Quick facts
- Conducting body
- CMA Intermediate is administered by The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), a statutory professional body established under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959 for regulation of the cost and management accountancy profession.
- Entry routes
- A candidate may register after 10+2 plus ICMAI Foundation/CAT Foundation Part I, or through direct-entry qualifications such as a recognized university degree (with specified exclusions), qualifying engineering status, or other listed qualifying examinations. Degree-result-awaiting candidates may seek provisional registration.
- Current syllabus structure
- Under ICMAI Syllabus 2022, Intermediate has two groups and eight papers: four papers in Group I and four in Group II.
What CMA Intermediate is for
CMA Intermediate is ICMAI’s second academic examination level in the CMA pathway. It builds technical capability in financial accounting, taxation, cost accounting, management accounting, corporate accounting and auditing, financial management, business data analytics, business laws, operations management and strategy. ICMAI is the statutory body responsible for examining candidates and regulating student training in this profession.

- The course is designed as preparation for progression to CMA Final after qualifying both Intermediate groups.
- It combines examination papers with required skills training and access to practical-training pathways.
- It is particularly aligned with cost and management accounting work: cost analysis, financial and management accounting, compliance, audit-related work, reporting and business decision support.
Who can register
ICMAI lists multiple entry routes to Intermediate. The standard route is Senior Secondary/Higher Secondary (10+2) together with ICMAI Foundation. Direct registration is available to candidates with a degree from a recognized university, subject to ICMAI’s exclusions for certain fine-arts/performance disciplines, and to certain other specified categories such as qualified engineers and eligible engineering students. ICMAI also permits provisional registration for candidates awaiting degree results, who must convert to regular status within the period specified by the Institute.

- 10+2 plus ICMAI Foundation is an entry route.
- A recognized degree can provide direct entry, subject to ICMAI’s stated conditions and exclusions.
- Candidates should check ICMAI’s current qualifying-examination annexure and provisional-registration conditions before applying, because admission rules can be revised.
Exam format and subjects
Syllabus 2022 divides CMA Intermediate into two groups of four papers. Group I covers Business Laws and Ethics, Financial Accounting, Direct and Indirect Taxation, and Cost Accounting. Group II covers Operations Management and Strategic Management, Corporate Accounting and Auditing, Financial Management and Business Data Analytics, and Management Accounting.
For the June 2026 term, ICMAI scheduled the eight Intermediate papers on June 11–18, 2026, in a 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. IST slot, and specified an offline, centre-based examination mode. This is a dated timetable, not a guarantee of the mode, timings, centres, or dates for future terms.

- Group I: Papers 5–8.
- Group II: Papers 9–12.
- For a candidate taking both groups, ICMAI’s published Syllabus 2022 rule requires at least 40% in every paper appeared and at least 50% aggregate across both groups to qualify the course.
Registration and examination application
The process has two distinct stages: register for the Intermediate course, then submit an examination application for a particular term when eligible. ICMAI’s prospectus says registration should be completed at least four months before an examination starts. To be admitted to the Intermediate examination, a student needs a valid registration number, completion of prescribed Intermediate training, no debarment, and a timely examination form with the fee set by the Council.
The 2025 ICMAI prospectus listed Intermediate course fees of ₹23,100, or an instalment option of ₹12,000 at registration plus ₹11,100 later. Separately, the June 2026 exam notice listed ₹1,500 for one group and ₹2,800 for both groups at inland centres. These are published historical/term-specific amounts; applicants should treat fees, cut-offs, payment modes, and late fees as variable and confirm them in the current ICMAI notification.

- Create or use the ICMAI student-portal account and submit the course-registration documents required for the applicable entry route.
- Complete the prescribed training and pay any required course instalment before filing the exam form.
- Use the official Examination and Student Circulars pages to confirm the next term’s registration cut-off, exam-form window, centre availability, fee, and instructions.
How to prepare using ICMAI resources
Begin with the Syllabus 2022 study material and make a separate plan for each group and paper. ICMAI publishes Intermediate study materials, workbooks, MCQ banks, postal test papers, practice test papers, model question papers, and past examination question papers. These official resources are particularly useful for matching preparation to the Institute’s current paper names and syllabus.
Training is part of readiness, not merely an add-on. The published Intermediate Skills Training programme totals 120 hours and includes ERP exposure, communication and soft skills, office/productivity tools, and e-filing. ICMAI states that the Skills Training assessment must be completed before a student can appear for either/both groups or a remaining group.

- Study paper-by-paper, then use full-group revision to practise integrating related accounting, tax, costing and management-accounting concepts.
- Attempt official model, practice, and prior-term question papers under timed conditions.
- Track ICMAI supplementary material and term-specific clarifications, especially for law, taxation, cost-accounting standards, and other update-sensitive content.
What it can lead to
The direct academic outcome of qualifying both CMA Intermediate groups is eligibility to enrol in ICMAI Final. ICMAI’s training scheme also allows practical training to start from Intermediate level; the published scheme describes 15 months of practical training in recognized accounting, finance, audit, compliance and related areas, with the full training requirement linked to Final-examination eligibility.
Before full CMA qualification, Intermediate students and pass-outs may be considered for trainee and entry-level finance/accounting opportunities. ICMAI’s placement updates in 2026 included invitations directed at CMA Intermediate candidates or CMA Intermediate-qualified candidates. Actual job title, employer requirements, location, work experience, compensation, and selection outcome vary; ICMAI Intermediate alone does not confer CMA membership.

- Immediate next educational step: qualify both groups and enrol for CMA Final.
- Practical exposure can begin through ICMAI-recognized practical training in areas such as management accounting, cost accounting, financial accounting, financial management, auditing and regulatory compliance.
- Possible early-career directions include accounting, accounts operations, audit support, tax support and cost-accounting trainee work, subject to each employer’s requirements.
