What RBI Grade B is for

RBI Grade B is a direct-recruitment route into officer roles at the Reserve Bank of India. The 2026 recruitment notice covered General, DEPR, and DSIM cadres. RBI describes Grade B work as spanning an array of roles within a full-service central bank, with the precise work depending on posting and cadre.

  • The General cadre is the broad officer stream.
  • DEPR is the economics and policy-research stream.
  • DSIM is the statistics and information-management stream.

Eligibility: choose the cadre that matches your qualification

Eligibility is set separately for each recruitment cycle and cadre. In the 2026 notice, candidates needed to meet nationality, age, education, and other conditions as of the notice’s specified cutoff date. Applicants should use the current RBI notice rather than relying on an earlier year’s thresholds.

For Grade B (DR)–General in 2026, RBI accepted a recognised graduation/equivalent technical or professional qualification with at least 60% aggregate marks, or a recognised post-graduation/equivalent qualification with at least 55%. Eligible SC/ST/PwBD candidates had the relaxations stated in the notice where posts were reserved. DEPR required specified economics or finance master’s qualifications; DSIM required specified statistics, mathematics, econometrics, informatics, data-science, AI, or related qualifications at the master’s level, or an eligible four-year bachelor’s degree in listed fields.

  • 2026 base age band: 21–30 years as of April 1, 2026; the notice listed category-, qualification-, and experience-based upper-age relaxations.
  • For General/EWS candidates, the 2026 notice barred applying after six prior Phase-I appearances; it stated that this restriction did not apply to SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates where posts were reserved.
  • Candidates could apply for either DEPR or DSIM, according to the 2026 notice; applicants should confirm the choices available in the relevant year’s advertisement.

Selection format

RBI’s 2026 scheme provides for Phase-I and Phase-II examinations, conducted online and/or in written mode depending on cadre, followed by an interview. Progression is sequential: candidates must be shortlisted at the earlier stage to advance.

For the General cadre, RBI’s official 2024 Phase-II result notice identifies the three Phase-II papers as Economic and Social Issues, English (Writing Skills), and General Finance and Management. Candidates should treat the current recruitment advertisement and its appendices as controlling, because scheduling, modality, and other details may be revised from one panel year to another.

  • Panel year 2026 scheduled General Phase-I for June 13, 2026 and General Phase-II for July 25, 2026.

  • RBI states that candidates must appear in all required Phase-II papers and shifts.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online only through RBI’s website; the 2026 notice states that no other submission mode is available. Applicants should first verify their cadre-specific eligibility, complete the online application, upload/provide the required information and documents as directed, pay the applicable fee or intimation charge, and preserve the registration details and application record.

Eligibility is finally checked by the RBI Services Board at the interview stage. The notice warns that incorrect information or failure to meet the conditions can result in cancellation of candidature, including after provisional admission to examinations. RBI also says corrigenda, if issued, will be published on its website.

  • For the 2026 cycle, the application window was April 29–May 20, 2026, and is now closed as of July 19, 2026.
  • The 2026 notice provided a two-day post-closing edit window for limited fields; future edit-window availability and fields are not guaranteed.

Appointment and career context

Successful candidates are appointed as Officers in Grade B in the cadre for which they are selected. The 2026 notice states that General-stream selectees join the General Cadre, while DEPR and DSIM selectees join their respective cadres. Initial appointment is on probation for two years, which RBI may extend up to four years, and selected candidates are liable to be posted and transferred anywhere in India.

Compensation is variable and should be read as dated context rather than a guaranteed future figure. The April 2026 notice listed starting basic pay of ₹78,450 per month in the stated Grade B scale and approximately ₹154,936 initial monthly gross emoluments without HRA, alongside allowances and benefits subject to rules in force. It also stated that defined-contribution NPS applies to employees joining RBI on or after January 1, 2012, in addition to gratuity.
