FMGE

FMGE is a qualifying screening examination, not a medical degree or an admissions examination. It was introduced under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002. NBEMS states that an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India with a primary medical qualification awarded by an institution outside India who seeks provisional or permanent registration with the relevant medical council must qualify the screening test where applicable.

NBEMS’s role is to conduct the examination, publish the result, and provide the result to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and State Medical Councils. Candidates qualified in FMGE receive a Screening Test Pass Certificate only after NBEMS completes in-person verification of examination biometrics/Face ID and prescribed documents.

• FMGE is therefore a key post-degree eligibility step for many foreign medical graduates pursuing registration to practise in India.
• Passing FMGE alone should not be treated as automatic registration: registration and any applicable internship requirements are administered under the relevant NMC and State Medical Council rules.

For FMGE June 2026, NBEMS required the applicant to be an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), to possess a primary medical qualification recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country where the awarding institution is located, and to provide confirmation/attestation as required through the concerned Indian Embassy or apostille process.

The final-examination result for the primary medical qualification had to have been declared on or before 30 April 2026 for that session. NBEMS also required documentary proof that the candidate had completed the required course components and had declared results by the session cut-off. That date was specific to June 2026 and must not be reused for a future FMGE session.

Eligibility Certificate or NEET-UG-related requirements can depend on when the candidate entered the foreign medical course. The June 2026 bulletin notes the applicable historical exemptions and requirements, while NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations and related notices govern important course and training conditions for relevant cohorts. Applicants should check the bulletin for their own session and their admission-date cohort before applying.

• Typical documents identified by NBEMS include proof of the primary medical qualification, Indian Embassy attestation or apostille of the qualification, proof of citizenship, and an Eligibility Certificate or admission/NEET documentation where applicable.
• An admit card does not finally establish eligibility: NBEMS describes eligibility as provisional and may cancel candidature if ineligibility is found later.

In the June 2026 format, FMGE consisted of one computer-based paper with 300 multiple-choice questions in English, each with four response options. The test was delivered in two parts on the same day, with 150 questions to be attempted in 150 minutes in each part and a scheduled break between them.

The paper may be divided into time-bound sections. Once a section’s allotted time ends, candidates cannot revisit or change answers in that section. There is no negative marking.

FMGE is pass/fail. A minimum score of 150 out of 300 is required to qualify. NBEMS does not publish marks for the individual parts and does not provide re-evaluation, re-totaling, or grace marks.

NBEMS accepts FMGE applications online through its official website; applications submitted through another method are rejected. In the June 2026 cycle, the application window ran from 21 April 2026 to 11 May 2026, followed by edit and document-deficiency windows. These dates have passed and are session-specific, so candidates should rely on the notice and information bulletin published for the next available session.

The application workflow described by NBEMS is: create a user/application ID and password; complete the online form; upload the photograph, signature, thumb impression, and prescribed eligibility documents; choose the test city; pay the examination fee through the available payment gateway; accept the declaration; submit; and retain the completed application with a successful-payment status.

For June 2026, NBEMS listed a total payable fee of ₹6,195 including GST but excluding applicable gateway charges. It also stated that submitted fees are generally neither refundable nor transferable to a future examination. This is dated fee context, not a promise of the fee for a future session.

• Before paying, verify eligibility against the current session bulletin and the regulations applicable to the date of admission to the foreign medical course.
• Watch for any edit window and any deadline for curing deficiencies in images or documents.
• Use only NBEMS’s official FMGE page and notices for application links, deadlines, and corrigenda.

Begin with the official FMGE syllabus and examination blueprint included in the current information bulletin. Because the June 2026 examination used 300 English-language MCQs under a computer-based, time-bound format, preparation should combine full coverage of the prescribed subjects with timed computer-based question practice.

Plan practice around the operational constraints stated by NBEMS: two 150-question parts, 150 minutes per part, and potentially time-restricted sections that cannot be revisited after time expires. Use mock sessions to practise pacing, decisive answer selection, and reviewing questions only within the active section.

The official bulletin is the authoritative source for the session’s blueprint, application rules, test-day procedures, and result policy. Commercial coaching material may be supplementary but should be checked against the latest NBEMS bulletin rather than treated as the governing syllabus.

• Prioritise weak areas identified by timed mocks while maintaining coverage across the official blueprint.

NBEMS declares FMGE results as Pass or Fail. In the June 2026 session, NBEMS scheduled the result by 28 July 2026 but declared it earlier, on 7 July 2026. The result date for any future session is variable and should be verified through the official FMGE notice board.

After a candidate is declared qualified, NBEMS issues the Screening Test Pass Certificate after in-person verification of the biometric/Face ID captured during the examination and the prescribed documents. NBEMS then provides results to NMC and State Medical Councils.

A candidate seeking to practise should separately follow the registration process and any other conditions applied by the relevant medical council. NMC’s foreign-medical-graduate regulations and notices distinguish between cohorts based on, among other factors, the date of admission to foreign medical education; applicants should obtain current guidance from the competent council rather than assume that a pass certificate by itself completes registration.
