Quick facts
- Credential
- B.F.Sc. (Bachelor of Fisheries Science) is listed by ICAR as a four-year professional bachelor’s degree in agricultural and allied sciences.
- Normal structure
- The programme is ordinarily delivered across eight semesters (four academic years), with credit-based coursework and practical components.
- ICAR-UG eligibility baseline
- For CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026, B.F.Sc. applicants need Class 12 with at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Agriculture/Inter-Agriculture as core subjects; the bulletin specifies 50% aggregate for General/OBC-NCL/UPS/EWS and 40% for SC/ST/Third Gender/PwBD categories. Participating universities may impose additional programme-specific conditions.
- Main postgraduate pathway
- A B.F.Sc. in the 10+2+4 system is an accepted entry qualification for M.F.Sc. programmes; ICAR-CIFE lists specialisations including aquaculture, fisheries resource management, post-harvest technology, fish genetics and breeding, fish biotechnology, aquatic animal health management, fish nutrition and feed technology, fisheries economics and fisheries extension.
Eligibility for B.F.Sc.
For the ICAR all-India undergraduate route in the 2026–27 cycle, B.F.Sc. falls within the agriculture-and-allied-sciences group. The ICAR bulletin requires a recognised 10+2/equivalent qualification after 12 years of study and at least three relevant core subjects drawn from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Agriculture/Inter-Agriculture.
The stated ICAR-UG aggregate-mark threshold is 50% for General, OBC (NCL), UPS and EWS candidates and 40% for SC, ST, Third Gender and PwBD candidates, without rounding off. This is an examination/counselling baseline rather than a guarantee of admission: universities can prescribe additional subject combinations, age limits or other statutory conditions.
- Check the subject combination published for the particular university and B.F.Sc. seat before applying; requirements differ across participating institutions.
- The ICAR bulletin states that the medium of instruction at admitting universities is English.
Duration and academic format
B.F.Sc. is normally a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate professional programme. A university academic regulation describes continuous evaluation under the semester system, while an ICAR-aligned fisheries college states that students complete eight semesters for the degree.
Programme rules are institution-specific. For example, one current regulation specifies 180 credits including Student READY components, while the Kamdhenu University college specifies a minimum OGPA of 5.5/10 for its own degree award.
- Plan for a full-time four-year course rather than a three-year general bachelor’s programme.
- Confirm the awarding university’s credit, attendance, OGPA and maximum-completion rules in its current prospectus or regulations.
What students study and practise
The curriculum combines fisheries science with laboratory, field and industry-oriented learning. ICAR’s minimum requirements identify core academic areas/departments covering aquaculture; fisheries resource management; aquatic animal health and environment; aquatic environment management; fish processing technology; fish engineering; and fisheries extension, economics and statistics.
The practical emphasis is substantial. An ICAR-aligned B.F.Sc. college describes Fisheries Rural Work Experience in the seventh semester and experiential learning in fish seed production and post-harvest technology in the final semester. A university regulation also includes in-plant training, experiential learning, skill development, rural fisheries work experience, project work, seminars and study tours within Student READY.
- Typical academic coverage includes fish production and culture, aquatic environments, animal health, capture-fisheries/resource management, processing and engineering, and fisheries extension/economics.
- Exact course titles, credits, field placements and assessment rules should be taken from the current curriculum of the admitting university, not assumed to be identical nationwide.
Admission routes: ICAR-UG and university rules
For the 2026–27 ICAR undergraduate cycle, B.F.Sc. admission under the ICAR-AU system is based on merit rank in CUET (ICAR-UG) 2026, not on the separately named AIEEA-PG examination. The ICAR bulletin identifies B.F.Sc. as programme code 03 and says actual university-wise seats, subject eligibility and special conditions are to be published in the UG online counselling brochure.
Applications for CUET (ICAR-UG) are online through the NTA process. Candidates must select examination subjects that match subjects passed at Class 12; attempting different subjects can lead to disqualification from ICAR counselling/admission. Universities also verify documents and final eligibility at admission.
The label “ICAR AIEEA” is therefore best treated carefully for this node: AIEEA-PG is the ICAR postgraduate entrance process, whereas the current undergraduate ICAR route is CUET (ICAR-UG). Universities may also have state, institutional or other quota procedures, so their current admission notice remains controlling for those seats.
- Use the ICAR/NTA bulletin for the national ICAR quota route, then read the target university’s current seat matrix and special conditions.
- Do not rely on a prior year’s cutoff, seat count, age condition or application date; ICAR says these may differ when the counselling brochure is issued.
After B.F.Sc.: postgraduate study and progression
A direct academic progression is M.F.Sc. ICAR-CIFE accepts B.F.Sc. holders under the 10+2+4 system and offers M.F.Sc. disciplines spanning aquaculture, fisheries resource management, post-harvest technology, fish genetics and breeding, fish biotechnology, aquatic animal health management, nutrition and feed technology, physiology and biochemistry, economics, extension and aquatic environmental management.
For the 2026–27 national postgraduate cycle, ICAR announced AIEEA (PG)-2026 registration from May 8, 2026 through June 7, 2026 at 5:00 pm. This is dated cycle-specific context rather than a recurring deadline; candidates should use the current ICAR/NTA notice for future application windows, eligibility, seats and scholarships.
- Compare M.F.Sc. specialisations against intended work in aquaculture, hatchery/seed production, aquatic animal health, processing and quality systems, fisheries management, extension or research.
- For a research pathway after postgraduate study, ICAR also runs the AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) process; eligibility and fellowship details must be verified in the relevant year’s bulletin.
