What a radiographer does
Radiographers prepare and position patients, perform diagnostic imaging examinations, operate imaging equipment, maintain records, and help keep equipment ready for use. The Government of India’s National Career Service describes these as core radiology-technician tasks.
MoHFW’s MRIT curriculum expects diploma graduates to position patients safely, adapt techniques to illness, trauma or disability, obtain high-quality radiographic images, interpret requisition forms, assist with other radiological procedures, and care for and maintain equipment. These activities are performed within the clinical team and, where stipulated, under qualified supervision.
The role is distinct from that of a radiologist: a radiologist is a medical doctor who interprets imaging and makes medical decisions, whereas the radiographer is the imaging professional responsible for carrying out and supporting safe, technically appropriate examinations.
- Explain the examination and prepare the patient.
- Select and adapt positioning and imaging technique to the patient and clinical request.
- Produce diagnostic images and support procedures across modalities available at the workplace.
- Document the examination and maintain equipment and workflow records.
- Apply radiation-protection practices in X-ray/fluoroscopy settings and work with the radiologist, referring clinicians and wider care team.
Entry routes from a paramedical diploma
A Diploma in Paramedical Sciences can be a useful parent pathway only when it is specifically in radiography, medical radiology and imaging technology, or an employer-accepted equivalent. A generic paramedical diploma should not be assumed to meet radiographer eligibility; government employers publish their own essential qualifications.
The diploma route commonly combines senior-secondary science study with a focused radiography/medical-imaging diploma and clinical training. For example, ESIC’s published rule requires 12th Science, a two-year radiography/radiotherapy/medical-imaging diploma or certificate, and one year of relevant experience. Requirements can differ among employers and states.
A degree route is B.Sc./BMRIT in Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology or a similarly named programme. AIIMS lists its B.Sc. Medical Technology in Radiography with 10+2 English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics eligibility and a three-year duration in the cited admissions overview. The MoHFW curriculum treats baccalaureate MRIT as a higher entry point than the diploma pathway.
Diploma holders may also pursue a degree through institution-specific progression or lateral-entry arrangements. For example, Manipal lists lateral entry to B.Sc. Medical Imaging Technology for holders of a two-year post-10+2 Medical Imaging Technology diploma, subject to its stated marks and admissions requirements; this is an example, not a national entitlement.
- Complete 10+2 with the science subjects required by the target institution or employer.
- Choose a recognised, modality-relevant diploma in radiography/MRIT and complete supervised clinical training.
- Check the exact recruitment rule before applying, including any experience requirement.
- Consider B.Sc./BMRIT for broader progression and modality-specialist opportunities.
- Verify the institution, curriculum, internship, state requirements and AERB-related workplace requirements directly; AERB states that it does not itself approve radiography courses.
Skills to build
The role combines applied anatomy and patient care with precise technical work. MoHFW identifies safe patient positioning, adapting techniques to clinical conditions, image-quality production, equipment care, workflow prioritisation and communication as expected competencies for diploma-level MRIT graduates.
Radiation-safety knowledge is essential for X-ray and fluoroscopic practice. AERB says qualified X-ray technologists operating diagnostic X-ray equipment need adequate radiation-protection knowledge, and its guidance emphasises keeping diagnostic patient exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
- Anatomy, physiology, pathology basics and imaging projections.
- Patient identification, communication, consent-aware preparation and compassionate handling.
- Safe positioning and adaptation for trauma, disability, pain and emergency cases.
- Equipment operation, image-quality awareness, documentation and basic equipment care.
- Radiation protection, quality assurance, infection control and teamwork.
- Attention to detail, workload prioritisation and calm practice in a clinical environment.
Where the work happens
Radiographers work in hospital imaging departments, bedside/mobile imaging contexts, operating rooms, emergency settings and private imaging clinics or centres. The MoHFW curriculum expressly identifies these clinical settings as expected places of practice.
This is hands-on clinical work rather than desk-based work. National Career Service notes that radiology-technician work generally has no work-from-home option and that healthcare facilities may operate shifts; actual schedules, staffing and modality exposure vary by employer.

- Emergency, trauma and mobile/bedside imaging services.
- Operating theatres, including fluoroscopy/C-arm-supported workflows where appropriately assigned.
- Specialised CT, MRI, angiography or other modality units after relevant training and workplace authorisation.
Progression after entry
Progression can lead to modality-focused work such as CT or MRI technologist, senior radiographer, supervisory/department roles, education, or imaging-equipment applications support. The precise title and promotion route depend on the employer, qualifications, experience and vacancies.
Formal employers may have defined ladders. ISRO’s published recruitment and career-prospects page lists Radiographer-A at Level 4 for candidates with a first-class radiography diploma and states that the role can progress to Senior Radiographer-B at Level 10 through its merit-promotion scheme, subject to satisfactory performance. This is an employer-specific example, not a universal hierarchy.
Further education can support progression. MoHFW’s curriculum sets out diploma and baccalaureate MRIT entry levels, while Manipal describes graduate opportunities in hospitals, medical-imaging equipment companies as applications specialists, teaching and postgraduate study.

- Cross-train or specialise in CT, MRI, angiography, fluoroscopy or other imaging modalities offered by the employer.
- Move into radiology-department coordination or supervision with experience and employer-defined eligibility.
- Complete B.Sc./BMRIT or postgraduate MRIT study where it supports the target role.

Compensation context
There is no single India-wide radiographer salary. Pay varies materially by government pay rules, state, employer type, grade, qualification, experience, shift duties, allowances and role scope. Candidates should use the current notification for the particular post rather than general salary websites.
As dated public-sector reference points, ESIC’s published Radiographer rules list Pay Level 5, ₹29,200–₹92,300 in the pay matrix, while ISRO’s Radiographer-A recruitment norms list Level 4, ₹25,500–₹81,100. These are base pay-matrix ranges associated with those specific organisations and posts, not a prediction of take-home pay or private-sector earnings.
- Compare the post’s pay level or consolidated-pay terms, not only its title.
- Check whether the notification includes dearness, house-rent, shift, risk or other allowances.
- Confirm whether experience, a degree, specialised modality skills or promotion changes the grade.
- Treat all salary figures as notification-dated and employer-specific.
