Quick facts
- Role scope
- “Data Entry Operator Grade B” is not a single uniform India-wide job specification: central-government cadres and individual employers use the title with different recruitment methods, qualification requirements and pay levels. Candidates should rely on the recruitment rules and advertisement for the specific department and post code.
- Central SSC EDP-cadre status
- Under the Electronic Data Processing Cadre (Group C post) Recruitment Rules, 2024 for the Staff Selection Commission, DEO Grade B is a General Central Service, Group C, non-gazetted and non-ministerial post at Pay Matrix Level 5 (basic-pay range ₹29,200–₹92,300).
- One documented internal route
- In the SSC Electronic Data Processing cadre, DEO Grade B is filled by promotion from DEO Grade A after five years of regular Level-4 service and four weeks of relevant training; if promotion cannot fill the post, the rules provide for deputation.
- Recent recruitment context
- SSC’s 2025 Selection Post Phase XIII notice included a DEO Grade B vacancy at the Central Leprosy Teaching and Research Institute, Directorate General of Health Services, with an age band of 18–30, graduation-and-above qualification category, and Pay Level 6—illustrating that department-specific advertised posts can differ from the SSC EDP-cadre rules.
What the work involves
The evidence supports a records-and-systems support role rather than a universally defined supervisory position. In a June 2024 LBSNAA vacancy for DEO Grade B, the stated responsibilities were entering information into computer databases for record keeping, collecting data for entry, organising files, maintaining records of computer equipment (including printers and UPS units), and completing other related duties assigned by the employer.
A candidate should therefore expect accuracy-sensitive data handling, file and record organisation, and basic stewardship of office IT assets. The supplied “higher-level” description may apply in some offices, but official material located for this guide does not establish supervision of junior operators as a universal Grade-B duty; the exact job description is employer- and cadre-specific.
- Enter, organise and maintain official data and digital records.
- Collect and prepare source material before entry, then keep files orderly and retrievable.
- Maintain administrative records relating to assigned computer peripherals and power-backup equipment.
- Read the vacancy circular or recruitment rules for the particular ministry, department, institute and post code before assuming specialised, validation or supervisory duties.
Entry routes and eligibility: identify the employing cadre first
There is no one universal entrance examination or qualification rule attached to the title. For the SSC Electronic Data Processing cadre governed by the 2024 rules, DEO Grade B is not a direct-recruit post: the prescribed method is promotion, failing which deputation. The promotion feeder is DEO Grade A at Level 4 with five years of regular service and successful completion of four weeks’ relevant training.
For deputation in that SSC cadre, the rules require Central Government officers holding an analogous post, or officers with five years of regular Level-4 service, plus 12th-standard Science with Mathematics and a computer speed test of at least 15,000 key depressions per hour. These are cadre-specific conditions—not a claim about every post carrying the Grade-B title.
Other employers may use different routes. For example, LBSNAA’s 2024 vacancy was through deputation and required a recognised university degree and at least 8,000 key depressions per hour. Separately, SSC’s 2025 Selection Post notice listed a Grade-B vacancy at the Central Leprosy Teaching and Research Institute as a graduation-and-above, 18–30, Level-6 position. Always apply the notice for the exact post, not a generic online eligibility summary.
- For serving SSC EDP-cadre DEO Grade A staff: monitor departmental promotion eligibility, service records and prescribed training.
- For deputation opportunities: verify parent-cadre status, analogous/feeder-grade service, qualification, typing-speed and tenure conditions in the vacancy circular.
- For direct/open-market vacancies where advertised: track the responsible recruiting body—often SSC Selection Posts or the relevant employer—and use its named post code, region and advertisement.
- Treat all age, educational, speed-test, vacancy and reservation conditions as advertisement-specific and time-bound.
Skills worth building
Fast, accurate computer data entry is an explicitly tested or required capability in multiple official Grade-B sources. The SSC EDP-cadre rules specify a computer speed test of at least 15,000 key depressions per hour for the deputation route, while LBSNAA’s 2024 deputation vacancy specified at least 8,000 key depressions per hour. The difference reinforces that candidates must prepare for the standard in the relevant notice.
Beyond speed, the documented duties make careful data handling, file organisation, records discipline and familiarity with routine office hardware practical priorities. A strong candidate should be able to preserve accuracy while working from source documents and follow departmental processes for official records and equipment.
- Keyboard fluency and accuracy under the applicable computer speed-test standard.
- Data-quality discipline: careful transcription, checking source material and maintaining orderly records.
- Digital file organisation and basic office database/spreadsheet workflows.
- Routine awareness of office computer, printer and UPS record-keeping requirements.
- Ability to follow employer-specific confidentiality, retention and administrative procedures.
Where Grade-B posts can sit
The title appears in varied public-sector settings. LBSNAA advertised a Grade-B post at its civil-services training academy in Mussoorie, while SSC’s 2025 Selection Post notice listed a Grade-B post at the Central Leprosy Teaching and Research Institute under the Directorate General of Health Services. This range means the day-to-day data domain can be training/administration, health or another department-specific function.
The SSC EDP-cadre rules classify their Grade-B role as General Central Service, Group C, non-gazetted and non-ministerial. That classification should not automatically be transferred to every state-government, autonomous-body, project or other central-department post using the same title.
- Potential settings include central training institutions, health-service institutes and other government offices.
- Work is generally office- and computer-based, but the information systems, records and operational context depend on the employer.
- Confirm the service classification, place of posting, transfer liability and reporting structure in the individual notice or recruitment rules.
Career progression
A documented progression route exists within the SSC Electronic Data Processing cadre: DEO Grade A at Level 4 can be considered for promotion to DEO Grade B after five years of regular service and successful completion of four weeks of relevant training. The Grade-B post is expressly described as non-selection in those rules, and promotion is the first prescribed filling method.
This is a concrete cadre route, not a universal hierarchy for every role labelled DEO Grade B. In other organisations, Grade B may be filled by deputation, direct/open recruitment, or an employer-specific promotion arrangement. Examine the applicable recruitment rules and vacancy notice to understand whether there is a higher post, departmental examination, training requirement or transfer route.
- Build a clean record of regular service, relevant training and assessed performance where departmental promotion applies.
- Maintain documentation needed for deputation: service particulars, vigilance/disciplinary clearance where requested, educational records and speed-test evidence if stipulated.
- Do not infer a guaranteed next designation solely from the “Grade B” label; career ladders are cadre-specific.
Compensation context
Pay must be read against the governing cadre and the dated advertisement. In the SSC Electronic Data Processing Cadre Recruitment Rules, 2024, DEO Grade B is Pay Matrix Level 5, with the stated basic-pay range of ₹29,200–₹92,300. LBSNAA’s June 2024 deputation circular likewise identified its Grade-B post as Level 5 and stated that dearness allowance, house-rent allowance and other allowances would be admissible under Central Government orders from time to time.
However, SSC’s 2025 Selection Post Phase XIII notice listed the Central Leprosy Teaching and Research Institute Grade-B vacancy at Level 6. Thus, ₹29,200–₹92,300 is useful 2024 Level-5 basic-pay context for the SSC EDP cadre; it is not a reliable universal salary figure for every Grade-B vacancy. Take-home pay depends on the notified level, city-based allowances, deductions, service conditions and rules in force at appointment.
- Use the pay level and basic-pay range printed in the specific recruitment rules or advertisement.
- Separate basic pay from allowances and net take-home pay.
- Treat compensation figures as dated context: the cited Level-5 range is from 2024 rules, while the cited Level-6 example is from an SSC 2025 vacancy notice.
