A Senior Operation Theatre Technician combines hands-on theatre work with coordination and oversight. In a Government of India hospital duty roster, the role includes all underlying OT Technician duties, administrative support to the Operation Theatre Supervisor, custody and upkeep of instruments and appliances for the main, recovery and emergency theatres, ensuring emergency outfits remain functional, supervision of subordinate staff, and monthly reporting of major and minor procedures.

The underlying OTT work includes keeping anaesthetic and surgical equipment functional, supporting sterile-supply and medical-gas systems, reporting equipment downtime, positioning and transferring patients safely, assisting with anaesthesia as assigned, maintaining theatre cleanliness and sterility, following universal precautions, and complying with biomedical-waste requirements. Exact task allocation remains subject to hospital policy, clinical supervision and the technician’s authorised scope of practice.

• Coordinate theatre readiness: instruments, equipment, consumables, emergency arrangements and safe operating conditions.

Academic routes are not uniform across India. For example, universities advertise B.Sc. programmes in Operation Theatre Technology or Anaesthesia and OT Technology for students completing 10+2 science, commonly with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics; programme duration, internship structure, entrance tests and marks thresholds are set by the individual university and may change by admission cycle.

For a senior government post, promotion rules may be decisive. At Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital, the 2026 rule specifies promotion from an OT Technician in Level 4 after five years of regular service, with no direct-recruit qualification prescribed for that post. Candidates should therefore check the recruitment rules, service rules and vacancy notice of the target employer rather than assume a single India-wide pathway.

At senior level, the role also calls for operational leadership: prioritising readiness across routine and emergency work, communicating clearly with surgeons, anaesthesia teams, nurses and technicians, supervising staff, maintaining records and handling administrative work. These capabilities matter because the senior technician’s duties sit between direct technical work and the OT Supervisor’s coordination role.

Senior technicians additionally supervise technical staff and assist with theatre administration under the hospital’s hierarchy.

The DGHS duty roster distinguishes these levels: the Senior OT Technician supports the Supervisor administratively and supervises subordinate staff, while the Supervisor has broader responsibility for deployment of technical staff, equipment continuity, inventories, sterile supply, medical gases and safety systems.

Promotion is not standardised nationally. The Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital rules notified in 2026 make the senior post promotional from OT Technician after five years of regular service in Level 4. Other employers may use different experience thresholds, qualifications, selection processes or post titles.
