BARC Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates

Eligibility is discipline-specific. For the 2026 cycle, engineering applicants needed an eligible B.E., B.Tech., B.Sc. (Engineering), or five-year integrated M.Tech. in one of the notified disciplines—mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, electrical, electronics, computer science, instrumentation, or civil engineering—with at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.0/10 CGPA (or equivalent). Science routes covered specified postgraduate qualifications in physics, chemistry, biosciences, geology, and geophysics, with subject prerequisites that differ by discipline.

All qualifying and pre-qualifying degrees must be regular, full-time, on-campus qualifications; correspondence, distance, research-mode, and part-time degrees are not eligible under the 2026 brochure. Applicants must be Indian citizens. For that intake, the minimum age was 18 as of August 1, 2026; maximum ages and relaxations varied by category, so applicants should use the next official brochure rather than rely on the 2026 limits.

GATE was an optional screening channel rather than the only route: eligible candidates could use the BARC online examination, a valid applicable GATE score, or both, subject to the rules for their chosen discipline.

OCES is structured as one year of full-time training. BARC describes the course work as three trimesters of classroom teaching, practical training, and project work, with continuous evaluation through examinations and assignments.

The 2026–27 brochure identified Mumbai and Hyderabad as the OCES training-school locations for that cycle. Location and discipline allocations are programme-specific, so a future intake may not replicate the same options.

The programme is intended to develop R&D knowledge and skills in nuclear science and technology. BARC’s general OCES description includes foundation, core, advanced, and elective courses, mini-projects, practical training, and project work.

Training is discipline-oriented. For example, the 2026 Mumbai options covered engineering design, development, operation, and maintenance of nuclear reactors, plus research in frontier basic and engineering sciences; the Hyderabad geology option focused on uranium and other atomic-mineral exploration techniques and related R&D. The precise scheme depends on the screening discipline and training-school allocation.

OCES selection is a two-stage process: screening followed by a selection interview. In the 2026 cycle, screening could be through BARC’s computer-based online examination and/or an applicable GATE score; final selection was based on the selection interview, subject to medical fitness.

Applications are online through the BARC OCES/DGFS portal, and an applicant may choose only one OCES screening discipline. The 2026 schedule listed a January 21, 2026 application deadline, online tests on March 14–15, 2026, interviews from May 12 to June 12, 2026, and final OCES selections in late June. Those dates are past as of July 19, 2026 and were explicitly tentative; prospective applicants should monitor the official portal for the next intake rather than infer a recurring deadline.

OCES is a paid training programme rather than a conventional fee-paying course. For OCES-2026, BARC specified a ₹74,000 monthly stipend and a one-time ₹30,000 book allowance. Boarding and lodging in a DAE hostel were mandatory during the OCES training period. The brochure does not present these as permanent terms, so applicants should verify financial provisions in the notice for their own intake.

For the 2026 recruitment cycle, the non-refundable application fee was ₹500 plus applicable bank charges for specified male General, OBC (non-creamy layer), Dependent-1984, and Kashmir-domicile applicants. Women, transgender applicants, SC/ST applicants, eligible dependents of defence personnel killed in action, and persons with benchmark disability as specified in the brochure were exempt. Fee rules can change by cycle.

Selected OCES-2026 candidates were required to sign an agreement and personal indemnity bond to serve DAE for at least three years after training. The bond amount consisted of stipend and the one-time book allowance actually paid; no third-party surety was required.

A trainee who meets the 2026 passing standard is appointed as a Scientific Officer “C.” Allocation to a DAE unit is based on DAE programme needs and the trainee’s OCES performance; DAE may also place candidates in AERB or its regional offices. The 2026 brochure listed potential DAE destinations including BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT, VECC, HWB, NFC, BRIT, NPCIL, BHAVINI, UCIL, AMD, and DCSEM, with postings potentially at facilities elsewhere in India.

For OCES-2026, engineering trainees who completed the training and met a minimum performance criterion could enrol for an HBNI M.Tech.; other trainees could enrol for an HBNI Post-Graduate Diploma if their academic performance exceeded the specified threshold. BARC also describes OCES course work as recognized for HBNI postgraduate diploma and as course work toward certain HBNI higher degrees.

The 2026 brochure stated that appointment as Scientific Officer “C” is at Level 10, ₹56,100 in the Seventh Central Pay Commission pay matrix, with two or three performance-linked increments for OCES trainees. This is a dated 2026 pay context, not a guarantee of future compensation.
