Eligibility: IISc’s 2026–27 example

Eligibility is institution- and admission-cycle-specific. For IISc’s 2026–27 BS (Research) intake, applicants needed to have completed Class XII/equivalent in 2024 or 2025, or be appearing in 2026; they also needed Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects and first class/60% or equivalent in the qualifying examination. For SC/ST candidates, the qualifying-exam requirement was pass class.

Candidates also had to satisfy the eligibility rules of the applicable entrance examination. Prospective applicants should treat these as a dated IISc example, not as a universal rule for every four-year research-focused BS programme.

  • For Indian nationals and OCI(I) candidates, IISc used JEE (Advanced) 2026 or IAT 2026 merit for selection.
  • Foreign-national/OCI(F) routes at IISc included SAT/ACT with interview, or IAT/JEE (Advanced), subject to the published conditions.

Programme length and award

The IISc Bachelor of Science (Research) is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate programme. It culminates in a BS (Research) degree in a specialization rather than a general, undifferentiated science award.

The four-year format matters for later applications: some national examinations explicitly list a four-year B.Sc. (Research)/BS as an eligible qualification, but admission to a particular postgraduate programme remains subject to that programme’s own requirements.

  • IISc’s current programme information identifies five majors for entrants from 2026–27: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Mathematics and Physics.
  • The major is reflected on the degree certificate.

Curriculum: broad foundation, specialization and research

At IISc, the first three semesters are shared across the cohort and build foundations in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, engineering, earth and environmental science, and humanities. Students then specialize in a major during the later semesters.

The programme is deliberately interdisciplinary: IISc describes core science and engineering coursework, social-science exposure, laboratory work and modern instrumentation alongside a one-year research project. In the current major structures, students complete at least 131 credits; a minor is optional, subject to completing the required minor-pool credits.

Because course titles, credit rules, available majors and project arrangements are institution-specific and can change by academic year, applicants should use the current handbook and department curriculum—not a generic degree label—to compare programmes.

Admission route: IAT and JEE Advanced at IISc

For the 2026–27 IISc intake, Indian-national and OCI(I) applicants were selected on merit through either JEE (Advanced) 2026 or IAT 2026. Applicants had to submit an IISc application and update the relevant examination rank in the IISc admission portal; holding a rank alone was not the complete application process.

The 2026 cycle is already historical as of 19 July 2026: IISc’s application deadline was extended to 7 June 2026, and the institute subsequently published JEE (Advanced) round-one cut-offs and counselling instructions. Future applicants should rely on the next cycle’s official notice, because dates, ranks, intake and procedures can change.

  • 2026 approved IISc intake: 100 gender-neutral seats plus 20 supernumerary seats for female candidates for Indian national/OCI(I) applicants, and 5 seats for foreign national/OCI(F) applicants.
  • For IAT or JEE (Advanced) entry, IISc states that selection is based on the respective examination rank.

Fees: dated IISc 2026–27 context

For IISc’s 2026–27 BS (Research) fee page, annual tuition was listed as ₹80,000 for General/OBC/EWS students and fully waived for SC/ST/PwD students. The listed first-year total was ₹100,800 for General/OBC/EWS and ₹20,800 for SC/ST/PwD; those figures include ₹15,000 in refundable statutory and library deposits.

These are IISc’s published fees for the stated academic year, not a nationwide price for a BS (Research). They can be revised and do not by themselves establish the full cost of attendance, so applicants should also verify accommodation, food, insurance, travel and financial-support arrangements directly with the institution.

  • The listed recurring non-tuition annual charges include gymkhana fee, other academic fees and the students’ emergency fund.
  • IISc lists payment in three instalments: 35%, 35% and 30%.

Next options after a four-year BS (Research)

The degree is designed to support both research-oriented postgraduate study and industry-facing careers. IISc says its multidisciplinary training, laboratory exposure and two-semester research project can support advanced study or employment; the exact next step should be matched to the student’s major, coursework, marks, entrance-test score and the receiving programme’s rules.

Among the common examination pathways, GATE 2026 expressly lists B.Sc. (Research)/BS—four years after Class XII—as an eligible qualification, with candidates eligible from third year onward or after completion. CSIR states that its Joint CSIR–UGC NET awards JRFs to qualifying holders of a four-year BS programme, subject to its marks and examination conditions. JAM 2026 permitted completed undergraduate-degree holders and final-year undergraduates to appear, while admission remained dependent on each admitting institute’s minimum educational qualification.

A management route is also possible: CAT 2025 eligibility required a recognised bachelor’s degree with the applicable minimum marks, while final-year candidates could apply provisionally. These are examples from specified examination cycles, not guarantees of admission, funding or employment.

  • Research and postgraduate routes: CSIR–UGC NET/JRF, GATE and IIT JAM, where the relevant subject and receiving-institute requirements fit the student’s preparation.
  • Management route: CAT and then the separate admission process of each IIM or other accepting school.
  • Employment routes can include research-support and analytical roles, but job titles such as Research Assistant or Data Scientist have employer-specific skill and hiring requirements; research project work alone is not a universal credential for either role.
