Purpose and place in the research-admissions pathway
JEST is not itself a degree programme, job examination, or automatic fellowship award. It is a common screening examination whose score is used by participating institutes alongside their own admission eligibility rules to shortlist applicants for science research programmes. The official 2026 site identifies Physics and Theoretical Computer Science as its two examination subjects, with admissions pathways also including Computational Biology through the Physics test.
ANRF recognition of JEST as a NET can matter for fellowship eligibility in relevant ANRF/SERB programmes, but candidates should distinguish that recognition from an admission offer or a guaranteed fellowship: the receiving institute and the relevant fellowship scheme apply their own conditions.

Eligibility: exam access versus admission eligibility
The official JEST eligibility page says there are no specific criteria merely to sit the examination. However, a useful score requires meeting the additional eligibility criteria set by the institute and programme to which the candidate applies. The official site characterizes its consolidated institute criteria as tentative and directs candidates to confirm the current rules on each institute’s website.
There is no age limit and no limit on the number of JEST attempts according to the official FAQ. Students from engineering backgrounds may appear, but that does not establish eligibility for a particular programme; programme-level requirements differ by institute.
For Theoretical Computer Science, IMSc states that candidates with a bachelor’s degree in CS or related disciplines, or a relevant MSc/ME/MTech/MCA, including final-year students, may appear for JEST. Its own PhD and Integrated PhD admissions have separate degree requirements.

Test format and level
JEST 2026 was delivered as a computer-based test at assigned examination-centre workstations; the official FAQ distinguishes this from an internet-based test. The examination is held at a level corresponding to MSc or advanced BSc study in Physics and Computer Science, and the official FAQ says questions draw on general graduation- and postgraduate-level syllabi.
The 2026 Physics paper was 180 minutes and 100 marks: Part A had 10 MCQs worth +1 each with −1/3 for an incorrect response; Part B had 20 MCQs worth +3 each with −1 for an incorrect response; and Part C had 10 numerical-answer questions worth +3 each without negative marking.
The 2026 Theoretical Computer Science paper was 180 minutes. Part A comprised 25 computer-entered MCQs carrying +3 for correct and −1 for incorrect answers. Part B had nine questions; candidates could attempt more than required, with evaluation based on the best three answers among the eight-mark questions and best two among the thirteen-mark questions. Part B closed after 105 minutes. Formats can change by cycle, so applicants should use the current official notice.

- Calculators, phones, books, charts, and other listed electronic or reference materials are not permitted in the examination hall.
Application process and 2026 timeline
The official application flow begins with registration and declaration/verification using a valid, unique email address and mobile number. After verification, the candidate completes personal details, educational details, exam-city selection, and online payment. The site says the application can be saved and resumed, but recommends completing it without interruption.
For the completed 2026 cycle, applications opened on 26 February 2026 and closed on 25 March 2026; admit cards became available on 7 April 2026, the exam was held on 12 April 2026, and results were declared on 30 April 2026. These dates and the 2026 fee are historical, variable information—not a schedule for a future cycle.
Admit cards are downloaded from the portal rather than sent by post or email. The official FAQ instructs candidates to bring a printout of the admit card and photo identification to the centre.

Preparation approach
Start with the official subject-specific materials rather than relying on unofficial past-paper compilations. The JEST site provides a Physics syllabus, a Physics sample paper, Theoretical Computer Science preparation material, and a TCS sample paper. The FAQ cautions that official full question papers are not made available, though some earlier questions are available through the official site.
For Physics, build preparation around the published syllabus and timed practice. The syllabus includes mathematical methods and major core-physics areas; candidates should match their study depth to the stated advanced-BSc/MSc level and practise numerical-response work as well as negatively marked MCQs.
For TCS, prepare for both the multiple-choice component and concise written/entered problem-solving under the time split used in the current pattern. IMSc describes JEST TCS as aimed at candidates interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science; its programme page is useful context, but the annual JEST notice governs the live exam pattern.

What a qualifying score can lead to
A JEST result can support institute-specific shortlisting for interviews or subsequent selection stages; it does not by itself confer admission. For example, TIFR’s 2026 JEST score-based admissions page states that interview shortlists were published for its Integrated PhD and PhD routes in Physics, while IMSc explains that it uses JEST as one means of screening students for interview in Theoretical Computer Science.
The destination programme depends on subject, academic background, institute eligibility, score, and selection process. The official JEST site lists participating institutions spanning research areas such as physics, astronomy/astrophysics, and related theoretical and computational fields, so applicants should select programmes based on disciplinary fit—not solely on the existence of JEST acceptance.
An Integrated PhD may be particularly relevant after a BS-MS or BSc (Research): the JEST FAQ explains that the TCS Integrated PhD route awards an MSc after completion of the first two years’ course requirements and a PhD after graduate-school completion. Degree structure and funding terms remain institute-specific.
- After results, check each intended institute’s separate admission page and shortlist/interview instructions.
- Keep score-validity rules in view: the official FAQ gives JEST 2026 validity through the declaration of JEST 2028 results.
- Do not infer a uniform stipend, fellowship, seat count, or cutoff from JEST alone; those are determined by the programme, institute, and cycle.
