Eligibility for the IIT Madras B.S. (Medical Sciences & Engineering), 2026 intake
Applicants had to satisfy all three published conditions: qualify IAT 2026; be an Indian national or an OCI/PIO card holder whose card was issued before 4 March 2021; and meet the Class XII/equivalent requirements.

For the medical-sciences programme specifically, Class XII/equivalent must have been passed in 2024, 2025 or 2026 from a COBSE-recognised board, with Mathematics and at least two subjects among Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The minimum aggregate was 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates and 60% for other categories. IIT Madras allowed applicants awaiting Class XII results to apply provisionally, subject to subsequently meeting the criteria.

What students study
The programme deliberately combines medical science with engineering. IIT Madras identifies basic engineering, fundamental sciences, mathematical methods, machine learning, medical imaging and physiological systems as broad curricular strands, taught by medical and engineering faculty.
Its published curriculum includes anatomy, physiology, mechanics and fluid mechanics for physiological systems, electrical circuits/bioelectricity, medical biochemistry, microbiology/immunology/pathology, medical genetics, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, clinical-research statistics, pharmacology, surgery and surgical devices, AI in medicine, healthcare economics, medical image analysis, cardiovascular/respiratory mechanics, orthopaedic biomechanics, professional electives and a final project.
IIT Madras lists possible elective-led specialisation areas as organ-specific device development, AI applied to health, medical image analysis, quantitative pharmacology, drug design and deployment, translational medicine/regulatory processes, and fundamental physiological sciences. The detailed downloadable curriculum is labelled as effective from July 2023, so course titles and sequencing should be checked with IIT Madras for a future cohort.

Admission process and 2026 status
The regular IIT Madras route requires first taking IAT and then applying through the IIT Madras B.S. admissions portal. Offers are based on seat availability, the candidate’s IAT rank and category; a seat remains provisional until document verification and the institute’s joining formalities are completed.
For 2026, IIT Madras published a ₹1,000 non-refundable application processing fee for General/GEN-EWS/OBC-NCL candidates and ₹500 for SC/ST/PwD/third-gender/female candidates. A seat-acceptance fee applied only after an offer: ₹30,000 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL and ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD, including a ₹5,000 non-refundable processing charge. These are 2026-cycle figures and may change in later cycles.
As of 18 July 2026, the IIT Madras portal says new registration is closed. Applicants who received an allotment must follow the live, round-specific portal timeline rather than relying on an older brochure: deadlines and number of rounds can be revised during counselling.

Costs should be treated as dated context, not a four-year price guarantee: institute fees, hostel/mess charges, category concessions, scholarships and refundable deposits may be revised by the institute. Applicants should consult the current IIT Madras fee circular and their offer letter before paying.
Career and further-study options
IIT Madras says graduates are eligible to use the IIT Madras placement cell in the same way as B.Tech students. Given the programme’s published focus on devices, AI in health, medical imaging, pharmacology, translational/regulatory processes and physiological science, plausible role directions include biomedical/medical-device R&D, device quality or regulatory work, clinical-research support and research-assistant roles. These are career directions rather than guaranteed designations; employers determine the precise degree, skills and experience required.
For postgraduate study, GATE is one relevant route: GATE 2026 permits students in the third year or later of a four-year B.S./B.Sc. (Research) programme, and a valid GATE score can be used to seek admission to relevant master’s, direct-doctoral and doctoral programmes subject to each admitting institution’s criteria. Other listed pathways such as CAT or CSIR-UGC NET have their own, separately published eligibility rules and should be checked for the year of application.
A critical distinction is that this undergraduate degree is not an MBBS-equivalent qualification and does not authorise medical practice. Students interested in clinical medicine should not select it on the assumption that it leads to doctor licensure.
