Quick facts

What GPAT is
Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) is a national-level examination associated with entry to M.Pharm courses and the award of M.Pharm scholarships to qualified candidates.
Conducting arrangement
The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has an MoU with the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to conduct GPAT; NBEMS conducts the examination, declares the result, and transfers results to PCI.
2026 eligibility baseline
For GPAT 2026, applicants had to be Indian citizens and hold a recognised four-year B.Pharm degree (including lateral-entry students), or an equivalent qualification. Specified final-year and pre-final-year B.Pharm students could also appear subject to the bulletin's result-timing conditions.
2026 exam format
GPAT 2026 was an English-language computer-based MCQ exam: 125 questions, 500 marks, and 180 minutes. Correct answers earned 4 marks, incorrect answers lost 1 mark, and unattempted questions had no deduction.
2026 cycle status
The 2026 application window ran from December 23, 2025 to January 12, 2026; the exam was held on March 7, 2026 and NBEMS declared the result on April 7, 2026. These are past, cycle-specific dates rather than a forecast for a later cycle.
Use and validity of the 2026 score
The GPAT 2026 score was stated to be valid for three years and accepted by PCI-approved or affiliated university departments, constituent or affiliated colleges, and institutions for M.Pharm and PhD admissions.

Purpose and place in the pharmacy pathway

GPAT is the national examination connected with progression from B.Pharm into M.Pharm. PCI initiated the current arrangement for conducting GPAT and scholarship disbursement, and NBEMS conducts the test under its MoU with PCI. The exam is therefore relevant to pharmacy graduates seeking M.Pharm admission and, where applicable, GPAT-linked postgraduate scholarship consideration.

A GPAT appearance or score is not itself an admission offer or scholarship award. NBEMS states that admission selection remains subject to the criteria of the relevant state government or admission committee, while document verification and eligibility determination occur during the applicable counselling or admission process.

  • Use the GPAT score together with the admission process prescribed by the target university, institution, state authority, or admission committee.
  • Treat NBEMS as the examination and result authority; it does not conduct M.Pharm counselling or disburse scholarships.

Eligibility

The GPAT 2026 bulletin required Indian citizenship and a B.Pharm degree from a recognised university: a four-year course after 10+2, including lateral-entry students, or an equivalent qualification. It also allowed specified candidates appearing in B.Pharm final year or pre-final year, provided their results would be declared before the corresponding M.Pharm admission cycle stated in the bulletin.

This describes the 2026 cycle only. Applicants for a future cycle should check that year's official GPAT bulletin because NBEMS states that instructions may be changed through updated bulletins or corrigenda.

  • For M.Pharm itself, PCI's regulations provide for a B.Pharm degree from a PCI-approved institution and normally at least 55% aggregate marks; the 2020 amendment provides a 50% threshold for SC/ST candidates and for candidates with at least five years of professional experience after B.Pharm.
  • PCI's regulations also require a student selected for a postgraduate pharmacy course at a pharmacy institution to have State Pharmacy Council registration, or obtain it within one month of admission; otherwise, the admission is cancelled.

Exam format and syllabus

In 2026, GPAT was a single-session, computer-based multiple-choice test. It contained 125 English-language questions with four options each, had a maximum of 500 marks, and allowed 180 minutes. The 2026 blueprint allocated 38 questions each to Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics, 28 to Pharmacology, 10 to Pharmacognosy, and 11 to other B.Pharm subjects.

The 2026 syllabus was tied to the subject and knowledge areas in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Course Regulations, 2024. Marking was +4 for a correct response, −1 for an incorrect response, and 0 for an unattempted item.

  • The 2026 test used time-bound sections; candidates could not move ahead before a section's time began or revisit a completed section.
  • The published blueprint is described as indicative, so candidates should use the next cycle's bulletin as the controlling source.

Application process

For the 2026 cycle, candidates applied online through the NBEMS process: create a user registration and application ID, complete the form, upload the prescribed photograph, signature, thumb impression and documents, select a test city, pay the fee, accept the declaration, submit, and retain the completed application with successful-payment status. Submission was complete only after successful payment.

The 2026 examination fee was ₹3,500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and ₹2,500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, excluding any payment-gateway charges. This is dated, cycle-specific fee context and should not be assumed for a later GPAT cycle.

  • In the 2026 cycle, the application window was December 23, 2025 to January 12, 2026; an edit window followed from January 16 to January 19, 2026. Those deadlines have passed.
  • In the 2026 edit window, name, test city, nationality, mobile number, Aadhaar number and email ID could not be changed.
  • Use only the official NBEMS GPAT page and the current information bulletin for future application dates, documents, fees, and correction rules.

Preparation approach

Base preparation on the official B.Pharm knowledge areas rather than on unofficial topic lists. For the 2026 blueprint, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics together represented 76 of 125 questions, while Pharmacology represented 28; a study plan can therefore give substantial practice time to those areas while still covering Pharmacognosy and the remaining B.Pharm subjects.

Practise in the actual decision environment: English-language four-option MCQs, 125 questions in 180 minutes, and −1 for an incorrect answer. Because the 2026 test used time-bound sections, candidates should also rehearse section pacing rather than relying only on full-paper untimed revision.

  • Map revision notes and question practice to the current official B.Pharm regulations named in the GPAT bulletin.
  • Use the official NBEMS demo test when it is made available for the relevant cycle, and read the current bulletin's test-day and computer-based-test instructions.
  • Review uncertain-answer strategy in light of the stated 25% negative marking; leave questions unattempted only as a deliberate decision, since unattempted items receive zero rather than a penalty.

Results, admission and next steps

For GPAT 2026, NBEMS said that a candidate qualified for M.Pharm admission, M.Pharm scholarship consideration, and PhD-course purposes only when the applicable minimum percentile was met and the candidate fell within the top 10% of appeared candidates in merit order, subject to the applicable reservation policy. The stated minimums were the 50th percentile for General/EWS and the 45th percentile for OBC, SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

A GPAT 2026 score was valid for three years for M.Pharm and PhD admissions at PCI-approved or affiliated university departments, constituent or affiliated colleges, and institutions. However, each admission remains governed by the relevant institution or state-level process; GPAT does not automatically secure a seat or scholarship.

  • GPAT 2026 was held on March 7, 2026, and its result was declared on April 7, 2026.
  • After receiving a score, follow the relevant counselling or institutional admission notice, meet that authority's document and eligibility requirements, and verify that the intended pharmacy institution is appropriately PCI-approved.
  • M.Pharm is ordinarily a four-semester, two-academic-year programme under PCI's revised regulations.
