Quick facts
- What CLAT is for
- CLAT is the Consortium of National Law Universities’ entrance test for admissions to participating universities’ five-year integrated LL.B. programmes and LL.M. programmes for the 2026–27 academic year.
- Conducting body
- The examination and central admissions counselling are administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities; final admission remains subject to verification by the allotted NLU.
- UG eligibility — CLAT 2026 cycle
- For the 2026 UG cycle, candidates needed 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with at least 45% marks; the threshold was 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. There was no upper age limit.
- PG eligibility — CLAT 2026 cycle
- For the 2026 PG cycle, candidates needed an LL.B. degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks; the threshold was 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. There was no upper age limit.
- UG paper pattern — CLAT 2026 cycle
- UG CLAT 2026 was a two-hour, 120-question multiple-choice test worth 120 marks, with a deduction of 0.25 mark for each wrong answer. Its five areas were English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques.
- 2026 cycle timing and mode
- CLAT 2026 was scheduled as an offline examination on December 7, 2025. This is historical cycle information, not a deadline for a future CLAT cycle.
Purpose and place in the law-admissions pathway
CLAT is principally an admissions examination, not a law qualification or a professional licence. In the CLAT 2026 cycle, the Consortium described it as the route for admissions to five-year integrated LL.B. and LL.M. programmes at participating universities for the 2026–27 academic year. Accordingly, students from Arts, Commerce, PCM and PCMB backgrounds may use the UG route after Class 12; the subject stream itself is not listed as an eligibility condition in the Consortium’s UG criteria.
Admission offers and seat allotments are provisional. The allotted National Law University verifies documents and applies its own course, intake, reservation and fee rules. Applicants should therefore treat CLAT rank as one part of the admissions process rather than a guarantee of enrolment.
- UG route: leads toward integrated law degrees such as B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) and other programme combinations offered by individual participating NLUs.
- PG route: leads toward LL.M. admission for applicants who already hold the required LL.B. qualification.
- Career note: CLAT itself does not award a degree or appoint a candidate to a legal job; later outcomes depend on completing the relevant programme and meeting the rules of the particular employer, regulator or recruitment process.
Eligibility
For CLAT 2026 UG, the Consortium required a passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 45% marks or equivalent grade, reduced to 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Candidates taking the qualifying examination in March or April 2026 could apply provisionally, but had to provide proof of passing at admission. The Consortium stated that there was no upper age limit.
For CLAT 2026 PG, the qualifying credential was an LL.B. degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks or equivalent grade, reduced to 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Final-year candidates could apply provisionally subject to producing passing evidence at admission; there was no upper age limit.
- Use the official eligibility page for the relevant cycle: qualifying marks, permitted provisional applications and category treatment can change.
- For CLAT 2026, Indian nationals and NRIs could appear; the Consortium instructed foreign nationals to approach individual NLUs directly rather than use CLAT.
- Reservation claims require the certificates prescribed by the relevant government and NLU, and university-level eligibility verification remains decisive.
Test format and what it assesses
The CLAT 2026 UG paper was an offline, two-hour paper with 120 objective questions carrying one mark each and negative marking of 0.25 for a wrong response. The Consortium framed the UG test as an assessment of comprehension and reasoning skills needed for legal education, rather than a test requiring prior legal study.
The five UG areas were English Language; Current Affairs including General Knowledge; Legal Reasoning; Logical Reasoning; and Quantitative Techniques. The official syllabus says Legal Reasoning does not require prior knowledge of law, although awareness of contemporary legal and moral issues may help; quantitative questions use skills including ratios, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation at approximately Class 10 level.
The CLAT 2026 PG paper was also 120 minutes, with 120 objective questions worth one mark each and a 0.25-mark deduction for wrong answers. It used extracts from primary legal materials and covered compulsory undergraduate-law subjects including Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Contract, Torts, Criminal Law and Public International Law.
- Check the official syllabus for the target cycle before relying on any prior-year pattern: the Consortium appointed an expert committee to consider UG and PG reforms for CLAT 2027.
- For future applications, confirm mode, duration, accessibility arrangements and question pattern from that cycle’s official information page.
Application, counselling and admission process
In the 2026 cycle, applicants registered online through the Consortium website using their own mobile number and email address, validated the mobile number by OTP, completed the form, uploaded the required files, and paid online. The official UG instructions listed a photograph, signature and applicable category, PwD and BPL certificates; uploads had to be PDFs. The 2026 online-registration period was August 1 through October 31, 2025, so those dates are past and should not be reused for a future cycle.
After the result, the Consortium’s central counselling process required selected candidates to register for counselling, provide NLU preferences and pay the applicable counselling-registration fee. In the 2026 process there were five rounds; candidates allotted a seat could generally use Freeze, Float or Exit options. The Consortium also stated that final seat allotment was provisional and subject to the concerned NLU’s validation.
- For a future cycle, start only from the official Consortium portal and read that cycle’s instructions and participating-NLU brochures before choosing preferences.
- Enter names and category information exactly as supported by official records. The 2026 instructions warned that false information or a material mismatch could cancel provisional admission.
- Fees, participating institutions, seats, reservation rules, test centres and deadlines are cycle- and university-specific. Verify them in the live official notice rather than relying on the 2026 figures.
Preparation approach
Build preparation around the official syllabus and passage-based testing method. For UG CLAT 2026, this means sustained reading comprehension, argument analysis and inference, current-affairs awareness, applying stated legal principles to facts, and accurate interpretation of numerical information. The official syllabus specifically recommends developing the ability to read and understand substantial text, following quality newspapers and periodicals, and practising quantitative speed with material such as Class 10 mathematics textbooks.
Use official practice material where available. For CLAT 2026, the Consortium said it planned guides, sample questions, model papers, subject exercises, a learning platform for successfully registered candidates, and online expert sessions. These materials are preferable for understanding the intended question style; commercial resources should be checked against the official syllabus rather than treated as authoritative.
- Begin with a diagnostic timed paper, then maintain an error log separating comprehension, reasoning, current-affairs and calculation errors.
- Practise full-length papers under the applicable official time limit and account for negative marking when deciding whether to attempt uncertain questions.
- For PG, revise the listed compulsory LL.B. subjects and practise reading judgments, statutes and other primary legal extracts closely.
What a CLAT result can lead to
A qualifying CLAT result can be used in the Consortium’s admissions process for participating NLUs’ integrated five-year LL.B. programmes or LL.M. programmes, depending on whether the applicant takes the UG or PG route and meets programme-specific conditions. The precise degree combinations, seats, fees and reservation arrangements vary by participating NLU and can change before final allotment.
A result does not itself secure admission. In the 2026 process, counselling registration did not guarantee a seat, and the Consortium specified that an allotment remained provisional until document and eligibility verification by the concerned NLU. After central counselling closes, member NLUs may separately fill remaining vacancies according to their own norms.
- For integrated-law applicants, compare each NLU’s programme title, curriculum, location, total cost and reservation policy directly from its official brochure or website before preference submission.
- For LL.M. applicants, confirm the NLU’s specialisation, eligibility and admission requirements in addition to the CLAT PG requirement.
- Do not infer eligibility for PSU legal-officer employment from a CLAT result alone: such roles are governed by the recruiting organisation’s separate notice and typically require the specified law qualification and other stated conditions.
