Agniveer (Indian Navy)

The work is trade- and posting-dependent rather than a single uniform job description. The Indian Navy’s recruitment calendar associates Agniveer SSR with seaman, communication, electrical, engineering, naval aviation, and logistics (material and finance/administration) work, while Agniveer MR is associated with logistics chef/steward and hygienist work. Accordingly, day-to-day duties can range from operational and technical support to communications, aviation support, material/logistics administration, food services, or hygiene services.

During the engagement, Agniveers undertake military and trade-related development. The Government describes the scheme as providing military skills and experience, discipline, physical fitness, leadership qualities and courage; the Navy’s published pathway begins with basic training at INS Chilka and then professional-school training. Exact duties, ship/shore assignment, and trade allocation should be confirmed against the recruitment notification and joining instructions for the relevant batch.

• SSR work areas: seaman, communication, electrical, engineering, naval aviation, logistics (material), and finance/administration.

The standard route is an online Indian Navy application when an Agniveer SSR or MR batch is notified. Recent notices use a staged selection process: the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET) or screening at Stage I, followed by Stage II physical fitness testing, written examination and recruitment medical examination. Final selection is merit-based among candidates who satisfy the prescribed requirements.

Education requirements differ by stream. The 2025 SSR notice accepted 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics and at least 50% aggregate, or specified engineering diploma/vocational alternatives with Physics and Mathematics. The 2025 MR notice required matriculation with at least 50% aggregate. Age windows, vacancies, marital-status conditions, physical standards, medical standards, examination format and application dates are batch-specific and must be checked in the live official notice rather than inferred from an older advertisement.

• Apply only through the official Join Indian Navy recruitment process when a relevant batch is open.
• Prepare for INET/screening, physical fitness testing, written assessment, document checks and military medical examination.
• Choose preparation based on the notified stream: SSR has senior-secondary/diploma/vocational academic routes; MR has a matriculation route.

Academic preparation should match the chosen stream. The 2025 SSR INET was a bilingual, objective test at 10+2 standard covering English, science, mathematics and general awareness. The 2025 MR Stage II written test covered science and mathematics plus general awareness at 10th-standard level. These published patterns are useful preparation context, but candidates should use the current batch syllabus and notice because the Navy can revise the process.

Physical readiness is essential. In the 2025 MR notice, Stage II required a 1.6 km run plus prescribed squats, push-ups and bent-knee sit-ups, followed by medical evaluation. The Government also identifies discipline, physical fitness, leadership and military skills as intended outcomes of Agniveer service. Swimming, sports and extracurricular proficiency are described by the Navy as desirable in the MR notice.

Agniveers serve in a military environment under the Navy Act during their four-year term. The setting can involve naval operational, technical, aviation, communications, logistics or support functions according to the assigned entry stream and service requirement. Training starts at INS Chilka and continues at professional schools, after which workplace and posting needs are determined by the Navy.

The engagement has service-specific conditions. A recent SSR notice states that Agniveers receive 30 days of leave per year plus sick leave on medical advice, are entitled during engagement to service-hospital medical facilities and CSD provisions, and are not eligible for ex-servicemen status. Candidates should read the terms in the current notification before applying because conditions may be updated.

The primary in-service progression possibility is application for permanent enrolment as a regular sailor after four years. This is competitive rather than automatic: the Armed Forces state that applications are assessed centrally on objective criteria including four-year performance and that up to 25% of each specific batch may be enrolled, subject to organisational requirements and policy. Those selected enter the regular cadre under its applicable service terms.

Agniveers can also build an education pathway while serving. IGNOU’s School of Vocational Education and Training lists Applied Skills bachelor’s programmes for Agniveer Defence Forces; IGNOU regional-centre information says these are exclusive to Agniveers and that 50% of programme credits are provided by the respective Armed Forces. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has additionally described transition schemes intended to help Indian Navy Agniveers move into certified merchant-navy rating, electrical, engineering and cook pathways, with prerequisites varying by route.

• Possible internal pathway: apply for regular-sailor enrolment after four years; selection is not assured.
• Higher education pathway: IGNOU Applied Skills bachelor’s programmes for Agniveers, subject to admission and programme rules.
• Civil maritime pathway: specified Indian Navy-to-merchant-navy transition schemes, with route-specific qualifications and certification requirements.

Compensation is governed by the notification and may change. In the Indian Navy’s 2025 SSR advertisement, the customised monthly package was listed as ₹30,000 in year 1, ₹33,000 in year 2, ₹36,500 in year 3 and ₹40,000 in year 4. The notice indicated that 70% was paid in hand and 30% went to the Agniveer Corpus Fund, with an equal Government contribution; risk and hardship, dress and travel allowances were stated to be payable as applicable.

The same 2025 notice showed total personal and Government corpus contributions of ₹5.02 lakh each over the engagement. At completion, the scheme provides a one-time Seva Nidhi package made up of the member’s corpus contribution and matching Government contribution; a 2022 Government release described the indicative exit package as approximately ₹11.71 lakh. That figure is historical, not a promise for a future batch, so applicants should rely on the financial table in their own notification. The notice also states that Agniveers are not covered by Naval Pension Regulations and are not entitled to gratuity for the engagement period.
