Quick facts

What it is
CSEET is the Company Secretary Executive Entrance Test, the entrance examination in ICSI’s Company Secretary course pathway before the CS Executive Programme.
Conducting body
It is conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), a professional body constituted under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 and functioning under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Current structure
The restructured, centre-based CSEET took effect from the June 2026 session; it is held three times yearly, in the first weeks of February, June and October.
Basic eligibility
Only Indian nationals who have passed or are appearing in the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination or an equivalent examination may register for CSEET.
Papers and marks
There are four 100-mark papers: Business Communication; Fundamentals of Accounting; Economic and Business Environment; and Business Laws and Management. The first three are subjective papers; Business Laws and Management is OMR-based.
Passing standard
To pass in one sitting, a candidate must score at least 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate; ICSI provides no paper exemption or carry-forward of marks in CSEET.
Fees and validity
Under ICSI’s restructured-CSEET FAQ published for the 2026 structure, registration is ₹7,500 (including SIP and free online classes) and each exam-session enrolment is ₹1,500. Registration remains valid for three years; a passing result is valid for one year. Fees and policies can change, so candidates should confirm them for their intended session.

Purpose and position in the CS pathway

CSEET is not a general finance entrance test; it is ICSI’s entry examination for the Company Secretary qualification route. ICSI presents the sequence as CSEET, CS Executive Programme, CS Professional Programme, pre-membership training and then CS membership. Its stated restructured assessment focus includes conceptual understanding, analytical ability, communication skills and professional aptitude intended to prepare entrants for the Executive and Professional stages.

  • Passing CSEET, together with meeting the Senior Secondary requirement, enables a student to register for the CS Executive Programme.
  • Graduates/postgraduates and certain specified ICSI, CA and CMA candidates may be exempt from CSEET and use the direct-entry route to CS Executive instead.

Who can take CSEET—and who may not need to

For the restructured CSEET, ICSI states that applicants must be Indian nationals and must have passed or be appearing in Senior Secondary (10+2) or an equivalent examination. This means Commerce in Classes 11–12 is a useful academic background but is not stated as an exclusive eligibility condition.

ICSI lists several categories that can register directly for CS Executive rather than taking CSEET: CS Foundation pass candidates; graduates and postgraduates; CA Intermediate-pass students; CMA Final-pass students; eligible final-year/final-semester three-year undergraduate students on a provisional basis; and eligible students in recognised five-year integrated programmes, including certain sixth-semester students on a provisional basis.

  • CSEET registration is valid for three years from the month of registration.
  • A CSEET result is valid for one year from its declaration date; a successful candidate should complete CS Executive registration within that period.
  • Students registered under the restructured system must complete the one-day Student Induction Programme (SIP) within one month of CSEET registration, and SIP completion is required before CSEET exam enrolment.

Exam format, subjects and assessment

From the June 2026 session onward, CSEET is conducted at designated examination centres rather than through the previous remote-proctored format. It is spread across four examination days: three subjective papers of three hours each—Business Communication, Fundamentals of Accounting, and Economic and Business Environment—and one two-hour OMR-based paper, Business Laws and Management.

Each paper carries 100 marks. Economic and Business Environment is divided into Economics (50 marks) and Business Environment (50 marks); Business Laws and Management is divided into Business Laws (60 marks) and Business Management (40 marks). ICSI’s FAQ says there is no negative marking for wrong answers in OMR-based papers.

  • Business Communication covers English usage, communication, business correspondence and business terminology.
  • Fundamentals of Accounting covers accounting principles and process, bank reconciliation, depreciation, final accounts, partnership/LLP accounts, company accounts and not-for-profit accounts.
  • Economic and Business Environment covers economics, the Indian economy and financial markets, entrepreneurship, regulators, global environment, sustainability, AI and corporate governance.
  • Business Laws and Management covers introductory law, company law, contracts, partnership/LLP, sale of goods, negotiable instruments and management principles/functions.

Registration and examination enrolment

The process has two practical stages: first register for CSEET through ICSI’s online student-registration system; then separately enrol for the selected examination session after completing SIP. ICSI says offline applications are not accepted for exam enrolment, and its registration portal provides the CSEET registration route.

For the standard restructured calendar, CSEET registration windows are November 1–February 28/29 for the June session, March 1–June 30 for the October session, and July 1–October 31 for the February session. ICSI’s published schedule sets separate examination-enrolment windows, including late-fee windows, so a candidate should verify the live notice for the specific session before paying.

  • As published for the 2026 restructured scheme, registration fee is ₹7,500, including SIP and online classes; examination fee is ₹1,500 per session.
  • Published fee concessions apply to specified categories, including SC/ST and persons with disabilities; further category and regional concessions are listed by ICSI.
  • For the standard schedule, exam enrolment with normal fee is March 16–April 15 for June, July 16–August 15 for October, and November 16–December 15 for February; late-fee windows follow. These dates are schedule-dependent and should be treated as variable.

How to prepare using ICSI materials

Start with the restructured syllabus applicable from June 2026, because the revised CSEET changed both the delivery mode and paper pattern. Build a subject-wise plan around the four papers, reserving written-answer practice for the three subjective papers and timed OMR practice for Business Laws and Management.

ICSI states that study material is made available at registration and on its website, and that free online classes are conducted for registered CSEET students for each session. ICSI also publishes sample question papers and question papers; these are particularly useful for learning the expected scope and for timed practice.

  • Use the official syllabus as the checklist rather than relying solely on coaching notes.
  • Practise accounting problems and written presentation for the subjective papers.
  • Practise reading and answering OMR questions within the two-hour limit for Business Laws and Management.
  • Complete SIP early: it is a prerequisite for exam enrolment, not merely an orientation activity.

What passing CSEET leads to

A CSEET pass is the normal entry point from the 10+2 route into ICSI’s CS Executive Programme. The candidate must use the result within one year to register for CS Executive. Passing CSEET does not itself confer Company Secretary membership or authorise professional practice; it is an entrance-stage milestone in the longer CS qualification pathway.

The broader Company Secretary pathway includes CS Executive and CS Professional examinations followed by prescribed pre-membership training and ICSI membership. ICSI describes Company Secretary roles in areas such as board advisory, compliance, corporate governance, risk management and secretarial/compliance audit; these are professional-pathway outcomes rather than guaranteed jobs or salary outcomes from passing CSEET alone.

  • Next immediate academic/professional step: register for the CS Executive Programme within the one-year result-validity period.
  • Longer route: pass CS Executive, pass CS Professional, complete applicable training requirements, then seek ICSI membership.
  • Students who later complete undergraduate programmes such as B.Com, BBA, BCA, BA LL.B. or B.Com LL.B. may also have degree-based direct-entry options for CS Executive, but CSEET eligibility itself remains available from the 10+2 stage.
