Quick facts
- Core role
- A State Police Sub-Inspector (SI) is a field-level police officer whose work can include crime prevention, investigation and detection, maintenance of law and order, and—in some police stations—acting as Station House Officer (SHO).
- Appointment route
- Direct recruitment is conducted through the relevant State’s notified recruiting authority rather than through one all-India State-Police SI examination; for example, Rajasthan identifies its Public Service Commission as the recruiter for Police SI, while Madhya Pradesh lists a dedicated Subedar and Sub-Inspector recruitment test.
- Typical selection components
- The exact process is notification-specific, but recent official SI recruitment material shows written examination stages and physical tests. Bihar’s SI recruitment notices show preliminary and mains written examinations followed by PET/document-verification activity; Goa’s 2025 notice specifies physical standards and physical-efficiency tests.
- Entry eligibility is state-specific
- A recognized degree is a common requirement in official examples, but age limits, local-language or driving requirements, reservation rules, medical standards and physical benchmarks vary by State and by notification. Goa’s 2025 Police SI notice, for example, required a recognized degree or specified diploma, computer knowledge, a light-vehicle licence and Konkani knowledge.
- Initial training
- Appointees ordinarily complete prescribed basic police training after recruitment; Goa’s 2025 Police SI advertisement expressly states that recruited candidates must undergo and pass the basic course at a Police Training College or Police Training Academy.
- Pay context
- Pay is set by the relevant State/UT and recruitment rules, not by a single national SI salary scale. As a dated example only, Goa Staff Selection Commission’s 2025 Police SI advertisement listed Pay Level 6; candidates should rely on the pay level and allowances stated in the applicable vacancy notice.
Responsibilities and authority in station-level policing
The work is operational, investigative and supervisory. Haryana Police’s statutory disclosure describes police functions as prevention, investigation and detection of crime and maintenance of law and order. It lists FIR/NCR registration, case investigation, arrest, recovery of stolen property, filing/challaning cases and prosecution-related work among police functions.
A Sub-Inspector may be the officer in charge of a police station, subject to the State’s posting structure. Haryana Police states that a police-station in-charge may be an Inspector or Sub-Inspector, and identifies SIs as able to act as SHOs. The National Career Service occupational profile additionally describes SI work as controlling station staff, allocating duties, supervising patrols and responding to local intelligence and problems.
- Maintain public order and support crime prevention in the assigned jurisdiction.
- Investigate cognizable cases and manage case-related fieldwork, records and court/prosecution processes as required.
- Direct and deploy subordinate station staff; monitor patrol and duty arrangements.
- Where posted as SHO, carry station-level administrative, operational and statutory responsibilities.
How to enter through State SI recruitment
The standard external route is to apply against a State Police SI vacancy issued by the State police recruitment board, staff selection commission, public service commission, or another authority named in that State’s rules. The recruiting body is not uniform: Rajasthan Police identifies the Rajasthan Public Service Commission for SI recruitment, while the Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board lists a separate Subedar and Sub-Inspector Recruitment Test for Police Headquarters/Home (Police).
Read the individual notification as the controlling document. Official examples show that eligibility and tests can differ materially. Goa’s 2025 Police SI notice specified education, computer knowledge, physical standards, a physical-efficiency test, driving licence and language knowledge, followed by basic training. Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission notices for its SI recruitment show preliminary and mains written-exam milestones and later PET/document-verification activity.
- Track the official recruitment authority for the intended State; do not assume another State’s schedule, syllabus or eligibility applies.
- Confirm nationality/domicile, category/reservation, age, educational qualification, language, licence, medical and physical requirements in the live notification.
- Prepare for the notified written examination stages and for qualifying physical measurement/efficiency, document-verification, medical and other prescribed stages.
- Complete academy or police-training-college training after appointment when required.
Skills developed and used
The role calls for a combination of investigative judgement, legal and procedural discipline, physical readiness, communication and team supervision. This is an evidence-based inference from official task descriptions: police disclosures assign SIs investigation, arrest/recovery and SHO work, while the National Career Service profile includes staff control, duty allocation, patrol supervision, intelligence handling and engagement with local problems.
Candidates should develop both written-exam capability and practical professional habits: accurate report and case-record preparation, respectful public interaction, situational judgement, evidence-aware investigation, command of local procedures, and the stamina to meet the specific physical standards prescribed in the relevant notification.
- Investigation and case-management discipline.
- Clear written communication and accurate official documentation.
- Public-facing communication, conflict management and local-area awareness.
- Supervision, task allocation and patrol/deployment management.
- Physical fitness appropriate to the notified PET and operational duties.
Workplace and posting context
An SI commonly works from a police station or police post while also performing field duties in the station jurisdiction. Haryana Police states that stations are manned by SIs, ASIs, head constables and constables, and that station-level work includes law-and-order duties and investigation. Its disclosure also recognises an SI as a possible SHO.
The job therefore mixes desk-based statutory work—such as registration, records, case progression and coordination—with unpredictable field deployments for investigation, patrol supervision, public-order situations and urgent complaints. The particular unit, shift pattern, armed/unarmed role, specialist assignment and transfer conditions depend on the State police organisation and posting order.
- Police stations and police posts.
- Crime scenes, patrol areas and other locations within the assigned jurisdiction.
- Court/prosecution and inter-agency coordination connected with cases.
- Potential deployment in specialised functions such as traffic, intelligence, security or investigations, where the State organisation assigns such work.
Career progression
Career progression is governed by the applicable State police service rules, seniority, vacancies, performance and departmental selection processes. The National Career Service’s occupational profile presents a broad indicative progression from constable through head constable and ASI to SI, then Inspector and higher ranks. It should not be read as a guaranteed or identical promotion ladder in every State.
For an officer already appointed as SI, Inspector is the usual next rank shown in that national occupational profile. Candidates and serving personnel should check their own State’s police service rules and departmental orders for promotion quotas, qualifying service, examinations and specialised postings.
- Indicative upward movement from SI: Inspector and then higher supervisory ranks, subject to State rules.
- Specialisation or postings may include investigation, traffic, intelligence, security, enforcement or anti-corruption-related functions.
- Promotion conditions and timelines are variable; official State service rules are decisive.
Compensation context
There is no single all-India pay figure for a State Police SI. Compensation is determined by the appointing State/UT, the notified pay level, prevailing pay rules and eligible allowances. As a concrete but non-transferable example, Goa Staff Selection Commission’s Advertisement No. 1 of 2025 listed Police Sub-Inspector at Level 6.
Use the vacancy notification and the current State government pay/allowance orders to assess actual compensation. Pay level alone does not establish take-home pay: postings, admissible allowances, deductions and subsequent pay revisions can change the amount.
- Treat any salary figure from a coaching or job-listing site as non-authoritative unless it matches the official advertisement.
- Check the live notification for pay level or scale, probation terms and any stated allowances.
- Verify current State orders for allowances and implementation of pay revisions before making financial decisions.
