In regulated diagnostic X-ray work, the role operates within a safety system rather than independently setting radiation policy. AERB requires an appropriately qualified radiologist, related medical practitioner or X-ray technologist with radiation-protection knowledge to operate X-ray equipment. It also requires facilities to use protective barriers and personal protective equipment, monitor radiation workers, and ensure equipment quality assurance through authorised agencies at least every two years and after safety-relevant repairs. Senior staff may therefore contribute to local compliance, quality checks and coaching, while the approved Radiological Safety Officer retains the delegated regulatory responsibility for the installation.

Odisha’s 2024 rules prescribe eight years as a Radiographer for promotion to Senior Radiographer Level-II. At GMCH Chandigarh, published recruitment rules describe a Senior Radiographic Technician/Senior Radiographer post as 100% promotion from Junior Radiographic Technician/X-ray Technician after six years of regular cadre service. Candidates should therefore read the current recruitment notice and the relevant State registration or renewal rules, rather than assuming one national threshold.

Senior practice also benefits from quality and leadership skills: recognising equipment or image-quality concerns, following escalation procedures, teaching safe workflow to junior staff, coordinating with radiologists and other clinical teams, and maintaining calm communication with patients who may be in pain, distressed or unable to cooperate fully.
