Quick facts

What it is
SBI PO is State Bank of India’s recruitment process for appointment as Probationary Officers; the 2025–26 notification invited online applications from eligible Indian citizens.
Qualification benchmark
In the 2025–26 cycle, SBI required a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university (or a Central Government-recognised equivalent); final-year/semester students could apply provisionally, subject to passing by the stipulated date.
Selection stages
The 2025–26 process had three phases: online Preliminary Examination, online Main Examination, and Phase III comprising a psychometric test, group exercise, and personal interview.
2025–26 application window
For the 2025–26 notification, online registration and fee payment ran from 24 June 2025 through 14 July 2025. This is historic, cycle-specific information—not a future deadline.
Where to verify notices
SBI states that recruitment notices, schedules, results, and related information are published through its official careers sites; candidates should rely on those sites rather than purported selection letters or lists from other sources.

Purpose and role

SBI PO is a competitive hiring route into State Bank of India’s officer cadre. SBI’s 2025–26 advertisement describes recruitment for appointment as Probationary Officers and says selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. On joining, selected candidates are designated Probationary Officers and may be placed on probation under the bank’s policy.

  • The role is an entry route to Junior Management Grade Scale-I after successful completion of the recruitment, joining, and probation requirements.
  • The notification-specific terms matter: SBI can alter vacancies or the process, and appointment remains subject to document, antecedent, and medical verification.

Eligibility

Eligibility must be checked against the advertisement for the particular cycle. In the 2025–26 cycle, applicants had to be Indian citizens, be 21–30 years old as of 1 April 2025, and hold a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. Final-year students could apply provisionally if they met the notification’s proof-of-passing deadline.

  • For 2025–26, the upper-age relaxation stated was 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), 5 years for SC/ST, and 10/13/15 years for PwBD candidates in UR/EWS, OBC, and SC/ST categories respectively; other specified categories also had provisions. These details can change by notification.
  • The 2025–26 notice capped attempts at 4 for UR/EWS, 7 for UR/EWS PwBD/OBC/OBC PwBD, and imposed no restriction for SC/ST categories; appearing only in prelims did not count as an attempt.
  • Candidates seeking reserved-category benefits or age relaxation had to provide prescribed valid certificates at verification; the current cycle’s notice controls.

Exam and selection format

The 2025–26 SBI PO selection process used a three-phase design. Phase I was a one-hour online preliminary objective test: English Language (40 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (30), and Reasoning Ability (30), each with a separate 20-minute time limit. SBI shortlisted approximately ten times the category-wise vacancies to the main examination based on preliminary merit, without a sectional cut-off at prelim level.

The online Main Examination comprised a 200-mark objective test over three hours and a 50-mark, 30-minute descriptive communication-skills test typed on the computer. Phase III included a psychometric test, group exercise, and personal interview. In the 2025–26 scheme, final merit used Main Examination and Phase III marks—not Preliminary Examination marks—and objective-test wrong answers attracted a one-quarter-mark penalty.

  • 2025–26 Main objective subjects: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude; Data Analysis & Interpretation; General Awareness/Economy/Banking Knowledge; and English Language.
  • The 2025–26 descriptive component covered emails, reports, situation analysis, and précis writing, subject to the detailed instructions and corrigenda for that cycle.
  • SBI provides scribe and compensatory-time provisions for eligible candidates under the applicable rules; candidates needing them should declare this in the online application and follow the notification’s documentation requirements.

Application process

Apply only through the SBI careers portal when a relevant PO application link is live. For the 2025–26 cycle, SBI accepted online applications only; applicants registered online, uploaded the prescribed photograph, signature, thumb impression, and handwritten declaration, checked the form before final submission, and paid online through the integrated payment gateway. SBI stated that changes were not allowed after final submission.

The 2025–26 fee was ₹750 for UR/EWS/OBC applicants and nil for SC/ST/PwBD applicants; this was non-refundable. It is dated, cycle-specific fee context and must be rechecked in the next notification. SBI required an active email address and mobile number through declaration of results for communications and call letters.

  • Read the detailed advertisement before applying; preserve the registration number, password, e-receipt, and submitted application printout.
  • Use only official SBI careers domains to check application links, corrigenda, call letters, schedules, and results.
  • The 2025–26 application dates—24 June to 14 July 2025—have passed and should not be treated as an upcoming window.

Preparation approach

Build preparation around the official, notification-specific test structure rather than assuming an older syllabus or pattern remains unchanged. For the 2025–26 pattern, this means practising timed prelims across English, quantitative aptitude, and reasoning; then preparing for the longer main objective sections, banking/economy awareness, and computer-typed descriptive communication tasks. Because the official scheme used separate section timings and negative marking in objective tests, timed practice and accuracy control are directly relevant.

Before each exam, read SBI’s official “Acquaint Yourself” booklet and the call letter carefully. The booklets describe the online assessment and venue requirements, including identity documentation and restrictions on items such as calculators, phones, notes, and smart watches.

  • Use the official preliminary and main booklets to familiarise yourself with online-test instructions and document requirements.
  • Practise the main descriptive formats specified in the current notice; in 2025–26 these included email, report, situation-analysis, and précis tasks.
  • Track SBI’s official current-openings and recruitment-results pages for amendments, as SBI says changes and updates are hosted on its website.

Selection outcomes and employment context

Candidates who qualify through the process and complete appointment formalities may join SBI as Probationary Officers. Under the 2025–26 notice, selected candidates had to complete an online basic-banking course before joining, execute a ₹2 lakh service bond for a minimum three-year period, and could be on probation for two years with continuous assessment before confirmation in Junior Management Grade Scale-I. These are notification-specific employment terms and should be checked again for any subsequent recruitment.

As dated salary context only, the 2025–26 notice listed starting basic pay of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments, and an approximate initial Mumbai-centre CTC of ₹20.43 lakh, with allowances and benefits governed by rules in force. Pay, location-based CTC, benefits, bond terms, and probation terms are variable and should not be assumed for a later cycle.

  • Final selection in 2025–26 required qualifying separately in Main Examination and Phase III; SBI formed final merit from normalized Main and Phase III marks.
  • Appointment remained conditional on verification of credentials and other formalities, including medical examination and antecedent verification.
  • SBI stated that officers may be posted anywhere in India.
