Quick facts
- Core remit
- Equity research analysts collect and interpret company and industry information, build earnings models and valuations, and communicate investment views through reports and presentations to portfolio managers or clients.
- Indian regulatory context
- In India, a person acting or holding out as a research analyst generally requires SEBI registration unless an exemption applies. Individuals employed by a registered research entity do not separately require registration, but must meet the applicable qualification and certification requirements.
- Relevant Indian certification
- NISM-Series-XV: Research Analyst Certification Examination is specified for associated persons registered as research analysts, employed research analysts, and relevant partners preparing or publishing research reports or research analysis; NISM states that the revised examination has applied from January 20, 2026.
- Common employment models
- Investment-industry research roles are commonly described as buy-side or sell-side; sell-side equity analysts generally cover a smaller set of companies in greater depth than buy-side analysts.
What an Equity Research Analyst does
The role centres on developing an evidence-based view of listed companies and their securities. Typical work includes gathering company, industry and market data; analysing financial statements and business drivers; building earnings forecasts and valuation models; and turning the analysis into recommendations and reports or presentations for investment decision-makers or clients.
In an Indian regulated research context, producing recommendations also carries independence and disclosure responsibilities. SEBI’s framework addresses registration, certification, trading restrictions, compensation-related safeguards, disclosures, records and conduct requirements for research analysts and research entities.
- Research companies, industries and investable securities using primary and secondary information.
- Build earnings models, forecast financial performance, value equity securities and identify potential mispricing.
- Write and present research reports or investment views clearly, while managing conflicts and required disclosures where SEBI rules apply.
Entry routes from BFIA and the CFA Program
A finance-focused bachelor’s route, including the BFIA pathway identified for this node, can build a relevant academic base. CFA Institute notes that employers commonly seek bachelor’s-level coursework in finance, business administration, economics, accounting, data science or related areas. Internships, investment-research assignments and demonstrable modelling or report-writing work can help translate that foundation into an entry-level research role.
The CFA Program is a complementary professional route rather than a substitute for employer hiring requirements. Its three levels cover investment analysis, financial statement analysis, equity investments, ethics and portfolio-management concepts; its Analyst Skills material specifically addresses company and industry research, forecasting, identifying mispricing and making recommendations.
For India-based roles that involve the regulated research-analyst activity, candidates should distinguish between being employed by a registered research entity and operating independently. SEBI’s requirements apply differently: the entity registers when it employs analysts, while the relevant individuals must satisfy qualification and certification requirements. NISM-Series-XV is the specified certification under Regulation 7(2).
- Build academic grounding in accounting, corporate finance, economics, statistics, financial markets and valuation.
- Develop evidence of practical capability through financial models, company notes, sector work and internships.
- Pursue the CFA Program for structured investment-analysis development; complete NISM-Series-XV where the applicable SEBI certification requirement applies.
- Check the current SEBI regulations, circulars and employer compliance policies before issuing public research or recommendations.
Skills to build
The core technical toolkit combines data analysis, company and industry analysis, financial analysis, financial modelling and valuation. Strong analysis requires both quantitative work and judgement: an analyst needs to interpret financial reports in economic and industry context, form defensible expectations and explain the assumptions and risks behind a recommendation.
Communication is integral to the role. Analysts must convert complex work into readable reports, presentations and discussions with investment professionals, clients or company management. In the Indian regulatory setting, knowledge of ethics, conflicts of interest and disclosure obligations is also material to producing research responsibly.
- Financial-statement analysis, ratio analysis and cash-flow interpretation.
- Three-statement modelling, forecasting, scenario analysis and equity valuation.
- Industry, competitive-position and company-business-model research.
- Excel or comparable modelling tools, data handling and careful source validation.
- Clear writing, presentation, critical judgement and professional ethics.
Where the role is performed
Equity research is performed in both sell-side and buy-side investment settings. Sell-side analysts commonly publish coverage and detailed research on assigned companies, whereas buy-side analysts use research to support portfolio decisions. Research capability is also relevant across investment management, investment banking, private wealth, hedge funds, corporate finance, data science and quantitative investing.
The exact day-to-day mix depends on the employer and coverage universe, but generally combines desk-based data and model work with report production, internal investment discussions and interaction with issuers or company management. Public-facing recommendations in India must be handled within the applicable SEBI research-analyst framework.
- Sell-side securities firms and brokerage research teams.
- Buy-side asset managers, mutual funds, alternative-investment and wealth-management organisations.
- Related analytical settings such as investment banking, corporate finance and quantitative-investing teams.
Career progression
A common progression is from research analyst or associate work toward senior analyst and sector-specialist responsibility, followed by research leadership or broader investment roles. CFA Institute describes research analyst positions as common early investment-career roles and identifies more senior research positions such as Managing Director and Investment Strategist.
Progression is not automatic and titles vary by employer. Advancement usually reflects the quality and timeliness of analysis, depth of sector expertise, modelling and communication capability, adherence to compliance standards, and—in investment organisations—the usefulness of research to investment decisions.
- Entry: research analyst or research associate, often supporting data collection, models and company or sector notes.
- Mid-career: senior or sector analyst with deeper company coverage, independent forecasts and stronger internal or client communication.
- Senior pathways: research leadership, investment strategy, portfolio-related roles or senior positions such as Managing Director, depending on the employer.
