Quick facts
- Role focus
- Investment analysts research investable companies, securities and markets; their analysis commonly supports valuations and recommendations for portfolio managers and/or clients.
- Common coverage areas
- The work may specialise in equities, credit/fixed income, multi-asset, quantitative investing, real estate, private equity or other investment strategies.
- Typical academic starting point
- Employers commonly seek a bachelor’s degree with relevant study in finance, business administration, economics, accounting, data science or a related field; the precise degree requirement varies by employer and role.
- CFA Program route
- The CFA Program has three sequential exam levels. Its curriculum covers investment tools, asset valuation, portfolio management and wealth planning, making it a relevant professional-development route rather than a substitute for an employer’s hiring requirements.
- India regulatory distinction
- “Investment Analyst” is a broad job title. Where work falls within the SEBI-regulated research-analyst activity of preparing or publishing research reports or research analysis, NISM identifies its Series XV Research Analyst Certification Examination as the requisite standard for the specified associated persons under the SEBI Research Analysts Regulations, 2014.
What an Investment Analyst does
The role turns financial, company, industry and market information into an investment view. In a conventional equity or credit research role, this includes collecting and interpreting data, building earnings or financial models, performing valuations, and communicating conclusions through reports or presentations to portfolio managers and/or clients.
Financial-statement analysis is central to many assignments: analysts assess a company’s performance and position in its economic context to inform a view on debt or equity securities and their value. Forecasting financial statements and using scenario analysis are also part of the analytical process described in the CFA curriculum.
In India, an analyst whose work involves regulated research reports must pay particular attention to legal and ethical obligations. NISM’s current Series XV test objectives include research-report quality, the SEBI research-analyst framework, conflicts of interest, disclosures and the prescribed code of conduct.
- Analyse businesses, sectors, macroeconomic developments and securities-market data.
- Build and maintain financial models, forecasts and valuation work.
- Assess investment risks, including credit, market and company-specific risks.
- Write research notes and explain evidence, assumptions and recommendations clearly.
- Apply ethical standards and, where applicable, regulatory and conflict-management requirements.
Entry routes in India
A relevant undergraduate degree is a common starting route. CFA Institute says organisations typically look for research analysts with bachelor’s-level study in finance, business administration, economics, accounting, data science or related areas. The node’s BFIA parent is therefore a directly relevant academic route, particularly when combined with internships, investment projects or demonstrable modelling and research work.
The CFA Program is a relevant parallel professional route. Candidates enter through Level I and progress through Levels II and III; eligibility for Level I requires a completed bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate timetable meeting the Institute’s stated graduation-window rule, or qualifying work-experience/higher-education combinations. Passing exams or being a candidate does not itself guarantee employment.
For roles conducted as SEBI-regulated research-analyst work, candidates and employers should verify the current regulatory position. NISM states that Series XV is the requisite standard for specified associated persons of SEBI-registered research analysts who prepare and/or publish research reports or research analysis. This compliance point should not be assumed to apply identically to every internal corporate or investment-analysis position using the title “Investment Analyst.”
- Complete a relevant bachelor’s programme, such as BFIA or another finance-, economics-, accounting-, business- or data-oriented degree.
- Develop evidence of practical capability through internships, student investment funds, research projects, company-analysis writing or modelling assignments.
- Pursue CFA Program study where it fits the candidate’s career plan and eligibility.
- Check whether the exact employer, activity and registration status make NISM/SEBI research-analyst requirements applicable.
Skills to build
Core technical skills include data analysis, industry and company analysis, financial analysis, financial modelling and valuation. CFA Institute also identifies mathematical and analytical capability, sector knowledge, awareness of the regulatory environment and persuasive communication as valuable in analyst roles.
A strong analyst needs to move from raw disclosures and market information to an explicit, testable conclusion. The CFA financial-analysis framework describes collecting input data, processing it, interpreting it, communicating conclusions and recommendations, and reviewing them as circumstances change.
For the Indian securities-market context, NISM’s Research Analyst examination objectives cover securities-market concepts, equity and debt instruments, mutual funds and ETFs, company analysis, research-report quality, legal and regulatory requirements, conflicts of interest and disclosure.
- Financial-statement analysis, accounting awareness, forecasting and valuation.
- Company, industry, macroeconomic and securities-market research.
- Spreadsheet-based modelling; quantitative analysis and careful data handling.
- Clear report writing, presentation and communication of assumptions and risks.
- Ethical judgment, attention to detail, regulatory awareness and conflict-of-interest management.
Where the role is found
Investment-analysis work exists across buy-side and sell-side settings. CFA Institute identifies research roles in asset-management and investment-industry functions and notes focus areas including equities, fixed income, hedge funds, quantitative investing, multi-asset investing, real estate and private equity.
Related analyst work can be found at investment banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, hedge funds, pension funds, securities firms, investment firms, private-equity groups, venture-capital firms and government agencies. Day-to-day work may therefore be closely linked to portfolio management, trading, client reporting, risk management or sector coverage, depending on the institution.
Within investment organisations, research may be treated as front-office or middle-office activity depending on whether it directly generates client revenue and how the firm is organised; titles alone do not reliably identify seniority or business function.
- Asset managers, mutual funds and other buy-side investment firms.
- Brokerages, securities firms and investment banks on the sell side.
- Banks, insurers, pension-related institutions and wealth/investment advisory businesses.
- Alternative-investment settings such as private equity, venture capital, real estate and hedge funds.
Career progression
Research analysis is commonly an entry point into investment careers, but the function also contains increasingly senior roles. CFA Institute describes a path that can extend from early equity or fixed-income analyst work to senior research responsibilities, including titles such as Managing Director or Investment Strategist.
Progression usually involves deeper coverage expertise, stronger independent investment judgment, greater ownership of research outputs and more direct interaction with portfolio managers or clients. Senior roles may expand into investment strategy, portfolio management, research leadership or broader investment decision-making responsibilities.
The exact sequence is employer-specific: an analyst may progress by asset class, sector, investment style or client segment rather than through a single uniform title ladder.
- Junior/associate analyst: supports data gathering, models, research notes and coverage maintenance.
- Analyst/senior analyst: owns a company, sector, credit or strategy coverage universe and communicates investment views.
- Advanced paths: portfolio-management support, investment strategy, research leadership, portfolio management or senior investment roles.
