ACET

ACET is IAI’s entrance test for the ACET admission route to Student Membership. IAI presents it as a test of mathematical, statistical, analytical, communication and logical skills for candidates intending to proceed to its actuarial examinations. Passing ACET is therefore an entry step into the IAI student pathway, rather than an actuarial qualification by itself.

IAI is a statutory body established under the Actuaries Act, 2006. Its published ACET materials describe actuarial work as applying financial and statistical techniques to real business problems, particularly risk-management problems.

• For this node’s Commerce-stream context, ACET is not restricted to commerce students: IAI’s eligibility material explicitly includes finance and other streams, while emphasizing mathematics and numeracy.
• IAI also identifies a non-ACET admission route for candidates meeting specified alternative criteria; applicants should check the current IAI admission rules rather than assume ACET is the only route.

IAI’s June 2026 registration announcement allowed candidates who had appeared for 10+2 or an equivalent examination and were awaiting results, candidates who had passed 10+2 or higher courses/examinations, and candidates currently studying higher courses/examinations. IAI’s general ACET page also lists diploma, mathematical-sciences, engineering, management, Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accountancy and Company Secretary backgrounds as relevant examples.

The practical baseline is thus completion of, or appearance in, Class 12/equivalent. Candidates should still rely on the eligibility wording in the announcement for the sitting they plan to take, because session instructions can change.

• Class 12 students awaiting results may apply under the published eligibility.
• Mathematics aptitude is central to the test’s content, regardless of whether the student comes from commerce, science, engineering, or another background.
• A successful result must be used for IAI Student Membership within three years of the result declaration.

IAI states that ACET is a three-hour, 100-mark online test with 70 multiple-choice questions, each having one correct answer. The question count is split into 45 one-mark questions, 20 two-mark questions and five three-mark questions. The listed pass mark is 50%, and IAI states that there is no negative marking.

The marks allocation is Mathematics 30, Statistics 30, Data Interpretation 15, English 15 and Logical Reasoning 10. The official syllabus expands these areas to include algebra, calculus, vectors and matrices; probability, distributions, correlation and regression; chart/table interpretation; English usage and reading comprehension; and reasoning topics such as series, calendars, arrangements and syllogisms.

Delivery arrangements are session-dependent. The June 2026 announcement specified a home-based online exam and required a Windows 10-or-later laptop/desktop, current Chrome browser, webcam and microphone, at least an Intel i3 processor, 4 GB RAM, and continuous internet of at least 2 Mbps; it excluded tablets and mobile devices. Candidates should treat these as the requirements for that session and confirm the current session’s technical notice before registering.

• The exam is held in one slot on one day, according to IAI’s standing exam-structure page.
• In the June 2026 home-based format, IAI required candidates to use a personal laptop or desktop; no tablet or mobile device was eligible.
• IAI’s student guide states that candidates can navigate between sections and questions during the examination and may use an approved scientific calculator.

For the June 2026 sitting, IAI’s process was: create an ACET sign-up/login, open the registration form, enter personal information, add Class 10 and Class 12 education details, select the requested state and city fields, accept the declaration, and pay the examination fee online. The notice also required a recent passport-size colour photograph meeting its stated specification.

After successful registration and photo approval, the June 2026 process made a welcome kit containing one sample question paper and an indicative solution available in the ACET login. IAI said exam-related details would appear in the ACET login and be sent to the registered email address at least two days before the exam.

Deadlines, fee, location/delivery mode and technical rules are variable. The June 2026 dates and ₹500 fee are already historical as of this review, so applicants should wait for and follow the current official ACET registration announcement and portal.

• Use the applicant’s own email address and monitor it along with the ACET login for instructions.
• Use a desktop or laptop to register if the current session notice requests it.
• Keep the registration confirmation and check that the photo is approved before relying on access to the welcome kit or exam information.

Start from IAI’s published syllabus and organise study by the five scored areas. Because Mathematics and Statistics together account for 60 of 100 marks, they merit the largest share of preparation time; Data Interpretation, English and Logical Reasoning together account for the remaining 40 marks. This allocation is a study-planning inference from IAI’s official marking scheme.

Practise under a three-hour, 70-question format. IAI’s June 2026 notice provided registered candidates one sample question paper and an indicative solution, and IAI publishes a list of optional reference books while cautioning that those books are only guidance and may not cover the entire syllabus.

For home-based sessions, preparation should include a technical rehearsal on the permitted device and connection as well as academic revision. The applicable session notice—not a past notice—should be the final authority on software, device and proctoring requirements.

• Revise the specified mathematics topics: functions and notation, numerical methods, algebra, differentiation, integration, vectors and matrices.
• Build statistics fluency in probability, random variables, common distributions, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression.
• Practise interpreting tables, charts, graphs, Venn diagrams and caselets, and reserve time for English comprehension/grammar and logical-reasoning sets.
• Use official sample materials first; IAI’s listed books are supplementary rather than a substitute for the official syllabus.

A candidate who clears ACET can use the result to apply for IAI Student Membership, subject to completing the Institute’s admission process. IAI states that the result remains valid for this membership purpose for three years from the date the result is declared.

Student Membership is the immediate progression point from this node: IAI describes enrolled students as proceeding through its actuarial examinations. ACET itself should therefore be understood as an admission/aptitude gateway; further examination passes and the applicable membership requirements are needed to advance within the actuarial qualification pathway.

• Use the ACET result within its three-year validity window when applying for Student Membership.
• After joining as a student member, consult IAI’s current examination syllabus and education policy for the subsequent actuarial-exam pathway.
• Do not treat an ACET pass as a guarantee of employment, salary, or actuarial designation; it is an entrance step to IAI’s student examination route.
