What a government radiographer does
A government radiographer supports diagnostic imaging services rather than independently providing a medical diagnosis. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology curriculum describes radiographers/technologists as producing diagnostic images using modalities that can include conventional and digital X-ray, mammography, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI, while acting as a key link between patients, radiologists and the wider care team.
A recent Directorate General of Health Services job-description document lists practical duties that may include routine and emergency radiography; bedside imaging in wards, ICUs and CCUs; image processing and technical-quality checks; correct patient identification; care of imaging equipment; documentation; radiation protection; quality assurance; and monitoring radiation exposure records. The exact modality mix and delegation of tasks depend on the hospital, equipment, local SOPs, and supervising clinician.
- Prepare, identify, position and communicate with patients appropriately for imaging examinations.
- Operate authorised imaging equipment and acquire technically adequate images according to departmental protocols.
- Apply radiation-protection and quality-assurance practices for patients, staff and the public.

Entry routes into government employment
The route is employer-specific. One important central route is RRB paramedical recruitment: CEN 04/2024 advertised the post as Radiographer X-Ray Technician and used a computer-based recruitment process followed by document verification and medical examination. The RRB’s CEN 04/2024 page continued to publish panels and verification/medical-examination updates during 2026, illustrating that a recruitment cycle can run well beyond its original application window.
For the 2024 RRB notice, candidates needed 10+2 with Physics and Chemistry and the specified two-year radiography/X-ray/radiodiagnosis diploma. Other public employers can set different rules: for example, an AIIMS advertisement for a radiographer post specified a three-year B.Sc. in Radiography. Applicants should therefore treat the qualification, age, experience, disability suitability, medical standard, domicile/reservation conditions and selection stages in the specific official vacancy notice as controlling.
AERB clarifies that it does not itself approve radiography training courses. It instead specifies personnel qualifications for diagnostic X-ray installations; candidates should verify that their course meets the wording of the particular employer’s notice and any applicable regulatory requirements.

- Track official recruitment portals of RRBs, central institutions, state health departments, medical colleges, public hospitals and defence/other public-sector employers.

Skills that matter
Core competence combines imaging technique, patient care and safety. MoHFW’s curriculum highlights accurate radiographic positioning and exposure technique, communication, patient assessment and monitoring, and continuing professional development. The DGHS description additionally emphasises image-quality evaluation, accurate patient identification, equipment handling, radiation protection and quality assurance.
Because ionising-radiation work carries safety obligations, radiographers need disciplined protocol-following, attention to exposure minimisation, use of protective measures, and prompt escalation of equipment or patient-safety concerns through the institution’s prescribed chain. AERB states that diagnostic X-ray operation requires adequate knowledge of radiation protection.

Where the work happens
Government radiographers work in radiology and imaging services in public hospitals, medical colleges, railway hospitals and other public-sector health facilities. A large central-government example is VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital’s radiodiagnosis department, which serves inpatients, outpatients, trauma and emergency patients and uses modalities including fixed and mobile X-ray, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, ultrasound and DSA.
Work may extend beyond a standard daytime clinic. Safdarjung Hospital states that its emergency radiological services—including radiography, emergency ultrasound and CT—operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shift, on-call and emergency duties therefore depend on the employing facility and its service model.

Career progression
Progression is governed by the cadre and recruitment rules of the employer rather than by a single national ladder. In the Indian Railways establishment manual, the radiographer category has historically included direct recruitment to Radiographer Grade III and a promotion channel for eligible X-Ray Attendants; the manual also refers to a next higher radiographer grade. Current designations, levels, eligibility and vacancy-based promotion arrangements must be checked in the applicable employer rules and notifications.
Career development can also involve deeper competence in modalities and workflows such as CT, MRI, mammography, fluoroscopy, mobile radiography, quality assurance, teaching support and radiation-safety responsibilities. The DGHS job description explicitly includes CT, mammography and MRI work, student training where a programme runs, and work connected with AERB/eLORA requirements; these are role- and facility-dependent, not automatic promotions.

Pay is highly employer- and notice-specific. As a dated central-government example, RRB CEN 04/2024 listed Radiographer X-Ray Technician at Pay Level 5 with ₹29,200 stated as pay. That figure should be read as the notice’s basic-pay reference, not as a current take-home-salary estimate.
In public employment, total monthly remuneration can differ from basic pay because applicable allowances, duty location, shift or other admissible payments, pension or other deductions, tax and the employer’s service conditions vary. Always rely on the pay level, pay matrix and terms printed in the vacancy notice and appointment offer for the relevant recruitment cycle.
- Use the official vacancy notice to identify the pay level and basic-pay figure.
- Do not compare roles using basic pay alone; allowance and deduction treatment differs by institution and posting.
