Quick facts

What the title means
“PGP in Management” is the traditional flagship-programme name used by several IIMs. At IIM Bangalore, the PGP is explicitly a master’s-level programme that grants the MBA degree; applicants should verify the award named in the current prospectus of the specific institute, rather than assuming every programme called PGP is a diploma.
Typical format
A flagship PGP/MBA is commonly a two-year, full-time residential programme. IIM Bangalore describes its PGP as six trimesters over two years, with a summer project between the academic years.
Entry qualification
For IIM Bangalore’s 2026–28 domestic PGP/MBA intake, applicants need a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks/equivalent CGPA; the stated minimum is 45% for SC, ST and PwD applicants. Institute-specific rules and category requirements apply.
Admissions tests
CAT is the usual domestic route for flagship two-year IIM PGP/MBA programmes. GMAT and, at some institutes/routes, GRE may be accepted for overseas or international applicants; these are not interchangeable universal routes for every applicant or IIM.
Curriculum pattern
The typical structure is a compulsory management core in year one, a summer internship or project, and a more elective-led second year. Areas commonly include finance, marketing, operations, economics, strategy, organisational behaviour and decision sciences.
Costs (variable, dated example)
Costs are institute- and batch-specific. As a published example, IIM Ahmedabad lists a total programme fee of INR 27,50,000 for its PGP 2025–27 batch, including stated tuition of INR 20,10,000; this should not be treated as the fee for later batches or other IIMs.

Eligibility

Eligibility is set by each institute and admission cycle. A representative current policy is IIM Bangalore’s PGP/MBA 2026–28 domestic process: a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, and a valid CAT score at application; the minimum academic threshold is 45% for SC, ST and PwD applicants.

Final-year students can be eligible subject to institute conditions and proof of completion. For example, IIM Ahmedabad’s 2026–28 policy requires provisionally admitted final-year candidates to submit their final bachelor’s marksheet and degree certificate for examinations held on or before June 30, 2026. Applicants should use the policy for their target batch, because cut-offs, documentation, reservations and completion deadlines can change.

  • A management, commerce, engineering, arts, science or other bachelor’s background may be eligible; a prior business degree is generally not required in the cited IIM policies.
  • Work experience is useful in evaluation at some schools but is not a universal entry requirement for the standard two-year flagship programme.
  • International and overseas-Indian definitions are institute-specific. IIM Bangalore, for example, uses a separate international channel and requires a valid GMAT or GRE score for that route.

Duration and study mode

The canonical flagship PGP in Management is normally a two-year, full-time residential management programme. IIM Bangalore describes six trimesters spread across two years, with a summer project in between; IIM Ahmedabad likewise identifies its PGP as a two-year full-time flagship MBA programme.

This node should not be conflated with one-year executive MBAs, blended programmes, specialised PGPs, or PGDM courses at non-IIM institutions. Those programmes can have different work-experience requirements, admissions tests, delivery modes and credentials.

  • Full-time residential study is the standard format in the cited flagship IIM examples.
  • The academic calendar is generally organised into terms, not necessarily semesters.
  • A summer internship/project commonly separates first- and second-year academic work.

Curriculum

The programme generally starts with a broad compulsory core before allowing more individual specialisation. IIM Bangalore states that first-year core courses are compulsory and that electives begin in the third term and continue through year two. Its listed core areas include accounting, corporate finance, marketing, managerial economics, operations, organisational design, decision sciences, strategy, ethics and digital business.

The second year is primarily elective-driven. IIM Bangalore requires students to earn elective credits across the three second-year terms, while IIM Calcutta describes its MBA structure as a core curriculum, compulsory summer industry training and second-year electives. Teaching methods may include lectures, cases, discussions, industry interaction, projects, simulations and experiential learning.

  • Core foundations: accounting/finance, economics, marketing, operations, strategy, people and organisations, and quantitative or decision methods.
  • Applied component: a summer internship or project between academic years is standard in the cited structures; IIM Bangalore notes a limited work-experience-based internship exception.
  • Customisation: elective availability, exchange options, projects and concentrations differ by institute and by year.

Admission process and test routes

For domestic candidates, CAT is the principal route to the standard two-year flagship IIM PGP/MBA. Meeting an institute’s published minimum CAT thresholds does not itself secure an interview or admission: institutes can use sectional and overall performance, academic record, written assessment, personal interview, work experience and other stated criteria.

At IIM Ahmedabad, domestic PGP 2026–28 applicants are shortlisted from candidates with valid CAT 2025 scores who apply and meet eligibility requirements, then evaluated through an Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview. Its final selection policy also considers CAT, AWT/PI, academic, co-curricular/extracurricular achievements and work experience.

GMAT and GRE routes are conditional, not a substitute for CAT in every domestic application. IIM Ahmedabad identifies GMAT for overseas Indian applicants or foreign nationals, while IIM Bangalore’s international route accepts valid GMAT or GRE scores. Applicants should determine their applicant category first, then follow only the target institute’s current admissions policy and deadline.

  • 1. Register for and take the required test for the applicable route, usually CAT for domestic flagship PGP/MBA admission.
  • 2. Apply to each institute as required; CAT registration alone may not complete every institute-specific requirement.
  • 3. Satisfy shortlisting conditions and complete required assessments, commonly a written assessment and/or personal interview.
  • 4. Check current rules for category certificates, transcripts, final-year completion evidence, passport/residency status and test-score validity.

Fees and financing

There is no single national PGP fee. Tuition and included charges vary by IIM, cohort, applicant category and living arrangements; quoted fees may include some combination of tuition, course materials, hostel, insurance, taxes, deposits or student services. Compare the exact fee table and exclusions published for the intended batch.

As dated context, IIM Ahmedabad’s published fee for the PGP 2025–27 batch is INR 27,50,000, including tuition of INR 20,10,000. IIM Bangalore’s published international PGP 2024–26 fee table showed INR 26,00,000 for two years plus separate deposits and mess advances. These examples are not forecasts or universal benchmarks and may be revised before a future admission cycle.

Before accepting an offer, budget separately for application/test fees, travel, personal living costs, laptop and other supplies, and any non-included mess or accommodation charges. Institutes may provide information about loans, but applicants should confirm loan eligibility, interest rates and terms directly with lenders.

  • Use only the target institute’s official batch-specific fee notice for a decision.
  • Check what is included, especially hostel, mess, insurance, taxes, deposits and exchange/international costs.
  • Treat all fee and financing information as time-sensitive.

What it can lead to

A PGP/MBA is designed for entry into or transition across management careers rather than licensing a single regulated profession. The institute’s curriculum, summer internship, electives, projects and placement/career processes help students explore functional paths such as finance, marketing, operations, strategy, consulting, product roles, analytics, general management and entrepreneurship; actual outcomes depend on the student, institute, labour market and recruiting cycle.

Further study is also possible, including doctoral management programmes, but doctorate entry requirements are set separately. For example, IIM Bangalore’s doctoral programme has a five-year structure comprising coursework and thesis research, with its own admissions requirements and selection process.

  • Pursue full-time recruiting and internship conversion opportunities through the institute’s formal career processes.
  • Use second-year electives, live projects, exchanges and field work to test or deepen a target management function.
  • Consider doctoral research only after checking the separate programme’s eligibility, test and research-fit requirements.
