Quick facts
- Cadre position
- Technician ‘B’ is a Category-A Defence Research Technical Cadre post at Pay Level 4, classified as Group ‘C’, Non-Gazetted and Non-Ministerial under the 2024 DRDO Technical Cadre Recruitment Rules.
- Promotion gateway
- The prescribed progression into Technician ‘B’ is from Technician ‘A’. A Technician ‘A’ needs five years of regular service for consideration, and up to 75% of eligible employees may be promoted in an annual assessment, on overall merit.
- Assessment timing and authority
- Eligible employees are assessed annually; ordinarily, the qualifying service is measured as of 1 July of the assessment year. Promotions through Technical Assistant ‘B’ in Category-A are assessed by a Local Assessment Board.
- External-entry context
- The rules provide direct recruitment and Departmental Competitive Examination routes only for the lowest Category-A grade, Technician ‘A’, rather than for Technician ‘B’. DRDO states that CEPTAM manages recruitment for DRTC technical posts.
- Pay-matrix context
- The 2024 rules list Technician ‘B’ at Level 4, ₹25,500–₹81,100 in the pay matrix. This is basic-pay range context from the rules, not a current take-home-pay guarantee; allowances and applicable government orders can vary.
Role and duties after promotion
The recruitment rules do not publish a separate, universal duty list for Technician ‘B’. Instead, they provide that a person promoted from one grade to another can be required to continue the duties performed before promotion, or to undertake other duties assigned by the appointing authority. In practice, the precise technical work therefore depends on the DRDO laboratory or establishment, trade/discipline, and assigned project or support function.

- A Technician ‘B’ is part of the Category-A Defence Research Technical Cadre, above Technician ‘A’ and below Technician ‘C’.
- The appointing authority may retain the employee on substantially the same work after promotion or assign different duties.
How this position is reached
Technician ‘B’ is principally an internal career-progression grade, not the normal external entry point. Under the 2024 rules, direct recruitment is confined to the lowest grades of Category-A and Category-B; for Category-A, that entry grade is Technician ‘A’. The rules also allow a Departmental Competitive Examination route to the lowest Category-A grade for qualifying departmental employees with at least three years of regular DRDO service, subject to the prescribed qualifications.

- Enter the Category-A technical stream as Technician ‘A’ through the applicable DRDO/CEPTAM recruitment process, or, where notified, through the Departmental Competitive Examination route to Technician ‘A’.
- For Technician ‘A’ external entry, the rules specify Class X/equivalent plus the relevant ITI certificate, qualifying institutional certificate, National Trade Certificate, or National Apprenticeship Certificate, as applicable.
- Serve as Technician ‘A’ for the required regular-service period and become eligible for the annual promotion assessment under the Limited Flexible Complementing Scheme.
Promotion rules and onward progression
Promotion from Technician ‘A’ to Technician ‘B’ is governed by DRDO’s merit-based Limited Flexible Complementing Scheme. The Eligibility Screening Committee identifies eligible personnel under approved norms, and the applicable Assessment Board considers promotion. Five years of regular service in Technician ‘A’ is the stated minimum for consideration; the rules cap promotions at 75% of eligible Technician ‘A’ employees in an annual assessment and require selection on overall merit.
The next listed Category-A grade is Technician ‘C’. A Technician ‘B’ requires five years of regular service to be considered for Technician ‘C’; the annual promotion percentage at that step is up to 65% of eligible employees. The subsequent listed path is Technical Assistant ‘B’, Technical Officer, and then Technical Officer ‘B’. These are eligibility and assessment rules, not assurances that an individual promotion will be granted.

- Annual assessments are ordinarily implemented from 1 July of the year to which the Assessment Board pertains, unless the Board specifies otherwise.
- Unauthorised absence and extraordinary leave on personal grounds do not count toward qualifying service; the rules include limited relaxation provisions in specified circumstances.
- For promotions up to Technical Assistant ‘B’ in Category-A, assessment is by a Local Assessment Board.
Pay context
As set out in the Ministry of Defence’s 2024 DRDO Technical Cadre Recruitment Rules, Technician ‘B’ carries Pay Level 4 in the central pay matrix, ₹25,500–₹81,100. This should be read as the rule-based basic-pay matrix for the grade, published in September 2024. Actual monthly gross and take-home pay may differ by pay-cell placement, dearness allowance, house-rent or government-accommodation status, transport and other admissible allowances, deductions, location, and later revisions to central-government compensation rules.
