Quick facts
- Position and cadre
- Assistant Commandant is the entry Group A officer post recruited through the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) examination; CRPF is one of the participating forces. Force allocation is based on the examination process and candidates submit force preferences.
- Education requirement
- In the 2025 UPSC CAPF (AC) notice, the minimum qualification was a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification. Requirements should be checked against the notice for the applicable examination year.
- Selection stages
- The 2025 process comprised a written examination, Physical Standards/Physical Efficiency Tests, an UPSC Interview/Personality Test, and Medical Standards Tests; final merit was based on written-examination and interview marks, subject to medical fitness.
- Physical eligibility context
- For the 2025 examination, UPSC prescribed minimum physical standards and PET events, including timed 100 m and 800 m races, long jump, and—for men—shot put. The governing notice for a future cycle may change these standards.
- Promotion path
- CRPF lists the gazetted-officer progression as Assistant Commandant → Deputy Commandant → Second-in-Command → Commandant → DIGP → IGP, with stated qualifying-service thresholds at each stage.
Operational and administrative command
An Assistant Commandant is a gazetted CRPF officer expected to lead a service company during internal-security duties, plan, brief, and conduct company-level operations, command and supervise deployments, and train personnel for operational readiness. CRPF’s Assistant Commandant Promotion Course describes these as responsibilities inherent to the rank.
The role also carries substantial people-management and administration work: maintaining discipline, efficiency, morale and records; supervising and motivating subordinates; and carrying out gazetted-officer duties in a battalion or other institution. These responsibilities make the post a frontline leadership role rather than solely an examination-qualified desk post.
- Lead and supervise company-level operations and deployments.
- Train personnel and maintain operational preparedness.
- Manage discipline, administration, documentation, efficiency, and morale within the command.
Primary entry route: UPSC CAPF (AC) examination
The standard direct-entry route is the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) examination. In the 2025 notice, UPSC recruited Group A Assistant Commandants for BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB; applicants stated their force preferences as part of the process. Appointment to CRPF therefore follows success in the common examination and subsequent allocation, rather than a separate CRPF-only Assistant Commandant examination.
For the 2025 cycle, both male and female candidates were eligible. UPSC required a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification and set the ordinary age band at 20 to 25 years as on August 1, 2025, with specified relaxations. Those dates and conditions are historical, cycle-specific context—not a substitute for the next UPSC notification.
The assessed pathway included written papers, PST/PET for candidates qualifying the written stage, an Interview/Personality Test, and Medical Standards Tests. Candidates should treat the official UPSC notice for their own cycle as controlling for applications, eligibility, test standards, vacancies, fee, dates, and force-allocation preferences.
- Earn a recognized bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
- Apply to the annual UPSC CAPF (AC) examination when the official notice opens.
- Qualify the written examination, PST/PET, interview/personality test, and medical examination.
- Indicate CRPF among force preferences; final appointment depends on merit, eligibility, vacancies, and allocation rules.
Capabilities developed and assessed for the role
CRPF’s officer-training material identifies the practical capabilities expected at Assistant Commandant level: planning and briefing operations, conducting company-level tasks, command and deployment supervision, and training personnel. This supports preparation that combines physical readiness with tactical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to lead under demanding conditions.
The same official course material emphasizes administration, discipline, morale, document maintenance, and supervision of subordinate ranks. Accordingly, prospective officers benefit from organization, sound written communication, integrity, situational awareness, and the ability to motivate teams as well as operational fitness.
- Operational planning, briefing, and execution.
- Team leadership, supervision, discipline, and morale-building.
- Physical endurance and readiness for prescribed PST/PET and medical standards.
- Administrative control, record keeping, and professional written communication.
Where Assistant Commandants may serve
CRPF is a large nationwide force with general-duty, VIP-security, women, Rapid Action Force, CoBRA, signal, and special-duty units, alongside headquarters, group centres, training institutions, and hospitals. The organization’s published structure indicates that postings can span operational units and institutional or administrative establishments.
Assistant Commandants can also hold training-institution responsibilities. CRPF training pages show officers of Assistant Commandant/Deputy Commandant rank commanding faculties and serving as assistant principals or faculty officers. The exact posting, duties, accommodation, and hardship exposure vary by unit, location, operational requirement, and career stage.
- Operational battalions and specialized formations, including RAF and CoBRA.
- Headquarters, group centres, and other administrative establishments.
- Training institutions, where Assistant Commandants may perform instructional or leadership roles.
Career progression in CRPF’s gazetted officer cadre
CRPF publishes a defined promotional avenue for cadre officers after joining as Assistant Commandant. The next rank is Deputy Commandant, for which CRPF states five years as Assistant Commandant as the qualifying service. Further published thresholds are five years as Deputy Commandant, with 10 total years of Group A service, for Second-in-Command; five years as Second-in-Command, with 15 Group A years, for Commandant; three years as Commandant, with 20 Group A years, for DIGP; and three years as DIG, with 24 Group A years, for IGP.
These are qualifying-service benchmarks published by CRPF, not guarantees of promotion. Actual advancement remains subject to the applicable service rules, vacancies, performance and other conditions.
- Assistant Commandant → Deputy Commandant: 5 years as Assistant Commandant.
- Deputy Commandant → Second-in-Command: 5 years as Deputy Commandant and 10 total Group A years.
- Second-in-Command → Commandant: 5 years as Second-in-Command and 15 Group A years.
- Commandant → DIGP → IGP: CRPF publishes additional qualifying-service thresholds.
Compensation: pay-matrix context, not a fixed take-home figure
The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified Assistant Commandant as Level 10 in the central pay matrix in a CAPF-related vacancy document. The Seventh Central Pay Commission’s published entry-pay example for direct recruitment at Level 10 is ₹56,100 basic pay. This is useful as a base-pay reference, but not as a promise of a particular in-hand salary.
Monthly compensation can differ materially with current dearness allowance, house-rent or government-accommodation arrangements, eligible risk/hardship or field-related allowances, deductions, location, and assignment. CRPF’s welfare material, for example, records separate risk/hardship provisions for eligible operational deployments and a CoBRA-related allowance for eligible personnel, illustrating why total compensation is posting-dependent.
- Base-pay reference: Level 10, with the Seventh CPC’s stated direct-entry example of ₹56,100 basic pay.
- Allowances and take-home pay are variable and should be confirmed from current government orders and the appointment/posting terms.
- Operational or specialized assignments may have different eligible allowances.
