Quick facts
- Indian occupational classification
- India’s National Classification of Occupations (NCO) 2015 lists “Digital Marketing/Social Media Manager” under code 2432.0201, within Public Relations Professionals. This is an occupational classification, not a uniform hiring or licensing rule.
- Core purpose
- A Social Media Manager plans and operates an organisation’s social presence to build brand awareness and engagement, using content, campaigns, community interaction and performance measurement.
- Typical entry evidence
- Indian vacancies commonly prefer a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, media or a related field, while some also accept equivalent practical experience; a demonstrable portfolio of content, campaigns and account-management work is therefore valuable.
What a Social Media Manager does
The role combines brand communication and digital-marketing execution. Typical work includes setting a platform-appropriate social strategy, turning campaign or business goals into a content calendar, and creating, curating, scheduling or publishing posts and other social assets.
The manager monitors comments, messages and mentions; maintains a consistent brand voice; follows relevant trends; and works with marketing, content, design, product or client-service colleagues. Performance work is central: the manager tracks campaign and platform metrics, reports insights, and changes content or campaign choices in response to results.
The exact remit varies substantially. Some roles include paid-social advertising, budgets, client servicing, creator or partnership work, and crisis-response processes, while others concentrate on organic content and community management.
- Plan social strategy, campaigns and content calendars against brand or business objectives.
- Create, curate, quality-check, schedule and publish platform-specific copy, images, video and other assets.
- Manage community interactions, including comments and direct messages, while protecting brand tone and reputation.
- Use platform and web analytics to measure reach, engagement, clicks or other agreed KPIs; report findings and optimise activity.
- Coordinate with creative, marketing and other cross-functional teams; in an agency, this may include managing work for multiple clients.
Entry routes in India
A practical route is to build a foundation in marketing, communications, journalism, media, business or a related discipline, then demonstrate applied work through internships, campus projects, freelance work or a portfolio. Current Indian job advertisements frequently describe a related bachelor’s degree as preferred rather than universally mandatory, and some expressly accept equivalent practical experience.
An alternative or complementary route is skills-first: create a small body of evidence showing content planning, copywriting, platform-native creative, community handling and analysis of results. Candidates can use official platform learning to strengthen specific gaps, but certificates do not replace employer-specific assessment of writing quality, judgement, results and portfolio work.
For paid and measurement-oriented work, Meta Blueprint covers advertising, community and reporting topics, while Google’s Analytics Academy offers structured Analytics training and certification. Applicants should check the individual vacancy because expected platforms, language skills, industry knowledge, location and experience level differ by employer.
- Build a portfolio with a content calendar, sample posts or short-form videos, campaign rationale, and a concise results report where data is available.
- Seek entry exposure through social-media internships, content-creator, community, digital-marketing or social-media-executive work.
- Learn platform tools and measurement fundamentals; use credentials as supporting evidence rather than as a substitute for work samples.
- Tailor applications to the brand’s audience, platforms, language needs and whether the position is organic social, paid social, client-facing agency work or a mixed role.
Skills to develop
The role needs a blend of creative, communication and analytical capability. Employers commonly ask for strong writing, content strategy, platform knowledge, audience engagement, organisation and collaboration, alongside the ability to interpret analytics and improve activity from the findings.
Platform fluency should mean more than knowing how to post: managers need to choose formats and messages suited to an audience, maintain brand consistency, identify relevant trends, and use measurement to test and refine work. For roles that include advertising, knowledge of campaign setup, creative and reporting becomes more important.
Professional judgement also matters. Social interactions are public and fast-moving, so managers need clear approval processes, an understanding of brand and platform rules, and the ability to escalate sensitive customer, reputational or compliance issues appropriately.
- Writing, editing, storytelling and concise platform-specific copy.
- Content strategy, editorial planning and creative briefing.
- Community management, audience communication and social listening.
- Platform analytics, KPI reporting and evidence-based optimisation.
- Campaign coordination, time management and cross-functional collaboration.
- Working knowledge of paid-social concepts, where required by the employer.
Work setting and scope
Social Media Managers may work in an in-house marketing or communications team, at a digital/advertising agency, or for a specialist service provider. The scope can range from one brand’s day-to-day channels to several client accounts; agency roles may add client communication, quality control, briefing and delivery coordination.
Work arrangement is employer-specific rather than inherent to the occupation. Recent Indian listings include on-site, full-time positions and roles advertised as remote for freshers or early-career candidates. Candidates should confirm location, working hours, client-facing expectations, publishing responsibilities and response expectations before accepting a role.
The title is not a consistent indicator of seniority. Advertisements using “Social Media Manager” can be aimed at freshers or early professionals, require about one year of experience, or seek several years of strategic and leadership experience. Applicants should assess the actual scope, not title alone.
- In-house teams generally align social activity closely with one organisation’s brand, products and campaigns.
- Agencies may require managing multiple client calendars, approvals, reporting cycles and stakeholders.
- Remote, hybrid and on-site arrangements all occur, but availability depends on the employer and role.
- Experience expectations range widely across vacancies labelled with the same job title.
