IISER Aptitude Test (IAT)

IAT is an entrance examination rather than a degree or professional licence. It is designed for entry to participating undergraduate science, interdisciplinary science, and selected engineering programmes; a test score is followed by the relevant institution’s admission, rank, seat-allocation, document-verification, and programme-eligibility processes.

The IISER system comprises autonomous institutions established under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to promote interdisciplinary science education and research. For the 2026 cycle, admission to the IISER programmes described on the central portal was through IAT.

An IAT score may also be accepted by institutions that run their own admissions process. For example, IISc Bengaluru’s 2026 four-year BS (Research) admissions accepted IAT as one eligible national-examination route, while IIT Guwahati required a qualified IAT 2026 result for its four-year BS in Biomedical Science and Engineering. These are separate applications with separate eligibility rules, not automatic IISER seat allotments.

• Use IAT primarily if the intended path is foundational science, research-oriented undergraduate study, or one of the specifically advertised BS/B.Tech. options.
• Do not infer that every generic child degree in a career map is available through IAT: availability, subjects required, and admissions workflow depend on the particular institution and academic year.
• IAT is not the entrance route for MBBS admission; medical undergraduate admission is governed separately by the applicable NEET-UG framework.

For the 2026 IAT cycle, the central brochure allowed Indian nationals, OCI/PIO candidates, and foreign nationals. The educational route was Class XII/equivalent completed in 2024, 2025, or 2026, or appearing in 2026, from a recognized board; it also recognized specified three-year-or-longer diploma routes within the same time period. Foreign-national equivalence documentation could be required.

Applicants had to have studied at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics in the qualifying examination. This makes IAT accessible to many PCB, PCMB, and PCM-oriented students, but it does not mean every programme is available to every subject combination.

Always apply the programme-level rule after the IAT rule. For example, IISc’s 2026 BS (Research) pathway required Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main qualifying subjects, and IIT Guwahati’s 2026 BS in Biomedical Science and Engineering required all four: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. The institution’s own notice controls for that destination.

• Confirm qualifying-exam year, nationality category, board/diploma recognition, and the required subject combination.
• Read the current information brochure and the destination institute’s admission notice before paying an application fee or making preference choices.
• Reservation, category certificates, aggregate/performance criteria, and foreign-national documentation are cycle-specific and should be checked in the applicable official notice.

In 2026, IAT was conducted as a computer-based test of three hours. It contained 60 single-correct MCQs, divided evenly across Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics: 15 questions per subject. Consequently, candidates from PCB or PCMB backgrounds should not assume that they can ignore Mathematics, and candidates from PCM backgrounds should not assume that they can ignore Biology.

The official admissions portal publishes the cycle-specific syllabus, mock-test access, answer-key material, and previous-year question papers. Because syllabus wording and test arrangements can change from one admission year to the next, use the official material for the cycle being attempted rather than relying on coaching summaries or old patterns.

• Plan preparation across all four IAT subjects, not only the subjects required by a preferred degree.
• Practise in computer-based, timed conditions for the full three-hour duration.
• Use the official syllabus as the scope document and official previous papers/mock test as pattern evidence.

For the 2026 cycle, candidates applied only through the IISER admission portal. The official brochure recorded an application window from March 5, 2026 to April 13, 2026, and the test took place on June 7, 2026. Those dates are historical, not a forecast for the next cycle.

A practical sequence is: create an account on the official portal; complete personal, academic, category, and examination details; upload the requested documents; pay the published application fee through the official portal; correct details if a correction window is provided; download the hall ticket; take IAT; then follow result, rank, preference, and seat-allocation instructions. Admission remains conditional on document verification and meeting all programme requirements.

For an institution outside the central IISER allotment process, submit that institution’s separate application as well. IISc and IIT Guwahati both operated separate 2026 admissions workflows even where IAT was an accepted or required score.

• Never use a third-party payment page or unofficial application intermediary.
• Save the submitted application, payment confirmation, hall ticket, score/rank record, and all required certificates.
• Do not treat an IAT score alone as an offer of admission; monitor each relevant portal for counselling or institute-specific instructions.

Build preparation around the official, current-cycle syllabus for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, then use the official mock test and previous-year papers to calibrate difficulty, interface familiarity, pacing, and error patterns. The equal subject split means a balanced plan is usually more robust than studying only a preferred discipline.

A useful workflow is to first establish Class XI–XII-level conceptual coverage in all four subjects; next, practise mixed-subject MCQs under time limits; then review mistakes by concept, calculation, interpretation, and avoidable error. In the final stage, take full-length computer-based simulations and revise the official syllabus checklist.

Candidates should avoid relying on claims about a fixed cutoff, rank, fee, or admission chance from prior years. Seat matrices, programme offerings, reservation implementation, applicant performance, and the current cycle’s rules all affect outcomes.

• Download the official syllabus before selecting books or a coaching plan.
• Use official past papers to identify recurring gaps, but do not assume questions will repeat.
• Schedule Biology and Mathematics practice even if only one is central to the intended academic programme.

At IISERs in 2026, the principal outcomes included five-year BS-MS dual degrees, including the Computational and Data Sciences BS-MS at IISER Kolkata; selected four-year BS programmes in economic sciences/statistical sciences; and specified four-year B.Tech. programmes at IISER Bhopal. The exact campus, programme, major options, seat matrix, and fee structure are annual and must be verified in the applicable admission notice.

IAT can also support particular external-institute opportunities when that institute announces it. In 2026, IISc Bengaluru used IAT rank as one route into its four-year BS (Research), and IIT Guwahati used IAT 2026 qualification for its four-year BS in Biomedical Science and Engineering. Such pathways have their own subject requirements, application windows, and selection rules.

The long-term outcome is therefore determined by the programme actually joined—not by the test name. A BS-MS pathway is research-intensive undergraduate education; four-year BS/B.Tech./BS (Research) routes differ in curriculum and progression options. Students should compare programme curricula, majors, research exposure, fees, location, and progression rules directly on the destination institute’s website before choosing preferences.
