Quick facts

Conducting body and role
RBI Assistant is a Reserve Bank of India recruitment examination for appointment to the Assistant post in RBI offices.
Most recent notified cycle
The Assistant – Panel Year 2025 notification, dated February 16, 2026, advertised 650 vacancies; RBI stated that vacancies could be increased, decreased, or left unfilled according to requirements.
Selection stages
Under the 2026 notification, selection is through an online Preliminary Examination, online Main Examination, and a Language Proficiency Test (LPT).
Baseline eligibility in the latest cycle
As of February 1, 2026, candidates generally needed to be 20–28 years old, hold a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks (pass class for SC/ST/PwBD candidates), know PC word processing, and be proficient in the relevant recruiting-office state language.
Latest-cycle fee context
For the 2026 cycle, the non-refundable charge was ₹50 plus 18% GST for SC/ST/PwBD/EXS candidates and ₹450 plus 18% GST for GEN/OBC/EWS candidates; bank transaction charges were extra. These amounts can change in a later notification.

What RBI Assistant is

RBI Assistant is a nationwide competitive recruitment route to the Assistant post at the Reserve Bank of India. The latest official notification describes recruitment across RBI offices and makes selection conditional on clearing preliminary and main online examinations followed by the LPT.

The examination is office-specific: applicants select one recruiting office, and the vacancy distribution, local-language requirement, and examination-centre options are linked to that choice. The notification also states that an applicant may apply for a vacancy in only one office.

  • The 2026 Panel Year 2025 notice advertised 650 posts across 17 recruiting offices.
  • RBI may revise the number of vacancies or decide not to fill vacancies, so a notification’s vacancy total is not a permanent annual intake figure.

Eligibility: use the notification for the cycle you apply to

Eligibility is cycle-specific. In the Assistant – Panel Year 2025 notice, the general age band was 20–28 years as on February 1, 2026; the notice also set category-specific upper-age relaxations, including five years for SC/ST and three years for OBC candidates. Applicants should not assume these cut-offs or relaxations will be identical in a future cycle.

For education, the latest notice required a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% aggregate marks, while SC/ST/PwBD candidates could use a pass class where the relevant reservation was available. It also required knowledge of word processing on PC. Candidates for a recruiting office had to be able to read, write, speak, and understand the official/local language of the applicable state or states.

Nationality was not limited only to Indian citizens in the notice: it also listed certain specified Nepalese, Bhutanese, Tibetan-refugee, and persons-of-Indian-origin categories, subject where applicable to a Government of India eligibility certificate. Ex-servicemen had a separate education/service route set out in the notification.

  • Check the notification’s stated eligibility date; qualifications must be completed by that date.
  • Check the office-wise vacancy table before choosing an office.
  • Treat local-language proficiency as a compulsory selection condition, not merely a preference.

Exam format and selection rules

The latest notified preliminary examination was an objective online test of 100 questions and 100 marks in 60 minutes: English Language (30 questions/20 minutes), Numerical Ability (35/20 minutes), and Reasoning Ability (35/20 minutes). Candidates must qualify in the preliminary examination to proceed to the main examination.

The Main Examination was an objective online test of 200 questions and 200 marks in 135 minutes: Reasoning, English Language, Numerical Ability, General Awareness, and Computer Knowledge, with 40 questions in each test. The notice specifies sectional timing: 30, 30, 30, 25, and 20 minutes respectively.

Wrong answers attract a penalty of one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question in both objective tests. Candidates provisionally shortlisted from Main must take the LPT in the official/local language for the relevant state; a candidate who is not proficient in that language is disqualified.

  • Prelims: 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes.
  • Mains: 200 questions, 200 marks, 135 minutes.
  • The English-language test is excluded from the multilingual availability provision; the notice says other online tests are offered in English, Hindi, and specified additional languages.
  • RBI states that candidates must qualify in each objective-test part separately.

How to apply and what to watch for

RBI requires online-only applications through its official recruitment site; it does not accept another submission mode. In the latest cycle, candidates registered online, supplied basic details, uploaded the prescribed images/documents, reviewed the form, completed registration, and paid through the integrated payment gateway.

The 2026 application window was initially February 16–March 8, 2026, and RBI later extended the closing time to 23:59 on March 10, 2026 because candidates had faced technical difficulties. Those dates are historical and must not be used as a deadline forecast for a future RBI Assistant cycle.

The notification required a recent photograph, signature, left-thumb impression, and handwritten declaration, as well as a personal email address kept active through results. It also instructed candidates to retain the registration credentials, e-receipt, and application printout. Eligibility is ultimately checked at document verification, so submitting an application does not establish eligibility.

  • Apply only via RBI’s official recruitment/vacancy pages and the linked registration portal.
  • Read corrigenda and notices on RBI’s site: RBI says corrigenda for the advertisement are published there.
  • Match the name in the form exactly to the photo identification document used at the examination.
  • Choose the recruiting office and associated examination-centre state carefully; the latest notice allowed only one office application.

Preparation aligned to the notified scheme

A practical preparation plan should mirror the official stage and section structure: prepare English, numerical ability, and reasoning for the timed Preliminary Examination; then add general awareness and computer knowledge for Main. Because every test is separately timed, practice should include sectional time limits rather than only full-length untimed question sets.

Accuracy should be trained alongside speed: RBI’s latest scheme deducts one-fourth of the marks for each incorrect objective answer. Candidates should also prepare for the local-language LPT early, especially if applying outside their primary language area, because failure to demonstrate proficiency is disqualifying.

Use the information handout and instructions made available with the official call letter for the applicable cycle as the controlling source for operational examination details, accommodations, and venue procedures.

  • Run 20-minute practice sets for each Preliminary section.
  • Run Main-section practice at the notification’s 20-, 25-, and 30-minute limits.
  • Use error logs to reduce avoidable guesses under the 0.25-mark negative marking rule.
  • Confirm the official/local language required for the selected recruiting office before applying.

Appointment and compensation context

Candidates who clear the relevant stages are considered for appointment as RBI Assistants, subject to document verification and being declared medically fit under Bank rules. RBI’s general recruitment process also says that, after selection and acceptance of the offer, candidates must complete formalities that can include medical testing, police verification, referee reporting, and employer reporting before receiving an appointment letter.

Compensation is variable and should be treated as dated notification context. The February 2026 Assistant notice stated a starting basic pay of ₹29,000 per month on the specified pay scale and approximate initial gross monthly emoluments of ₹58,514 without HRA; it also stated that 15% of pay as HRA would be paid additionally where the employee was not staying in Bank accommodation. Allowances and service benefits are governed by rules in force from time to time.

  • Appointment is not final merely on exam performance: eligibility documents and medical fitness remain conditions.
  • The latest notice listed benefits such as Bank accommodation subject to availability and eligibility, medical facilities/reimbursements, leave fare concession, and certain advances/loans subject to service requirements.
  • Do not rely on the 2026 salary or benefit figures for a future recruitment notification without checking the new notice.
