AILET

AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is NLU Delhi’s own national-level entrance examination. For undergraduate applicants, it is used for admission to the University’s five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme rather than CLAT or LSAT. The test also has a separate postgraduate LL.M. route, but the undergraduate route is the relevant pathway for Class 12-level law aspirants.

• The successful AILET route leads to National Law University Delhi, Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi.
• For the 2026 cycle, the University listed 110 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) seats on AILET merit; this figure is cycle-specific and may change in a later admission notification.

For AILET 2026, NLU Delhi required applicants to have passed the Senior Secondary School Examination (10+2 system) or an equivalent examination with at least 45% marks. The stated thresholds were 42% for OBC applicants and 40% for SC/ST applicants. The same notice allowed candidates appearing in the relevant Class 12 annual examination to apply. NLU Delhi’s FAQ for that cycle also stated that there was no minimum or maximum age limit.

• Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO applicants applying in those categories were exempt from AILET in the 2026 notice, but had separate qualifying-mark requirements and a direct-admission-on-merit route.
• Eligibility, reservation documentation, and category rules should be checked against the official notification for the particular admission year.

In the completed AILET 2026 cycle, the UG examination was a two-hour, offline OMR-based paper containing 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks. Its sections were English Language (50 questions), Current Affairs and General Knowledge (30), and Logical Reasoning (70). NLU Delhi stated that logical-reasoning questions may use legal principles to test aptitude, but that no legal knowledge or technical legal understanding was required.

• Negative marking in 2026 was 0.25 mark for each wrong answer.
• For a marks tie in 2026, higher Logical Reasoning marks were considered first, followed by seniority in age and then a computerized draw of lots if necessary.
• The structure, marking, mode, and tie-break rules are admission-cycle-specific; confirm them in the current official scheme.

NLU Delhi required online application through its AILET portal. For AILET 2026, applications opened on August 7, 2025 and the stated closing date was November 10, 2025; the examination was held on December 14, 2025. These are historical dates for the 2026 cycle, not a forecast of future deadlines.

• Applicants could make up to three test-city preferences; NLU Delhi said that allocation was subject to administrative and technical constraints and that a city with fewer than 100 candidates might not receive a test centre.
• The 2026 FAQ said hard copies of the application or documents did not need to be sent at the application stage, except that eligible BPL applicants had to provide the specified BPL certificate; original category and admission documents were to be produced during provisional admission and verification.
• Applicants should rely on the official NLU Delhi AILET portal and notification for the live application window, document list, payment methods, and counselling timetable.

A sound preparation plan should be built directly around NLU Delhi’s published UG scheme: English Language, Current Affairs and General Knowledge, and Logical Reasoning. Because the 2026 scheme assigned 70 of 150 questions to Logical Reasoning and applied negative marking, candidates should practise both section-specific accuracy and timed decision-making rather than treating all attempted questions as equally valuable.

• Use NLU Delhi’s official syllabus and the University-linked prior-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) question papers to become familiar with the stated test design.
• Do not assume prior-year patterns are permanent: legal principles may appear within Logical Reasoning, but NLU Delhi said that the 2026 examination did not require legal knowledge or technical understanding.
• Practise completing 150 MCQs within the official two-hour benchmark while accounting for the published negative-marking rule.

AILET performance is used to create merit for NLU Delhi admission. In the 2026 cycle, NLU Delhi announced results on December 18, 2025 and invited candidates for online counselling based on AILET merit, at approximately three invitees per available seat in each category. Being invited to counselling did not itself guarantee admission; candidates had to complete the prescribed registration and payment steps.
