BS-MS Dual Degree

The regular IISER BS-MS pathway is designed for students entering after school-level science education and seeking an integrated, research-oriented science degree. In the 2026 IAT rules, eligible applicants include Indian nationals, OCI/PIO applicants and foreign nationals, subject to the stated qualifying-examination and documentation conditions.

For the 2026 cycle, a candidate must have passed Class XII/equivalent or an eligible three-year diploma in 2024–2026, or be appearing in 2026. A candidate who first passed the qualifying examination in 2023 or earlier is not eligible for IAT 2026. For admission to the five-year science BS-MS, at least three subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics must have been studied in the qualifying examination. Applicants should use the current-year brochure because these rules can change by cycle.

• The programme is science-focused rather than a conventional single-discipline BSc from day one.
• The subject combination requirement is specific to the regular 5-Year BS-MS; specialised IISER programmes can impose additional requirements.
• Meeting eligibility permits an IAT application; admission still depends on the central counselling/allocation process and applicable seat availability.

The standard IISER BS-MS is a five-year integrated programme. It combines undergraduate and master's-level study in one continuous course and culminates in BS and MS degrees, rather than requiring a separate master's admission after a three-year bachelor's degree.

The central 2026 IISER portal identifies the regular five-year BS-MS as being offered across IISER Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati. Individual institutes may additionally offer distinct four-year BS, B.Tech. or specialised programmes, which should not be treated as interchangeable with the regular BS-MS.

• Nominal duration: 5 years / 10 semesters.
• Award: BS and MS degrees.
• Primary setting: the IISER system of science education and research.

The programme is built to provide breadth before deeper specialisation. IISER Pune describes its BS-MS curriculum as integrating biological, chemical, mathematical, physical and earth sciences. Its structure includes three semesters of study across core science areas, alongside selected earth-science, humanities, trans-disciplinary and foundational courses.

At IISER Pune, students then identify pre-major disciplines around the third and fourth semesters and may proceed to a major, subject to completing its prescribed courses. The final two semesters are dedicated to a Master's research project, which may be completed at IISER Pune or another research laboratory in India or abroad. This is an institute-specific example, not a guarantee of the identical curriculum at every IISER.

• Early phase: broad science coursework, lectures and laboratories.
• Middle phase: pre-major/major exploration or credit-based interdisciplinary study, depending on institute rules.
• Final phase: substantial supervised research and an MS project/thesis component.

For the 2026 cycle, applicants apply through the central IISER admissions process and take the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT); the central portal coordinates admissions for the IISERs. The IAT information brochure covers eligibility, application procedures, syllabus, test arrangements, counselling and institute/programme allocation.

The node's historical JEE Advanced parent should be read with care: IISER Pune records that JEE Advanced, KVPY and the earlier board channel were used in previous years, but states that from 2024 candidates have been admitted only through the board channel with IAT. Thus, JEE Advanced is not the current regular admission channel for the IISER BS-MS as of the 2026 cycle.

Applicants should rely on the current central portal rather than past cut-offs, dates or admission-channel advice. The 2026 portal was already publishing the provisional IAT answer key and response/objection information by June 2026, illustrating why cycle-specific deadlines must be checked directly.

• 1. Confirm that the qualifying-exam year and science-subject combination meet the current brochure rules.
• 2. Register for IAT and submit the required application and category/nationality documentation through the central portal.
• 3. Take IAT and participate in the central admission/counselling process if eligible by the published results and rules.
• 4. Review the programme/institute allocation, fee notice and joining instructions issued for the allotted IISER.

Fees are set by the admitting IISER and can change by batch, category, accommodation choice and policy. As a dated illustration only, IISER Pune's fee notice for the August 2025 BS-MS batch listed a first-semester total with hostel accommodation of ₹80,948 for General/OBC/KM/EWS students and ₹32,047 for SC/ST/PwBD students. The notice included one-time charges, a refundable caution deposit, insurance, semester charges and hostel fees; it is not a 2026 all-IISER fee quote.

Before accepting an offer, use the fee schedule issued by the allotted institute and distinguish refundable deposits, tuition/studentship charges, hostel/mess costs, insurance and one-time fees. IISER Pune maintains a BS-MS fee-structure page and PDF for its entering batch.

• Do not extrapolate one IISER's fee notice to another institute or academic year.
• Check whether accommodation is included and whether a listed deposit is refundable.
• Use the current allotment and institute fee notice for the payable amount and due date.

A common progression is a PhD in a science or interdisciplinary research area. IISER Pune's doctoral programme accepts applicants with a master's degree in science, engineering or mathematics, and notes that national examinations such as CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, JEST, NBHM or JGEEBILS may be expected depending on the research area. Its stated policy also provides a test-eligibility exemption for BS-MS/master's graduates from Institutes of National Importance with CGPA 8.0 or above on a 10-point scale; departmental advertisements remain controlling.

The degree's research training can also support applications to research assistant, project staff and private-sector R&D roles, subject to the employer's requirements. IISER Pune describes its BS-MS students as receiving laboratory training and research-project exposure, and invites industry employers to recruit through campus interviews. Eligibility for BARC OCES/DGFS, DBT-JRF (BET), GATE, ISRO ICRB, CSIR-UGC NET and JEST must always be verified in the relevant examination or employer notification, because requirements, disciplines and age/category rules vary by cycle.

• Doctoral study in India or abroad, usually through institute- and department-specific admissions.
• National eligibility/entrance examinations where the current notification accepts the candidate's discipline and qualification.
• Research assistant, project, laboratory and private R&D roles where a five-year science degree and research experience fit the job requirements.
