- For coastal aquaculture farms, the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA) regulates registration and farm operation. The CAA’s 2026 Citizen Charter describes mandatory registration for farms in coastal areas under section 13(1) of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act, 2005.
What an Aquaculture Farm Manager does
The manager turns a crop plan into daily farm operations. In a pond-based shrimp operation, this includes scheduling pond preparation, biosecurity, water pumping, seed stocking, feeding, water exchange, and harvest. MPEDA’s Better Management Practices (BMPs) also emphasize coordination of harvest with processors and maintaining production records.
The job is both biological and operational. Managers monitor water and soil conditions, feeding response and growth, stock health, mortality, aeration and water circulation; they respond to disease or water-quality risks and keep traceable records of inputs and outputs. For shrimp farms, MPEDA’s BMP guidance specifies records such as stocking density, feeding, water-quality readings, aeration, health and growth monitoring, harvest, survival, feed-conversion ratio, costs and revenue.
On larger or more intensive farms, the remit can additionally include supervision of farm staff, purchasing and inventory control, equipment upkeep, and continuity of pumps, blowers, sensors and backup power. The exact emphasis depends on the species and production system.

- Monitor water quality, pond-bottom/soil condition, animal health, growth and feed use; take corrective action when indicators are outside the farm’s operating plan.

Entry route from B.F.Sc.
The canonical academic route is a B.F.Sc. followed by practical farm exposure and progressively responsible aquaculture operations work. A B.F.Sc. programme can provide relevant foundations in principles of aquaculture, freshwater aquaculture, coastal aquaculture and mariculture, fish nutrition and feed technology, and finfish hatchery management.
The transition to a manager title is normally experience-led: build hands-on capability in daily pond or system operations, water-quality testing, feeding, health and biosecurity, records, equipment and team supervision. An official Tamil Nadu fisheries-university regulation provides a concrete public-sector example in which B.F.Sc. is essential for a Farm Manager role; individual private employers may set different degree and experience requirements.
Training at ICAR programmes can complement the degree route, particularly for freshwater pond management, stocking and harvesting, and for newer production systems including biofloc and RAS.

- Seek supervised experience in a fish or shrimp farm, hatchery, nursery, farm service company or institutional farm.

Skills to develop
Technical judgement in water, soil and animal-health management is central. MPEDA identifies feed management, water-quality management, harvest practice and recordkeeping as core parts of successful shrimp production, while ICAR training programmes cover pond management, stocking and harvesting in freshwater aquaculture.
A manager also needs production-control skills: interpreting growth and feed data, maintaining accurate logs, planning inputs and harvests, and communicating clearly with technicians, labour teams, hatcheries, suppliers, processors and advisers. In intensive systems, basic operational competence with aeration, filtration, water circulation, pumps and backup systems is especially valuable.
For coastal aquaculture, compliance awareness matters alongside husbandry. CAA states that it regulates construction and operation of coastal farms and monitors adherence to environmental-impact guidelines and registration conditions.

Where the work is done
Aquaculture Farm Managers work principally on-site, rather than in a purely office-based role. Work may be based at freshwater ponds, brackish-water shrimp or finfish farms, hatchery-linked farms, or intensive systems such as biofloc, IPRS and RAS. The mix of fieldwork, laboratory-style water testing, equipment checks and production records varies by system.
Coastal farms operate within an additional regulatory setting. CAA registration materials require farm-location and layout information and, where applicable, environmental documentation; the Authority also regulates farm construction and operation. Export-oriented shrimp operations may additionally work to MPEDA BMPs and processor-linked harvest practices.
