Quick facts
- Administering body
- The CS Executive Programme is administered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), the professional body for the Company Secretaryship course.
- Current syllabus structure
- Under ICSI Syllabus 2022, CS Executive has seven papers arranged in two groups: four papers in Group 1 and three papers in Group 2.
- Main entry routes
- Eligible routes include passing CSEET after Class 12 (10+2), passing CS Foundation, or direct/provisional admission through specified higher-education and accountancy qualifications, including graduates/postgraduates, ICAI Intermediate pass, ICMAI Final pass, and qualifying integrated-programme students.
- Examination prerequisites
- For Syllabus 2022 students, ICSI requires successful completion of the Pre-Examination Test before enrolment and appearance in the Executive examination. Students registered in the Executive Programme from 1 February 2025 are also subject to the mandatory Three Days Orientation Programme (TDOP) before filing an examination form.
- Fees (variable; schedule effective 15 April 2026)
- The published Executive registration total is ₹18,900 for CSEET/CS Foundation entrants and ₹23,900 for specified direct-entry categories; the Executive examination fee is ₹1,500 per group. Optional journal subscription and applicable concessions can affect amounts, so applicants should confirm the live ICSI schedule before payment.
What CS Executive is for
CS Executive is the intermediate professional stage in ICSI’s Company Secretaryship pathway, positioned after entry through CSEET or another permitted admission route and before the CS Professional Programme. Its syllabus combines company law, securities regulation, business and labour law, corporate accounting and financial management, economic/commercial/IP law, and tax—areas central to corporate compliance and governance work.
Passing CS Executive is not itself ICSI membership or the Company Secretary qualification. It is the academic progression point for registration to the CS Professional Programme and can also support the separate ICSI Secretarial Executive Certificate route when the additional development-programme, practical-training and application conditions are met.
- Group 1: Jurisprudence, Interpretation & General Laws; Company Law & Practice; Setting Up of Business, Industrial & Labour Laws; Corporate Accounting & Financial Management.
- Group 2: Capital Market & Securities Laws; Economic, Commercial & Intellectual Property Laws; Tax Laws & Practice.
Who can register
As reflected in ICSI’s April 2026 student-services FAQ and March 2026 Council decision, an applicant may register after passing CSEET and the Senior Secondary (10+2) examination, after passing CS Foundation, or through listed direct-entry routes. The direct-entry categories include graduates and postgraduates, ICAI Intermediate pass candidates, ICMAI Final pass candidates, and students who have passed the sixth semester of a recognised five-year integrated programme.
ICSI also permits provisional registration for students appearing in the final year/final semester of a three-year undergraduate programme and for students appearing in the sixth semester of a recognised five-year integrated programme, subject to ICSI’s documentary and completion requirements. CSEET-qualified students should check the stated validity condition of their CSEET result when registering.
- CSEET route: passed 10+2 or equivalent and passed CSEET.
- CS Foundation route: passed ICSI CS Foundation.
- Direct-entry routes: graduate/postgraduate; ICAI Intermediate pass; ICMAI Final pass; or eligible five-year integrated-programme entrants.
- Provisional route: eligible final-year/final-semester undergraduate or sixth-semester integrated-programme students.
Programme and examination format
The active Executive curriculum is ICSI Syllabus 2022, introduced for Executive registration from 1 February 2023 and first examined in December 2023. It has two groups and seven papers. ICSI’s current academic portal publishes the applicable study material and session-specific supplements, including updated material for the 2026 examination cycle.
Before enrolling for an Executive examination, Syllabus 2022 students must pass the ICSI Pre-Examination Test. In addition, ICSI identifies TDOP as mandatory for students registered in the Executive Programme on or after 1 February 2025, with completion required before examination-form filing. Examination timetables, mode instructions, centres, form windows and session-specific requirements should be checked on ICSI’s examinations page because they can change by session.
- Group 1 has four papers; Group 2 has three papers.
- Pre-Examination Test: required for eligibility to enrol and appear under Syllabus 2022.
- TDOP: an examination-form prerequisite for the specified post-1-February-2025 Executive registrations.
- Use ICSI’s published timetable and exam notices for the current session rather than relying on prior cut-off dates.
How to register and enrol
Registration is completed online through ICSI; the Institute’s FAQ states that a downloaded registration form is not accepted. Applicants should select the appropriate route—CSEET/CS Foundation or direct admission—submit the requested qualification and identity documents in their ICSI account, and pay the applicable fee. ICSI says physical copies are not normally required unless it specifically requests them for verification.
Fee context is time-sensitive. The schedule effective 15 April 2026 lists ₹18,900 for CSEET/CS Foundation entrants and ₹23,900 for the listed direct-entry categories, comprising registration, education, pre-examination-test and TDOP fees; an optional journal subscription is additional. The same schedule lists the Executive examination fee as ₹1,500 per group. Concessions are separately published for eligible categories, so the final amount may differ.
- Create or access the ICSI student account and choose the relevant Executive registration route.
- Upload required documents and await/document completion as directed by ICSI.
- Complete TDOP and the Pre-Examination Test where applicable.
- Submit the separate examination enrolment/form and examination fee for the intended session.
Preparing effectively
Start with ICSI’s own Executive Syllabus 2022 study materials and use only the edition and session supplements that ICSI identifies as applicable to the target examination. The academic portal lists the seven Executive papers, while ICSI’s e-cart/study-material page identifies revised 2026 material for most Executive papers and the currently listed Tax Laws & Practice edition.
Build practice around the official question papers and current legal/tax updates. ICSI’s syllabus notes that candidates are expected to track relevant developments up to the prescribed cut-off dates for each examination session; therefore, preparation should include the official supplements and amendments rather than relying solely on older notes. Complete the mandatory Pre-Examination Test and TDOP early enough to avoid an administrative barrier to exam enrolment.
- Map a study plan separately to Group 1 and Group 2, then decide examination-group enrolment based on ICSI’s current session rules.
- Use ICSI study material, supplements and official past question papers for paper-specific practice.
- Maintain a session-specific amendments register for company, securities, tax, labour and commercial-law changes.
- Finish TDOP and the Pre-Examination Test before the examination-form window closes.
What follows after passing
Passing CS Executive makes a student eligible to register for ICSI’s CS Professional Programme, which is the next examination stage in the Company Secretaryship route. It can also be the point at which a student begins the ICSI long-term practical-training pathway after meeting the relevant training and development-programme requirements; ICSI’s long-term-training agreement specifies commencement after passing Executive and completing one month of EDP.
For a separate interim credential, an Executive pass holder who also completes the prescribed Executive Development Programme/equivalent and practical training may apply for ICSI’s Secretarial Executive Certificate. ICSI describes this as recognition for Executive-qualified, semi-qualified professionals; it does not confer ICSI membership or the rights of a member. Job titles such as compliance executive, corporate governance associate, or secretarial executive are possible employment directions rather than automatic outcomes of passing the examination.
- Next academic stage: CS Professional Programme registration.
- Training direction: long-term practical training after Executive pass and the stipulated development-programme requirement.
- Optional recognition route: Secretarial Executive Certificate, subject to additional conditions.
- Professional membership requires completing the full ICSI pathway and membership requirements; CS Executive alone is insufficient.
