Quick facts
- Award and format
- B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) is a regular, integrated undergraduate law-and-commerce programme. CUSAT’s 2024 regulations describe it as a B.Com. and LL.B. (Honours) course undertaken after Plus Two, with regular attendance and practical training.
- Normal duration
- The standard structure is five years (10 semesters). This is explicitly specified in CUSAT’s B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) regulations; the precise academic calendar and term structure remain university-specific.
- Entry qualification
- Applicants normally enter after 10+2/equivalent. For CLAT 2026, the Consortium set a 45% minimum in 10+2 (40% for SC/ST/PwD); institutions can publish their own applicable admissions rules and category provisions.
- Entrance-route context
- CLAT is one important route, not a universal route: Nirma University’s 2026 B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) admissions use CLAT rank for its general category, while CUSAT’s regulations provide for selection through its own annual Common Admission Test.
- Curriculum profile
- The degree combines commerce, business and legal study. One official scheme includes compulsory commerce courses, compulsory law and clinical-law courses, English, and law electives; examples include accounting, financial management, company law, taxation, contracts, constitutional law, drafting, ethics, moots and internship.
- Fee context
- Fees are institution-specific and change by academic year. As a dated illustration, Nirma University lists ₹3,75,000 annual tuition for its 2026–27 five-year integrated law programmes, plus separately listed one-time and annual charges; this is not a national fee benchmark.
- CS progression
- Under ICSI’s April 2026 FAQ, a student who has passed, or is appearing in, semester 6 of a recognised five-year integrated programme may seek direct/provisional registration for the CS Executive Programme under the stated rules, rather than taking CSEET.
Eligibility: start after Class 12, but verify the institution’s rule
This is an integrated undergraduate programme entered after Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) or an equivalent qualification, rather than after a separate bachelor’s degree. For example, Nirma University’s 2026 admission page requires 10+2/equivalent with at least 45% aggregate marks; CUSAT’s 2024 regulations use stream-specific Plus Two thresholds. These examples show why applicants should treat marks, subject-stream rules, reservation treatment, age conditions and recognition of open/distance schooling as institution-specific.
For CLAT-participating admissions, CLAT 2026 required 45% in 10+2/equivalent, reduced to 40% for SC/ST/PwD candidates, and permitted candidates appearing in the qualifying examination to apply subject to producing proof at admission. The Consortium also stated that there was no upper age limit for CLAT 2026 UG candidates.
- CA Foundation and CSEET should not be assumed to be general admission prerequisites for this degree: published B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) eligibility is ordinarily based on 10+2 and the relevant university’s selection process.
- Where a programme is sought through CLAT, meeting CLAT eligibility alone does not replace the receiving university’s application, document-verification, category and counselling requirements.
Duration and mode of study
A B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) is ordinarily a five-year, 10-semester integrated course pursued after Plus Two. CUSAT’s regulations specify regular study, attendance at lectures and tutorials, and practical training; applicants should therefore confirm that any chosen programme is the regular, recognised programme appropriate to their intended professional pathway.
- Five academic years / 10 semesters is the standard programme frame in the cited official regulation.
- The university—not the degree title alone—sets term calendars, attendance, examination and promotion rules.
What students study
The defining feature is simultaneous legal and commercial education. CUSAT’s official 2024 scheme specifies 18 compulsory commerce courses, two English courses, 26 compulsory law courses including clinical courses, and 14 law electives. The exact credit count, sequencing and elective menu will differ across universities.
The law component in that scheme includes constitutional law, contracts, company law, civil and criminal procedure, evidence, taxation, property, labour law, family law, public international law and consumer protection. Its clinical component includes drafting, professional ethics, mediation/conciliation/arbitration, moot-court and court visits, and internship. Commerce and management study includes financial and corporate accounting, auditing, cost accounting, financial management, business statistics, managerial economics, banking and information technology for business and law.
- The “Hons.” label does not by itself guarantee a uniform national curriculum; inspect the current scheme, credit requirements and assessment regulations of each institution.
- For a commerce-law career focus, compare the availability of subjects such as company law, tax, securities/capital markets, intellectual property, insolvency and commercial dispute resolution.
Admission routes: CLAT and university-specific tests
There is no single nationwide admission mechanism for every B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) programme. CLAT 2026 was used for five-year integrated law admissions at participating universities, while individual institutions may require their own application in addition to CLAT. Nirma University, for example, required candidates in its general route to appear for CLAT 2026 and separately submit the institute application; merit was based on inter se All India CLAT rank.
Other universities can run their own entrance process. CUSAT’s regulations state that its rank list is prepared from the score in the university’s annual Common Admission Test. Accordingly, candidates should first identify institutions offering this exact B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) title, then check the current prospectus for its entrance test, application window, reservation categories, documents, counselling and fee schedule.
- CLAT is a route to participating institutions; it is not evidence that every B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) provider accepts CLAT.
- Do not rely on prior-year deadlines or cut-offs: both can change for the next admission cycle.
Costs: compare the full published bill, not tuition alone
There is no standard national fee for B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.). In a 2026–27 example from Nirma University, annual tuition is listed as ₹3,75,000 for the integrated law programmes, alongside annual examination-related charges and several one-time items; hostel, mess and laundry are separately listed and explicitly subject to change. CUSAT’s regulations likewise state that students pay fees prescribed by the university from time to time.
Before accepting an offer, obtain the current institution-specific fee notice and separate: tuition, admission and enrolment charges, examinations, refundable deposits, hostel/mess, books, travel for internships or moots, and any scholarship or fee-concession terms. A published amount for one university or category should not be projected to another.
- Treat all monetary figures as dated institutional context, not an all-India estimate.
- Ask whether charges are annual, per semester, one-time or refundable, and whether living costs are included.
Next options after, and during, the degree
For postgraduate legal study, an LL.M. is a direct academic option after completion of the law degree. For example, NLSIU’s 2026 LL.M. eligibility requires an LL.B. degree or equivalent and uses CLAT for its stated domestic admission route; marks thresholds and entrance requirements vary by institution.
For legal practice, graduates should follow the then-current rules of the relevant State Bar Council and the Bar Council of India. BCI’s current AIBE registration instructions expressly address graduates and final-semester students of three-year and five-year integrated LL.B. courses, and require specified documentary/undertaking steps depending on enrolment status.
The commerce-law combination also aligns naturally with corporate legal, compliance, tax and company-law work. For the CS pathway specifically, ICSI’s current rules provide a concrete bridge: students who have passed or are appearing in semester 6 of a recognised five-year integrated programme may register directly/provisionally for CS Executive under ICSI’s terms, without CSEET. Judicial-service, civil-service, management-admission and armed-forces routes have separate, periodically revised notifications and eligibility rules; consult the issuing authority for the cycle in which you apply.
- LL.M.: check the target university’s qualifying-law-degree, marks and entrance-test rules.
- AIBE/legal practice: graduation alone is not the complete process; state-bar enrolment and BCI requirements matter.
- CS Executive: the cited ICSI route becomes relevant from semester 6 of a recognised five-year integrated programme, subject to its current registration rules.
