NIFT Entrance Exam

The NIFT Entrance Examination (NIFTEE) is the selection route for regular admission to NIFT’s undergraduate B.Des and B.F.Tech programmes. For the 2026 cycle, the NIFT admissions guidelines list B.Des specialisations in Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Interiors, Knitwear Design, Leather Design and Textile Design, plus B.F.Tech in Apparel Production.

The exam’s practical scope is narrower than the broader set of design and fashion qualifications sometimes associated with it. The official NIFT material supports NIFTEE as an admission route to the NIFT programmes listed above; it should not automatically be assumed to be an entrance examination for B.F.A., B.Sc., B.Voc or diploma programmes at other institutions.

• For B.Des, the selection process measures both general aptitude and creative/design ability, then assesses shortlisted candidates through a hands-on Situation Test.
• For B.F.Tech, selection is based on the General Ability Test (GAT), with the programme intended for the apparel-production technology pathway.

For B.Des in 2026, a candidate could qualify through recognised 10+2/senior-secondary study, the National Open School senior-secondary examination with at least five subjects, an AICTE or State Board-recognised three- or four-year diploma after Class 10, or specified equivalent international qualifications. A candidate appearing in the qualifying examination could apply provisionally, but had to meet the stated eligibility conditions by admission/seat allocation.

For B.F.Tech in 2026, the corresponding school-level routes required Mathematics. A recognised three- or four-year engineering diploma after Class 10 was also an accepted route. The 2026 guideline sets the bachelor-programme age ceiling at under 24 on 1 August 2026, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD categories.

• B.Des: Mathematics is not stated as a general compulsory subject in the 2026 eligibility list.
• B.F.Tech: Mathematics is required for the senior-secondary/equivalent routes.
• Always check the next cycle’s prospectus and admission guidelines: equivalence, documentation, category rules and age cut-offs are cycle-specific.

For B.Des, Stage 1 comprises GAT and CAT. GAT is a computer-based test and CAT is a pen-and-paper test; candidates shortlisted from Stage 1 take NIFT’s Situation Test. The 2026 information bulletin describes CAT as assessing intuitive ability, observation, concept development, design ability, and creative use of colour and illustration.

For B.F.Tech, admission is based on GAT without CAT, a Situation Test or interview in the regular UG process. In the 2026 structure, GAT for B.F.Tech had Section A and Section B, and merit weights were 30% and 70% respectively. The bulletin cautions that the number and difficulty of questions may vary by course and year.

• B.Des 2026: GAT 120 minutes; CAT 180 minutes; the stated structure was 100 GAT questions plus three CAT questions/tasks.
• B.F.Tech 2026: GAT Section A 120 minutes and 100 questions; Section B 60 minutes and 50 questions.
• The written papers were bilingual in Hindi and English; where versions differed, the English version governed.
• For objective questions in the 2026 GAT framework, the stated marking was +1 for a correct response and −0.25 for an incorrect response; unattempted questions received zero.

NIFTEE applications are submitted online through the NTA portal announced by NIFT/NTA. The 2026 process required candidates to register with their own email address and mobile number, complete programme and personal details, upload the prescribed images/documents, pay online, and retain the generated confirmation page and payment proof. NTA stated that applications submitted in another mode would not be accepted.

For the historical 2026 cycle, initial registration ran from 8 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, with a late-fee period through 10 January and an online correction window from 12 to 14 January. The written entrance exam was scheduled for 8 February 2026. NIFT explicitly described calendar dates marked with an asterisk as tentative and directed candidates to its website for final notices; a future applicant should use the current cycle’s official bulletin, not these dates.

After the exam, candidates should follow official notices for results, B.Des Stage 2/Situation Test, final merit and e-counselling or seat allocation. NIFT’s admissions page publishes the current cycle’s notices, including final-result and counselling updates.

• Use an email address and mobile number controlled by the applicant; official communication is sent there.
• Upload requirements for 2026 included a photograph, signature and, where applicable, PwD/UDID documentation; check the current bulletin for file formats and sizes.
• The 2026 form asked candidates to select four exam-city preferences. Centre allocation remained subject to availability and administration.
• Keep the confirmation page and fee-payment proof; do not send a hard copy to NTA unless a current official notice specifically requires it.

Prepare to the route you are actually applying for. A B.Des candidate needs both aptitude-test preparation and a timed creative-practice routine because CAT and the Situation Test materially affect final merit. A B.F.Tech candidate should concentrate on GAT, especially its quantitative, analytical, logical-reasoning, English-comprehension and general-knowledge dimensions.

For B.Des CAT, practise visual observation, translating a prompt into a coherent concept, drawing and illustration, and inventive use of colour under the allotted time. For the Situation Test, practise quickly constructing a clear three-dimensional model from limited supplied materials and writing a concise explanation of the concept. Official NIFT materials state that personal identification details or coaching-centre marks on CAT work can lead to disqualification.

Use NIFT’s official sample-question-paper resource alongside the current information bulletin and admission guidelines. Treat commercial mock-test patterns or coaching claims as supplementary only, because the bulletin says question counts and difficulty can vary from year to year.

• B.Des: time GAT and CAT practice separately, then review concept clarity, proportion, composition and written explanation.
• B.F.Tech: build speed and accuracy for GAT; use the official negative-marking rule applicable to the current cycle when planning attempt strategy.
• Read the current cycle’s syllabus, instructions, permitted materials and admit-card directions before test day rather than relying on past-year social-media advice.

For regular B.Des applicants, the final rank is based on the combined weighted scores from GAT, CAT and the Situation Test. For regular B.F.Tech applicants, the final merit is based on GAT. Candidates who obtain the relevant rank then participate in NIFT’s seat-allocation process; rank alone is not the same as a confirmed campus or programme seat.

For 2026, NIFT listed regular B.Des seats across its design specialisations and B.F.Tech seats in Apparel Production, while noting that it could increase or decrease the courses or seats offered. Therefore, programme availability, campus preferences, category eligibility, rank and the live seat-allocation rules all matter to the eventual outcome. NIFT’s admissions page should be treated as the authoritative tracker for notices, results and counselling.
