Quick facts

Conducting body
The CA Final examination is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) as the Final Course examination under ICAI’s New Scheme of Education and Training.
Current exam frequency
As of the 2026 change effective from the May 2026 examination, ICAI conducts CA Final twice yearly, in May and November. This superseded the earlier January/May/September schedule.
Papers and groups
CA Final has six 100-mark papers across two groups: Group I—Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, and Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics; Group II—Direct Tax Laws & International Taxation, Indirect Tax Laws, and Integrated Business Solutions.
Examination eligibility
Under the current FAQ guidance, a student must be registered for Final, have completed practical training six months before the first day of the examination month, have completed Advanced ICITSS, and have qualified all four Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM) to appear.
Assessment and pass rule
All six papers use 30% case-scenario/case-study MCQs and 70% descriptive questions; Paper 6 is an open-book, entirely case-study-based paper, while the other five are closed book. A candidate ordinarily needs at least 40% in each paper and 50% aggregate in each group, or 50% aggregate across both groups when appearing together.
Indicative Final registration fee
ICAI’s student FAQ states a ₹22,000 registration fee for both groups of the Final Course. This is dated fee guidance (FAQ last updated September 27, 2024) and applicants should verify the current amount in ICAI’s registration materials before payment.

What CA Final is for

CA Final is the final examination stage in ICAI’s Chartered Accountancy education pathway. ICAI’s New Scheme retains the three-tier Foundation–Intermediate–Final structure, with Final comprising six examination papers and four SPOM sets. Passing Final is a key requirement on the route to becoming an ICAI member; practical training and the Institute’s membership process remain separate requirements.

  • It tests advanced financial reporting, finance, audit and professional ethics, direct and indirect tax, and multidisciplinary business problem-solving.
  • The New Scheme also requires SPOMs in corporate and economic laws, strategic cost and performance management, one elective, and one multidisciplinary subject.

Who can take CA Final

Students may register for the Final Course after passing both groups of the Intermediate Examination. For examination admission under ICAI’s New Scheme, ICAI’s FAQ specifies Final registration, completion of practical training six months before the first day of the examination month, successful completion of Advanced ICITSS, and qualification in all four SPOMs. Requirements can differ for transitional/earlier-scheme candidates, so candidates should use the session-specific ICAI notice and their own scheme status.

  • Final Course registration follows passing both Intermediate groups.
  • Advanced ICITSS must be completed after practical training and before appearing in Final, according to ICAI’s FAQ guidance.
  • SPOM comprises Sets A, B, C, and D; Sets A and B are mandatory, while the student selects one paper each from Sets C and D.

Exam structure and scoring

The current Final syllabus has two groups of three papers each. Each listed paper carries 100 marks. ICAI states that all six papers contain 30% case-scenario/case-study MCQs and 70% descriptive questions, with no negative marking for the MCQ component. Paper 6, Integrated Business Solutions, is fully case-study based and assessed as an open-book examination; the other five papers are closed book.

  • Group I: Financial Reporting; Advanced Financial Management; Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics.
  • Group II: Direct Tax Laws & International Taxation; Indirect Tax Laws; Integrated Business Solutions (Multidisciplinary Case Study with Strategic Management).
  • Candidates may take one group or both together. Ordinarily, passing a group requires at least 40% in every paper and 50% aggregate in that group; the regulations also allow a both-groups aggregate route when both groups are taken together.

Registration and examination application

The process has two distinct stages: register in ICAI’s Final Course after passing both Intermediate groups, then apply for a particular examination session once all applicable eligibility conditions are met. Final registration also registers the student for SPOM. Because application windows, examination dates, centres, fees, and document instructions are session-specific and can change, candidates should rely on the current ICAI Examination announcements rather than a past deadline.

  • Register for the Final Course and order/use the applicable ICAI study material.
  • Complete practical training, Advanced ICITSS, and all four SPOM qualifications by ICAI’s applicable eligibility cut-offs.
  • Monitor ICAI’s Examination Students page for the current May or November Final examination form and instructions.

Preparation using ICAI materials

Use ICAI’s official Final Course study material as the primary syllabus reference and check the material, statutory updates, corrigenda, model test papers, and applicable pronouncements for the intended attempt. This matters particularly in tax and law papers, where ICAI publishes attempt-specific updates. ICAI also provides digital SPOM learning and has offered official live/revision learning resources through its Board of Studies.

  • Plan paper-wise preparation around the six-paper syllabus and practise the required mix of case-based MCQs and descriptive answers.
  • Prepare Paper 6 with case-study and open-book exam practice rather than treating it like a conventional closed-book theory paper.
  • Complete SPOM learning and assessments early enough to avoid an eligibility bottleneck.

What passing leads to

A candidate passes CA Final by passing both groups under ICAI’s prescribed marks rules. Passing Final is not by itself the same as ICAI membership: the Chartered Accountancy pathway also requires completion of prescribed practical training and enrolment as an ICAI member. ICAI publishes results and marks through its examination systems after each session; pass rates vary substantially by attempt and should be treated as historical context, not a forecast.

source_urls

  • The January 2026 Final result illustrates variability: ICAI reported pass rates of 21.03% in Group I, 9.76% in Group II, and 10.97% for candidates appearing in both groups.
  • After meeting all professional requirements, eligible candidates can pursue ICAI membership and use the Chartered Accountant designation in accordance with ICAI rules.
