Quick facts
- Typical central-school designation
- For subject teaching at this level, the principal central-school recruitment designation is Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT), with advertised posts such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, regional languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
- CTET level
- CTET Paper II is the paper for persons intending to teach Classes VI to VIII; qualifying CTET is an eligibility condition, not by itself a right to appointment.
- Qualification context
- In the KVS–NVS Recruitment 2025 corrigendum, TGT candidates needed the notified subject/subject-combination qualifications plus a recognized teacher-education route, CTET Paper II and competence to teach through English and Hindi. Exact routes and marks differed by subject and notification.
- Age context
- The 2025 KVS–NVS TGT notification specified an upper age limit of 35 years for the listed regular TGT posts, subject to the notification's applicable relaxations and conditions. This is dated recruitment context, not a permanent rule for every future vacancy.
- Pay context
- The KVS–NVS Recruitment 2025 notification listed TGT posts at Pay Matrix Level 7, ₹44,900–₹1,42,400. This is the notified basic-pay range for that recruitment; take-home pay and future scales vary with rules, allowances, location and later revisions.
What the role involves
An upper-primary subject teacher plans and delivers regular classroom teaching for the assigned subject, checks students’ work, conducts or supports invigilation and evaluation, and contributes to curricular and co-curricular activities. KVS states these duties explicitly for its contractual teachers; they are a practical indication of the school-facing teaching, assessment and activity work associated with the role, while an individual regular-post job allocation can include further duties assigned by the principal.

- Teach and assess the notified subject at the middle/upper-primary level.
- Check written work and support examinations, including invigilation and evaluation.
- Help organise curricular and co-curricular activities and other school work assigned by the principal.
Entry route: subject degree, teacher education, CTET and recruitment
The practical route is to first match one’s academic record to a specific TGT subject—not simply to a generic teaching post. In the KVS–NVS Recruitment 2025 rules, subject-specific graduate study and prescribed combinations mattered; for example, the notice specifies sustained study of the relevant language for language TGT posts and sets separate requirements for Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
For the 2025 KVS–NVS cycle, common qualifying routes included a four-year integrated degree with the B.Ed. component, or a relevant bachelor’s/honours degree followed by an NCTE-recognized B.Ed.; specified integrated B.Ed.–M.Ed., special-education and postgraduate routes were also listed in some cases. CTET Paper II and English/Hindi teaching competence were required. Candidates should treat the live employer notice and corrigenda as controlling because eligibility, subject combinations, age limits, vacancies and selection procedure can change.
Appointment is competitive. In the joint KVS–NVS 2025 process, candidates were allotted by merit and their stated KVS/NVS preference, and the organizations subsequently allocated postings. A CTET certificate therefore supports eligibility but does not itself secure a government-school appointment.
- Choose the intended TGT subject and audit graduation transcripts against that subject’s notified combination requirements.
- Complete the applicable recognized teacher-education qualification, commonly a B.Ed.-based route for the advertised TGT subject.
- Qualify CTET Paper II for Classes VI–VIII and satisfy the employer’s language requirement.
- Apply to a live KVS, NVS or other central-school employer notification and complete its prescribed selection process.
Skills that are explicitly relevant
Subject command and pedagogical preparation are necessary but not sufficient. The 2025 KVS–NVS TGT criteria required competence to teach through English and Hindi, and listed computer applications plus working knowledge of English, Hindi and, where relevant, another regional language as desirable. These requirements fit KVS’s stated use of common textbooks and bilingual instruction.
Classroom assessment, written-work feedback, examination support and the ability to collaborate on activities are also core operational skills in a KVS setting.
- Deep command of the notified school subject and its required degree-level combination.
- Bilingual teaching capability in English and Hindi.
- Lesson delivery, assessment, copy-checking and examination administration.
- Computer application skills and collaborative participation in school activities.
Central-school workplace context
A major workplace route is Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. KVS describes its schools as co-educational composite schools affiliated with CBSE, using common textbooks and bilingual instruction; its mission includes serving children of transferable Central Government employees, including defence and paramilitary personnel. In the joint 2025 recruitment, successful candidates could be allocated to KVS or Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) according to merit and preference, with posting then determined by the respective organization.
The environment is therefore school-based and can involve posting anywhere within the employer’s system. Applicants should distinguish a KVS day-school context from NVS vacancies: the 2025 notice treated residential-school experience as desirable for NVS in several TGT categories.
- KVS: CBSE-affiliated, co-educational composite schools with bilingual instruction.
- Posting location is determined by the employing organization after selection rather than guaranteed by CTET qualification alone.
- NVS-oriented posts may value prior residential-school experience.
Professional development and progression context
Within KVS, senior and selection scales are not automatic merely because time has passed: KVS says they are granted after an appropriate Departmental Promotion Committee screens eligible teachers’ satisfactory performance. Its guidance also says a TGT seeking selection scale must hold the essential educational and professional qualifications for the corresponding PGT post, along with the other applicable conditions, and includes an in-service-training expectation.
More broadly, NEP 2020 envisages merit-based vertical mobility for teachers who demonstrate leadership and management capability, including academic-leadership roles. This is policy direction rather than an individual guarantee of promotion; actual progression remains governed by the employer’s service rules, vacancies, qualifications and assessment processes.
- Maintain required qualifications and documented satisfactory performance.
- Undertake the required in-service training for scale-related eligibility where KVS rules apply.
- Develop subject expertise, mentoring, leadership and school-management capability for potential higher academic roles.
Compensation and service-benefit context
For dated pay context, the KVS–NVS Recruitment 2025 notification placed the listed regular TGT posts in Pay Matrix Level 7, ₹44,900–₹1,42,400. This is a basic-pay matrix range, not a promise of a particular monthly in-hand amount: allowances, deductions, place of posting, appointment terms and future government pay revisions affect actual remuneration.
KVS’s public disclosure also lists service benefits for its employees such as LTC, gratuity, medical allowance, children education allowance and child-care leave under Government of India guidelines, and states that employees from 2004 are NPS subscribers under the Government of India NPS scheme. Eligibility and application of any benefit depend on the applicable appointment and service rules.
- 2025 regular-TGT basic-pay context: Pay Matrix Level 7, ₹44,900–₹1,42,400.
- Treat in-hand salary as variable rather than inferring it directly from the pay matrix.
- Check the applicable employer service rules for benefits, pension coverage and allowances at the time of appointment.
