Quick facts
- Regulatory framework
- Indian Ph.D. programmes are governed at the national minimum-standard level by the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, which apply to universities, colleges and institutions deemed to be universities covered by the UGC Act.
- Standard entry routes
- For this social-sciences doctoral node, the usual route from an MA or MSW is a qualifying master's degree with at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade; the Regulations also permit entry after a four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75%, subject to the institution's admission rules. UGC provides a 5-percentage-point relaxation for specified reserved and disability/EWS categories as decided by the Commission.
- Programme length
- The UGC minimum duration is three years including coursework, with a normal maximum of six years from admission. An HEI may allow re-registration up to a total of eight years; female scholars and persons with disabilities above 40% may receive further relaxation, up to a total of ten years.
Eligibility after MA or MSW
An MA or MSW is an appropriate immediate prior qualification where it is a recognised master's-level award and meets the UGC minimum of 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade. The proposed research discipline, departmental fit and any subject-specific requirements remain institution-specific: a Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Public Administration or interdisciplinary social-sciences department may require a relevant or allied master's background.
The national regulations also allow a direct route after a four-year/ eight-semester bachelor's degree with at least 75% aggregate marks or equivalent grade. This means a master's degree is the common route represented by this node's parents, but it is not the only legally permitted entry route. Category-based mark relaxations apply as prescribed by UGC.
Applicants should verify the current prospectus of each HEI because the institution must publish the available discipline-wise seats, admission criteria and procedure in advance. A current programme-specific prospectus can impose additional requirements; for example, JNU's 2025–26 Ph.D. prospectus paired stated academic qualifications with a relevant/allied UGC/CSIR-NET result for the programmes covered by that prospectus.
- Prepare degree and mark records, category/disability documentation where applicable, a research proposal, and evidence required by the particular university or department.
- Do not assume that an MA/MSW in any subject automatically qualifies an applicant for every social-science department; check the department's definition of relevant or allied disciplines.
Duration and registration limits
The doctoral programme has a UGC minimum duration of three years, including coursework. The ordinary upper limit is six years from the admission date, rather than three years from completion of coursework.
Subject to the institution's statute or ordinance, re-registration can extend completion to eight years. Female Ph.D. scholars and persons with disabilities above 40% may receive an additional relaxation of up to two years, with a total cap of ten years; female scholars may also be provided maternity/child-care leave of up to 240 days over the programme.
- Treat these as national ceilings and minimums: departmental calendars, residence requirements, progress reviews and thesis procedures can affect an individual's actual timeline.
- Confirm part-time, leave, employment and re-registration rules in the university's current ordinance before enrolling.
Research training, supervision and thesis
A social-sciences Ph.D. is primarily a supervised original-research programme rather than a taught degree. National minimum coursework is 12 credits, including research methodology and Research and Publication Ethics; the Research Advisory Committee may identify additional courses and may recommend UGC-recognised online courses as part of the credit requirement.
Each scholar has a Research Advisory Committee led by the supervisor. It reviews the proposal and research topic, guides study design and methodology, and reviews progress. Scholars present progress and submit a brief report to the committee each semester.
After satisfactory coursework, the scholar undertakes research and develops a dissertation/thesis. Before submission, the scholar makes a presentation; the institution must use plagiarism-detection systems, and the submitted thesis is evaluated by the supervisor and at least two external subject experts. A University of Delhi Sociology example describes departmental research governance, compulsory colloquium/seminar participation, and a thesis expected to contribute new facts or a fresh interpretation.
- Typical social-science proposal elements include a research objective, literature review, methodology, fieldwork or data plan, timetable and references.
- Research content varies by discipline and topic: it can include qualitative, quantitative, historical, policy, ethnographic, mixed-methods or interdisciplinary approaches, subject to supervisor and departmental approval.
Admission process
Under the UGC Regulations, an HEI may admit candidates holding a fellowship or scholarship through UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR-NET, GATE, CEED or similar national-level tests on the basis of an interview, and/or it may conduct its own entrance test. Where the HEI conducts the entrance test, its syllabus must be 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific; candidates with 50% in that test may be called for interview, with the specified 5% relaxation for eligible categories.
For admissions selected through an HEI entrance test, the prescribed weighting is 70% entrance-test performance and 30% interview/viva-voce performance. The university must publish its seat count, discipline-wise allocation, eligibility and procedure in its prospectus, and follow the applicable national or state reservation policy. Therefore, applicants should use the university's current cycle notice rather than relying on an old admission calendar or a generic coaching-site rule.
- Shortlist departments by research fit, available supervisors and advertised seats.
- Read the current prospectus for whether a national test score, a university test, an interview, a written proposal, or a combination is required.
- Check the institution's published supervisor list and current scholar load where available; UGC requires HEIs to keep this information updated annually.
