DBT-JRF (BET) is not a college-admission examination. It is an all-India qualifying examination for a DBT doctoral research fellowship in biotechnology and life sciences. A candidate who earns Category-I status still needs to secure admission and PhD registration at a recognized university or institution; DBT/RCB do not place candidates into PhD programmes.

Under the BET 2026 rules, eligible academic routes included: a four-year/eight-semester UG degree in biotechnology, life sciences or listed allied disciplines; a B.Tech/B.E.; or a relevant master's/equivalent degree such as M.Sc., M.Tech., M.V.Sc., M.Pharm., integrated M.Sc./M.Tech. or MBBS. Relevant allied areas expressly included biomedical science, bioinformatics, biochemistry, biophysics, botany, chemistry, computational biology, genetics, microbiology and zoology, among other biology/life-sciences areas.
Final-year and result-awaited candidates could apply in the result-awaited category, but had to submit the prescribed attestation/undertaking certified by the head of their institution. Eligibility is verified for shortlisted candidates, so meeting the application condition does not remove the need to supply valid documents later.
- For a four-year research bachelor's degree, the 2026 notice specified at least 75% aggregate marks or equivalent grade, with a 5% relaxation/equivalent grade as applicable under the referenced UGC PhD regulations.

Both sections applied negative marking: one mark was deducted for each incorrect answer, while unattempted questions received zero.
Section A covered general science, mathematics, chemistry, general aptitude, analytical and quantitative ability, and general biotechnology. Section B covered specific biotechnology areas according to the official syllabus. The official 2026 bulletin continued to point candidates to the DBT-JRF BET syllabus document hosted by RCB.

Application process and 2026 cycle context
BET applications are submitted online through the NTA GAT-B/BET portal. In the 2026 process, candidates registered with their own email address and mobile number, completed the form, uploaded the required scanned records, paid online, and retained the confirmation page. The bulletin lists photo, signature, identity proof, date-of-birth proof, category certificate where applicable, PwD certificate where applicable, and the result-awaited certificate where applicable among the uploads.
For date context, the published BET 2026 application window ran from 19 March 2026 to 9 April 2026 (5:00 PM), with fee payment allowed until 11:50 PM on 9 April and a correction period from 11 to 13 April 2026. Those dates have passed; they are useful only as the 2026 record, not as a prediction of a future cycle's deadline.

Preparation strategy anchored to the official blueprint
Build preparation around the two-part design rather than treating BET as only a subject-recall test. Section A is compulsory and mixes 10+2-level general science, mathematics and chemistry with aptitude, analytical/quantitative ability and general biotechnology. Section B requires selective answering: candidates should develop sufficient breadth to identify their strongest 50 questions among the 150 specialised biotechnology questions offered.
Use timed computer-based practice and an error-review log. This is particularly important because every wrong answer carries a one-mark penalty against a three-mark correct answer; therefore, question selection and accuracy matter alongside coverage. Read the RCB-hosted syllabus named in the current bulletin before making a topic plan.

What qualifying can lead to
Category-I is the direct DBT-JRF outcome. It can be activated after the candidate joins and subsequently registers for a PhD at a recognized Indian university or institution, within two years of the award-letter date under the 2026 terms. Obtaining a BET Category-I result therefore does not by itself create a PhD seat: the candidate must independently meet the host institution's PhD admission and selection requirements.
Category-II is a distinct merit-list outcome. It can make a candidate eligible for appointment to a DBT-sponsored project with fellowship equivalent to NET/GATE qualification under current DST guidelines, and/or for PhD enrolment subject to institutional selection. However, the 2026 rules explicitly state that Category-II does not entitle the candidate to a DBT-JRF fellowship and does not oblige a principal investigator to hire from that list.
- Dated 2026 fellowship context: activated Category-I fellows were to receive ₹37,000 per month as JRF for two years, then ₹42,000 per month as SRF for the remaining three years after the required assessment; HRA where applicable and ₹30,000 annual contingency on a pro-rata basis were also stated.
