XAT

XAT is an MBA/PGDM entrance examination conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of XAMI members. The official XAT site describes it as being used for MBA/PGDM admissions and states that it is accepted by more than 250 B-schools; applicants should nevertheless confirm programme-specific acceptance, eligibility, cut-offs, and selection stages directly with each institute.

A BBE graduate normally fits the examination's discipline-neutral academic route: the published XAT 2027 eligibility criterion is a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years or equivalent, rather than a specified undergraduate major. Meeting the exam eligibility requirement does not itself create admission eligibility at every accepting school or programme.

• XAT is an entrance-test route, not a management degree or a job credential.
• XLRI and other institutes may use the score differently and may add their own application, shortlisting, interview, group-discussion, academic-profile, or work-experience requirements.

According to the official XAT 2027 FAQ, a candidate needs a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years' duration, or equivalent, in any discipline. Candidates who complete their final examinations by June 12, 2027 are also eligible to apply. Thus, a BBE holder or eligible final-year BBE student can use this route, subject to the stated completion condition.

For the XAT route described in the FAQ, Indian candidates appear for XAT; NRI, Foreign, OCI, and PIO candidates may apply through GMAT. This is exam-level guidance, so applicants should separately read the admissions policy of every programme to which they intend to apply.

The official XAT 2027 overview presents four areas: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA&LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA&DI), and General Knowledge (GK). The listed approximate distribution is 26 VA&LR questions, 21 DM questions, 28 QA&DI questions, and 20 GK questions. VA&LR includes reading comprehension, critical and analytical reasoning, vocabulary, grammar, para-jumbles, and related exercises; DM uses personal and professional scenarios; QA&DI covers foundational quantitative topics and data interpretation; and the GK split shown is eight static-GK and 12 current-affairs questions.

For XAT 2027, the authority lists a three-hour, 2:00 PM–5:00 PM session with no sectional time limits; candidates may begin with and switch among sections. The official pattern also lists one mark per question, a 0.25-mark deduction for wrong answers, and a 0.10-mark deduction for each unattempted question after the first eight. GK has no negative marking and is not included in the overall percentile/cut-off calculation, though XLRI says it may consider GK in its selection process.

As published for XAT 2027, registration opened on July 15, 2026 and is scheduled to close on December 6, 2026. The test is scheduled for January 3, 2027, and admit-card download is listed from December 20, 2026 on a tentative basis. Applicants should treat all timetable information as cycle-specific and re-check the official portal before acting.

The official process directs candidates to complete the online form, enter academic and work-experience details, select XLRI programmes if desired, select up to six preferred test cities, upload a photograph and signature, preview the form, and submit payment. The site cautions that applicant details cannot be edited after submission following payment; names should match certificates, mark sheets, and identity documents.

The published 2027 XAT registration fee is ₹2,300, with ₹200 additional for each XLRI programme selected. This is a dated fee for the 2027 cycle and can change; other XLRI/GMAT routes have separately listed fees.

• Keep the generated application form and payment receipt after a successful transaction.
• Choosing XAT does not automatically complete every school or programme's admissions requirements; check each target institute's official admissions page.

Build preparation around the four published areas rather than treating XAT as only a quantitative or verbal test. In particular, reserve dedicated practice time for Decision Making: the official description says these questions use personal and professional scenarios and require critical thinking, problem-solving, and prioritisation. For QA&DI, practise arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern mathematics, and interpreting and analysing data; for VA&LR, practise reading comprehension, reasoning, vocabulary, grammar, and paragraph-ordering-style tasks.

Use full-length timed practice under the current three-hour overall limit. Because XAT states that candidates may move among sections and that unanswered-question penalties begin after eight skips, review attempts as well as accuracy: choose a section order, test whether switching helps, and practise a deliberate strategy for difficult questions. This is a preparation inference from the official format, not an official prescribed strategy.

• Practise Decision Making separately; its scenario-based format is a distinctive XAT component.
• Use the on-screen-calculator feature in practice where possible, but do not rely on it instead of quantitative fluency.
• Recheck the final information bulletin and instructions before the examination because patterns and operational rules can be revised.

A XAT result can be used to seek admission to MBA/PGDM programmes at XLRI and other accepting business schools. The official XAT site says the exam is accepted by more than 250 B-schools, but acceptance alone should not be read as an offer of admission or as a common cut-off policy.

At XLRI, the published admissions overview states that candidates may apply to multiple programmes and that selection criteria can vary by programme. It says shortlisting and final selection can consider XAT performance alongside factors such as academic background, relevant work experience, extracurricular activities, and personal interviews and/or group discussions. Applicants should therefore prepare for the post-score admission stages and verify the specific programme's current selection rules.
