TOEFL iBT

TOEFL iBT is an ETS English-language test designed around academic communication. ETS states that it measures Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing as they are used in classrooms, using academic content and integrated tasks. For an Indian applicant, it is generally relevant when a chosen overseas university, programme, scholarship body or other recipient asks for TOEFL iBT evidence; confirm acceptance and the required score directly with every recipient rather than relying on a general acceptance list.

As of ETS’s current score-reporting policy, institutions may express requirements using either the newer 1–6 scale or a legacy 0–120 scale during the transition. An official report for a test taken on or after January 21, 2026 includes the 1–6 results and a comparable 0–120 overall-score estimate, but each institution decides which scores and score-reporting arrangements it accepts.

• Use the test only after checking the destination programme’s English-language requirement, minimum section and overall scores, accepted test modes, and application deadline.
• Do not treat an ETS destination-search listing as final confirmation: ETS says its results are a guide and directs applicants to verify with institutions.

For testing in India, ETS lists a passport bearing the candidate’s name, photograph and signature as the acceptable primary identification document for a person testing within their country of citizenship. The name and date of birth entered at registration must exactly match the identification used on test day; ETS warns that a mismatch can prevent testing and result in loss of the test fee.

Candidates who need disability- or health-related testing accommodations should begin early. ETS states that qualifying accommodations must be approved before registration.

• Check the India-specific ID page before booking, especially if citizenship, test location or passport details differ from the usual case.
• For Home Edition, separately review ETS’s technical, room, identity-verification and proctoring requirements before choosing that delivery mode.

For TOEFL iBT tests from January 21, 2026 onward, ETS describes an adaptive test with four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The published task types include Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and an academic passage in Reading; response, conversation, announcement and academic-talk tasks in Listening; sentence-building, email and academic-discussion tasks in Writing; and listen-and-repeat plus interview tasks in Speaking.

ETS gives an approximate base time of 30 minutes for Reading, 29 minutes for Listening, 23 minutes for Writing and 8 minutes for Speaking. Directions are additional, and ETS advises allowing about two hours in total; because the test adapts, time and item counts may vary.

The current report gives a score for each of the four skills and an overall score on the 1–6 scale in half-point increments. The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS also provides a comparable 0–120 overall estimate during the transition period beginning January 2026.

• Test center delivery is computer-based at an authorized center.
• Home Edition delivery is computer-based at home with live human proctoring; confirm that the intended university accepts this mode before registering.

Create an ETS account, choose an available test appointment and register online or by phone. Enter the name and date of birth exactly as shown on the ID document that will be presented on test day. ETS recommends choosing a test date two to three months before the earliest admissions deadline and registering roughly four months before the desired test date; this is planning guidance, not an admissions deadline.

For applicants in India, ETS’s currently displayed registration fee is ₹15,254. ETS also lists separate, variable charges for late registration, rescheduling, score review and additional score reports. Recheck the official India page at the point of booking, because fees and policies can change.

The test fee includes up to four official score reports for recipients selected by the applicable cutoff. Official scores for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 are posted to the ETS account approximately three days after the test; recipient delivery time depends on the recipient’s delivery method. Build this processing time and the university’s own application deadline into the plan.

• Before payment: verify the programme’s deadline, its required overall and section scores, whether it accepts Home Edition, and its institutional score-recipient details.
• Before test day: ensure the passport and ETS-account details match exactly.
• After testing: download the ETS score report when available and confirm with the university that official scores were received if its application system requires this.

Base preparation on the format that applies to the planned test date. For the post–January 21, 2026 version, practise the published task families across all four skills and become comfortable with the adaptive computer-based experience. ETS offers official preparation materials, including free interactive sample questions and free full-length practice tests, alongside paid options.

Use timed practice to identify a skill-level constraint, then practise targeted academic reading, listening, writing and speaking tasks. Before relying on a score target, compare the programme’s required section and overall scores with the current ETS score-report format; universities can update their admissions pages at different times.

• Take at least one official full-length practice test under realistic timing conditions.
• Practise the exact current Writing and Speaking task types rather than studying only older TOEFL formats.
• Use official materials to learn the interface and score-report scale; use other resources only as supplementary practice.

ETS posts official TOEFL iBT scores for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 approximately three days after the test date, and the scores remain valid for two years. The test fee includes up to four official score reports; additional reports can be ordered through the ETS account for a fee. Delivery to a designated institution varies by delivery channel, so an applicant should not equate ETS score availability with completion of the university’s application review.

There is no universal “good” TOEFL score. ETS states that the relevant score is the score needed by the institution being applied to, and institutions set their own requirements. Applicants should therefore use the score report to meet a specifically verified recipient requirement, not as a standalone admission guarantee.

• Keep a PDF copy of the report, but follow the recipient’s instructions on official electronic delivery.
• Scores older than two years cannot be reported or verified by ETS.
• If retesting is needed, ETS’s bulletin says there is no overall limit on attempts, but a test taker cannot take the test more than once in a three-day period.
