UPSC Indian Forest Service Examination

The UPSC Indian Forest Service Examination is the competitive recruitment route for the Indian Forest Service (IFoS). UPSC uses the shared Civil Services Preliminary Examination to screen candidates, then conducts the IFoS Main written examination and personality test to select candidates against IFoS vacancies reported for that examination year.

The career outcome is a role in an All India Service concerned with ecological security and forest-resource management. The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, describes IFoS as one of the three All India Services and frames its work around managing forest and wildlife resources sustainably.

• The 2026 notice estimated about 80 vacancies, but this figure was expressly provisional and may change.
• Final ranking is based on the IFoS Main written examination and personality test; preliminary marks do not count toward final merit.

For the 2026 examination, applicants needed an eligible nationality status, had to be 21 to 32 years old on 1 August 2026, and had to meet the prescribed physical and medical standards. The notice provides category-specific upper-age relaxations, so applicants should always use the notice for their own cycle rather than relying on a prior year’s dates.

The degree requirement is discipline-specific. A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least one of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or Zoology; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering qualifies. Candidates awaiting qualifying-degree results may appear provisionally, but must provide proof of passing if called for the personality test.

The 2026 rules allowed six attempts for most candidates, unlimited attempts for otherwise eligible SC/ST candidates, and nine attempts for otherwise eligible OBC candidates. An appearance in even one preliminary paper counts as an attempt; PwBD provisions have additional, category-linked rules.

• B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry are directly aligned with the listed Agriculture and Forestry qualifying degrees.
• A qualifying academic degree does not by itself establish appointment eligibility: medical/physical standards and document verification also apply.
• Check the cycle-specific notification for nationality, age-relaxation, PwBD, medical-fitness, and attempt provisions.

The preliminary stage is the Civil Services Preliminary Examination: two compulsory objective papers of 200 marks each. General Studies Paper II is qualifying at 33%, while the preliminary stage is only a screening test and its marks are not included in final IFoS merit. UPSC applies one-third negative marking for an incorrect objective answer.

The IFoS Main written examination has six conventional, essay-type papers: General English (300 marks), General Knowledge (300 marks), and two optional subjects, each with two 200-mark papers. The personality test carries 300 marks, and Main written plus interview marks determine final ranking.

Available optional subjects for the 2026 cycle were Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology. Some pairings are prohibited, including Agriculture with Forestry and Mathematics with Statistics. Main answers and question papers are in English, and each written paper is three hours.

• Preliminary preparation must cover the Civil Services Preliminary syllabus, including current events, polity, geography, environment/ecology, biodiversity, climate change, reasoning, and basic numeracy.
• The optional-subject syllabi are broadly at honours-degree level—above bachelor’s and below master’s level, except engineering subjects, which correspond to bachelor’s-degree level.

UPSC requires online application through its application portal. In the 2026 notice, applicants had to complete a Universal Registration Number profile, Common Application Form, and examination-specific module, and submit requested supporting documents such as those supporting date of birth and educational qualification claims. UPSC stated that failure to provide required information or documents could cancel candidature.

For the 2026 cycle, the downloadable revised notice gave 24 February 2026, 18:00 hours as the online-application closing time, while the examination landing page displays 27 February 2026, 18:00. Because UPSC issued the revised notice, applicants should treat the current cycle’s downloadable notification and portal instructions as controlling rather than reuse an older deadline.

The 2026 preliminary fee was ₹100 for candidates not exempt; candidates admitted to Main were to pay a further ₹200. Women and SC/ST/PwBD candidates were exempt under that cycle’s rules, while OBC/EWS candidates were not exempt. Fees, exemptions, portal workflow, documents, and dates can change by cycle.

For forward planning, UPSC’s annual calendar published on 20 May 2026 lists 13 January 2027 for notification, 2 February 2027 for applications, 23 May 2027 for the shared preliminary examination, and 21 November 2027 for IFoS Main. The calendar expressly says dates are liable to alteration.

• Read the full cycle notice before choosing examination centre and optional subjects.
• After preliminary qualification, UPSC requires candidates to log in during the specified post-result window to update/reconfirm details and submit the Main-stage application.
• Do not assume that an e-admit card proves final eligibility; UPSC verifies eligibility against original documents at the prescribed stage.

Build two linked plans: a Civil Services Preliminary plan for the screening test and an IFoS Main plan for General English, General Knowledge, and two technical optional subjects. The official syllabus specifies the preliminary content and makes clear that the Main optional papers require honours-degree-level preparation in the selected disciplines.

Choose optionals only after checking both the permitted list and prohibited combinations. Agriculture and Forestry graduates have a natural academic connection to the Agriculture and Forestry options, but eligibility does not require selecting one’s degree subject; the choice must comply with UPSC’s subject-combination rules.

Use UPSC’s official previous-question-paper archive to practise the format and depth of the written papers. For the interview, prepare to explain academic choices, forestry/environmental issues, public-service motivation, and field-oriented suitability; UPSC’s personality-test description specifically includes judgment, leadership, integrity, topographical sense, love of outdoor life, and desire to explore unfamiliar places.

• Practise objective questions with negative-marking discipline for prelims.
• Practise three-hour, English-language conventional answers for all Main papers.
• Map each optional’s official syllabus to undergraduate notes, standard references, answer-writing practice, and past papers rather than relying only on coaching materials.

Candidates recommended through the examination are appointed to the Indian Forest Service subject to applicable eligibility, medical fitness, cadre-allotment policy, and other government requirements. The 2026 notice says cadre preferences are collected as prescribed and that cadre allocation is governed by the policy in force at the time of allotment.

Selected officer trainees undertake probationer training. IGNFA states that the current IFoS training is 20 months, alongside a four-month Foundation Course at LBSNAA; its detailed training guidance describes 16 months at IGNFA and four months of on-the-job training in cadre states or Union Territories. The programme includes professional forestry training, field exercises, study tours, classroom work, and specialised modules.

The examination is highly competitive: the 2026 notice says that roughly 12 to 13 times the vacancies may be admitted from prelims to Main, and roughly twice the vacancies may be summoned for the personality test. These are selection-process ratios, not guarantees for future cycles.

• IFoS work and training are oriented toward forest, wildlife, environmental, and natural-resource management.
• Candidates who reach the final interview but are not recommended may opt into UPSC’s specified employment-information sharing mechanism; participation is consent-based under the 2026 notice.
