The usual progression is MPT to Ph.D. in Physiotherapy. • Check category-relaxation, equivalence, employment/no-objection requirements for part-time registration, and supervisor/seat availability in the intended physiotherapy research area.
• Match the proposed topic to available research supervision—for example, programmes may organise physiotherapy research around musculoskeletal/sports, neurological, or paediatric areas.

Under the UGC Ph.D. Regulations, 2022, the doctorate has a minimum duration of 3 years, including coursework, and a maximum duration of 6 years from admission. An HEI may allow up to 2 additional years through re-registration under its own statute or ordinance, taking the usual absolute limit to 8 years.

Female scholars and persons with disabilities of more than 40% may receive up to a further 2 years’ relaxation, subject to a total limit of 10 years; the regulations also provide for up to 240 days of maternity/child-care leave during the programme. Delivery and registration mode are university-specific: Integral University, for example, publishes a 3-year minimum for full-time Physiotherapy Ph.D. registration and a 4-year minimum for part-time registration.

• Plan for a multi-year sequence of coursework, proposal development, ethics and data-collection approvals where relevant, research execution, thesis writing, and examination.
• Do not assume a part-time option, duration, or extension policy is identical across universities; verify the current research ordinance and department notice before applying.

This is a research-led degree rather than a fixed taught specialisation. The national minimum requires at least 12 Ph.D. coursework credits, specifically including research methodology and Research and Publication Ethics. Beyond coursework, the programme centres on supervised original research and a dissertation/thesis. • Scholars must also train in teaching, education, pedagogy or writing related to their chosen Ph.D. subject; they may be assigned 4–6 hours per week of teaching or research assistantship.
