Class 10 (Secondary School)

Class 10 is a board-assessed secondary-school milestone, but its precise subject package depends on the board and school. In CBSE’s 2026–27 Class X scheme, the core structure includes languages, Mathematics or Mathematics Advanced, Science or Science Advanced, and Social Science, alongside electives and internal-assessment areas. CBSE also lists Class X skill subjects such as Information Technology, Security, Automotive and Artificial Intelligence.

ICSE uses a different grouping structure. Its Year 2026 syllabus groups English, a second language, and History/Civics/Geography in Group I; offers Mathematics, Science, Economics and Commercial Studies among Group II choices; and provides Group III options including Computer Applications, Commercial Applications, Art, Physical Education and vocational subjects. State-board subject and assessment rules should be checked directly with the relevant state board and school.

• Keep the Class 10 marksheet, passing certificate, school-leaving/transfer certificate, identity documents and category certificates (where applicable) ready for Class XI, ITI, diploma and recruitment applications.
• For CBSE learners, distinguish Mathematics from Mathematics Advanced and Science from Science Advanced when choosing and preparing for Class X, because the Board publishes them separately in the current curriculum.
• A skill or additional subject can be useful evidence of interest, but it does not replace a later course’s stated eligibility requirements.

The familiar labels Arts/Humanities, Commerce, Science PCM, Science PCB and PCMB are practical ways schools organise Class XI–XII subject combinations; they are not a single all-India CBSE subject scheme. CBSE’s current senior-secondary curriculum instead publishes a broad menu that includes Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and others. Before choosing a stream, confirm the exact Class XI combination that the intended school actually offers.

Start with future prerequisite flexibility rather than a stream label alone. In particular, many DGT technical ITI trades list Class 10 Science and Mathematics (or a related vocational subject) as entry requirements, while other trades have different thresholds. A student considering technical pathways should therefore preserve and strengthen Mathematics and Science where possible, then verify the specific trade or programme criteria before applying.

Admissions, cut-offs, fees, counselling dates and reservation rules are local and time-sensitive. For example, Assam’s 2026–27 state-polytechnic process used an online registration and counselling schedule, while its published rules require HSLC/equivalent with Mathematics and Science as compulsory subjects and specified minimum marks for that state system. This is an example of why applicants must use the current brochure of their own state admission authority rather than treating another state’s criteria as universal.

• Compare the actual Class XI timetable, laboratory access, teacher availability and subject combinations at each candidate school.
• If considering a diploma or technical ITI route, check whether Class 10 Mathematics and Science are mandatory for the specific branch or trade.
• Use official current-year notices for any recruitment route; education eligibility is only one part of selection.
• Do not assume that Class 10 board marks alone guarantee admission: schools, state diploma authorities and recruiters may apply additional eligibility, merit, entrance-test, physical or document-verification requirements.

Senior secondary (Classes XI–XII) is the main academic continuation route. Students may build an arts/humanities-, commerce- or science-oriented subject combination from the subjects their school and board offer. CBSE’s current senior-secondary list supports combinations involving humanities and social-science subjects, business and accountancy subjects, and Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, subject to school availability and the Board’s combination rules.

Polytechnic diploma admission is a direct post-Class-10 technical route administered through state-level systems. The details are not nationally uniform: for illustration, the Assam Directorate of Technical Education ran a separate 2026–27 state-polytechnic registration/counselling process and publishes its own eligibility rules. Applicants should use their home state’s current diploma admission brochure, not past dates or another state’s schedule.

ITI is a skills-first route under DGT’s CTS network. DGT lists 169 NSQF-compliant trades and identifies trade-specific duration and entry qualifications. Examples include one-year and two-year technical trades that require Class 10 with Science and Mathematics, alongside trades whose entry qualification is simply Class 10 or Class 8.

Class 10 can also meet the education threshold for selected uniformed-service and central-government recruitment notices, but it is not an automatic job route. The SSC GD 2026 notice required Class 10 and also prescribed computer-based examination, physical standards/efficiency tests, medical examination and document verification. Indian Navy Agniveer (MR) is an example of a service entry using Matriculation-based eligibility, but its official calendar warns that detailed conditions are subject to the notification for each entry and batch. SSC MTS notices similarly need to be checked cycle by cycle.

• Class XI–XII: Arts/Humanities, Commerce, PCM, PCB and PCMB-style pathways, where offered by the school.
• Polytechnic Diploma (Engineering): consult the current state technical-education authority’s brochure, eligibility rules and counselling schedule.
• ITI: select a CTS trade by its stated entry qualification, duration, NSQF level and local institute availability.
• SSC GD Constable or SSC MTS: apply only when a live SSC notice confirms the qualification, age, vacancy, deadline and selection process.
• Agniveer: check the current Army, Navy or Air Force notification for the particular category; Class 10 eligibility applies only to specified entries, not all Agniveer categories.
