Engineer Officer in Indian Naval Armament Service

INAS officers in the Naval Armament Organization support the engineering lifecycle of naval armaments. The official ESE Rules specify Junior Time Scale responsibilities as production planning and direction of repair, modification and maintenance work involving mechanical, electronic and electrical devices and systems; arranging equipment for repair, maintenance and overhaul; and development work for import substitution and indigenous design specifications.

The role also includes supplying armament spares, conducting periodic calibration, testing and examination of assemblies and instruments associated with missiles, torpedoes, mines and guns, providing logistics support for armament stores to fleets and naval establishments, delivering technical advice, and managing a sizeable technical and non-technical workforce. This makes the role a technical-management and armament-support career rather than a seagoing combat-officer appointment.

The ESE notice places INAS Mechanical Engineering Posts in Category II, Electrical Engineering Posts in Category III, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Posts in Category IV. Allocation is competitive: UPSC uses the candidate's performance across the Preliminary examination, Main examination and Personality Test, together with the candidate's stated service preferences.

The 2025 ESE notification illustrates the baseline educational rule: an engineering degree from a recognised Indian institution is accepted, alongside certain specified professional/foreign qualifications. For INAS Electronics Engineering Posts, the notice also recognises an M.Sc. or equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject. Eligibility, age limits, vacancies, disciplines, disability suitability and application deadlines must be checked in the notification for the specific examination year, because they can change.

INAS officers work within the Naval Armament Organization and can be assigned to armament depots, naval establishments and headquarters-linked functions. The ESE Rules name Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, New Delhi, Kochi and Goa as likely major locations, but expressly provide for transfer anywhere in India or abroad; specialised foreign training or assignments may also arise.

Work is not limited to an office setting. The Rules place INAS officers under the Field Service Liability Rules, while the broader official description of the service highlights armament logistics and operational readiness. Candidates should therefore expect a defence-support environment in which technical work, depot/establishment duties, logistics coordination and periodic mobility are central.

The 2024 ESE Rules set out an INAS grade ladder from Junior Time Scale Assistant Manager/Assistant Director of Naval Armaments (Level 10) to Manager/Deputy Director (Level 11), Deputy General Manager/Joint Director (Level 12), General Manager/Additional General Manager/Principal Director/Director (Level 13), Chief General Manager/Deputy Director General (Level 14), and Director General of Naval Armament (Level 15).

Progression is not automatic. For example, the Rules state that Junior Time Scale officers with four years of regular service may be considered for Senior Time Scale through selection on the recommendation of a Departmental Promotion Committee, subject to passing the departmental examination after induction training. Subsequent grades have stated service thresholds, selection processes and vacancy availability; officers may eventually lead divisions or establishments.

The published 2024 ESE Rules classify the entry Junior Time Scale INAS post as Group A Gazetted and state a Level 10 basic-pay range of ₹56,100–₹177,500. The same document lists Level 11 through Level 15 ranges for higher INAS grades, culminating in the Director General of Naval Armament at Level 15, ₹182,200–₹224,100 basic pay.
