SSB is tasked in its area of responsibility with safeguarding assigned borders, promoting a sense of security among border communities, preventing trans-border crime, smuggling and other illegal activity, preventing unauthorised entry or exit, carrying out civic-action programmes, and undertaking other duties assigned by the Central Government. For the canonical route, apply to UPSC’s CAPF (AC) examination when the notification is open and include SSB in the force-preference order. In the 2026 notice, allocation was to be made using the final merit position and the preferences submitted with the application; selecting SSB is therefore not a separate SSB written examination under this route.

The 2026 selection sequence was: a two-paper written examination; Physical Standards Test and Physical Efficiency Test for written-qualified candidates; UPSC Interview/Personality Test for candidates qualifying PST/PET; and medical standards testing. Final merit is based on written-examination and interview/personality-test marks, while appointment also requires meeting medical standards.

The 2026 application deadline was March 12, 2026 and the examination was scheduled for July 19, 2026. Those dates, the fee, vacancy numbers, physical standards and eligibility conditions are cycle-specific, so prospective candidates should use the next UPSC notice rather than assume they will recur unchanged.

The UPSC selection design indicates the capabilities an aspirant should develop: logical reasoning, numerical ability and data interpretation; scientific and current-affairs awareness; knowledge of Indian polity, economy, history and geography; clear essay writing; English comprehension and communication; and the fitness required to meet PST/PET and medical standards.

For service readiness, the force’s statutory tasks and command provisions make physical resilience, sound judgement, disciplined leadership, communication, ethical conduct, administration and the ability to work with border communities especially relevant. These are role-aligned capabilities, not a substitute for the formal UPSC eligibility and medical requirements.

SSB is the border-guarding force assigned to the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders. Its charter also includes preventing cross-border crime and unauthorised movement, as well as civic-action work. Accordingly, an Assistant Commandant can expect assignments connected with border-area units and their operational, administrative or training requirements; the specific station and duties are determined by service needs.

The SSB Rules provide that officers and members of the regular force are liable for continuous service for the term set out in their appointment or applicable rules. They also provide that members may be required to perform duties connected with the force’s task, administration, discipline, training and welfare, as well as other duties assigned under law or by superior order.

The SSB Rules place Assistant Commandant as an officer rank below Deputy Commandant, Second-in-Command, Commandant, Deputy Inspector-General, Inspector-General, Additional Director-General and Director-General. For officers recruited through CAPF (AC), the 2026 Ministry of Home Affairs rules set Assistant Commandant at Level 10 and list the succeeding CAPF scales through Inspector General. The rules also provide for professional training during probation and state that promotion is available only when the eligibility conditions in the relevant recruitment rules are met. Progression therefore depends on applicable rules, training, performance, vacancies and service requirements.
