/seminars.

Specialisation names and availability vary. Jamia Millia Islamia lists Sports, Orthopaedics, Cardiopulmonary and Neuroscience tracks, while MAHE Manipal lists a broader set including cardiopulmonary, community rehabilitation, geriatrics, musculoskeletal, neurosciences, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics/neonatal sciences and oncology. Review the actual syllabus, clinical rotation plan and dissertation requirements for the particular specialty before choosing a programme.

• Cross-cutting themes commonly evidenced in published syllabi: advanced assessment/therapy, clinical skills, research methods and biostatistics.
• Specialty tracks may include musculoskeletal/orthopaedic, sports, neurological/neurosciences and cardiopulmonary practice.

Do not assume there is one national MPT entrance route. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth states that its MPT specialty admissions are based on merit in its All India Post Graduate Physiotherapy Entrance Test (AIPGPET). MAHE Manipal’s 2026 page states that applicants must meet its BPT/internship criteria and qualify in the Manipal Entrance Test (MET). Other universities may use their own entrance examination, merit criteria, counselling or combinations of these methods.

For each application cycle, use the current official prospectus and admissions portal to verify the test, application window, documents, counselling steps, seat matrix, category rules and fee-payment deadline. Dates and processes change by university and session.

• Identify the institution’s applicable entrance test or merit process.
• Check eligibility before paying an application fee, especially internship completion dates.
• Retain BPT marksheets/degree, internship evidence, identity/category documents and any required registration or membership records specified in the prospectus.

MPT fees are set by individual institutions and can differ substantially by provider, location, speciality, accommodation and annual revision. A dated 2026 illustration: MAHE Manipal displays a total academic fee of ₹10,12,000 for its two-year MPT, a refundable ₹10,000 caution deposit, and separate hostel charges. This should not be treated as a typical national price.

Before accepting a seat, obtain the official current fee table and calculate the full cost: tuition and academic charges, examination/registration charges, refundable deposits, hostel and mess, clinical uniforms/equipment, transport, dissertation or research costs, and any late-payment rules. Also check the institution’s current scholarship and refund policies.

• Separate academic fees from accommodation and other living costs.
• Treat all fee figures as dated and subject to revision.

MPT can be used to build specialty-focused clinical, rehabilitation, research and academic pathways. MAHE Manipal identifies potential settings such as multispecialty hospitals, rehabilitation centres, polyclinics, research organisations, physiotherapy training institutions, private practice and administration; actual hiring standards remain employer- and state-specific. The NCAHP Act establishes the broader framework for standards, registers, scope of practice and professional conduct for recognised allied and healthcare professions, including physiotherapy professionals.

For research progression, an MPT is normally an eligible master’s-level route toward a Ph.D., subject to the admitting university’s discipline and entrance requirements. Under UGC’s Ph.D. Regulations, 2022, a completed one- or two-year master’s programme (in the specified pathways) with at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade is among the eligibility routes for Ph.D. admission; the regulations apply to universities and institutions covered by them. Candidates should still consult the target university’s current Ph.D. notification for its research area, entrance test/interview and supervisor availability.

For academic-exam planning, UGC-NET should be checked against the current NTA information bulletin and subject list. NTA’s published guidance advises candidates to take their postgraduate subject, or a related subject where the postgraduate subject is not in the NET subject list. NET eligibility is distinct from professional registration or clinical-practice requirements.
