Quick facts

Regulatory basis
In India, Ph.D. programmes are governed by the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, which apply to universities, colleges and institutions deemed to be universities covered by the UGC Act.
Usual entry qualification
An M.Com is a directly relevant route: the UGC baseline permits a qualifying master's degree with at least 55% aggregate marks or equivalent grade, subject to the institution’s notified requirements; AMU’s Commerce department specifically lists M.Com or equivalent with 55%.
Minimum and maximum duration
The UGC baseline is 3 years including coursework and 6 years from admission. An HEI may allow up to 2 additional years through re-registration under its ordinance; specified additional relaxations apply to female scholars and persons with disabilities.
Admission route
HEIs may admit through an eligible national fellowship/scholarship test followed by interview and/or through their own entrance test. For an HEI entrance test, the UGC framework specifies 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific content, with 70% entrance-test and 30% interview/viva weightage for that selection route.
Coursework and thesis
Ph.D. coursework has a UGC minimum of 12 credits, including research methodology and Research and Publication Ethics; scholars need at least 55% or equivalent in coursework to proceed to thesis submission.
Mode of study
Part-time Ph.D. study is permitted when UGC conditions are met, including an employer NOC where applicable. Ph.D. programmes may not be conducted through distance or online mode.

Eligibility after M.Com

For the canonical M.Com-to-Ph.D. pathway, the national baseline is a qualifying master's degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate, or an equivalent grade. The UGC permits a 5% relaxation, or equivalent grade relaxation, for SC, ST, OBC non-creamy-layer, Differently-Abled, EWS and other categories as decided by the Commission from time to time. Each university can apply additional discipline, equivalence, seat and document requirements in its admission notice.

A Commerce-specific example is Aligarh Muslim University’s Department of Commerce, which states M.Com or equivalent with a minimum of 55% aggregate or equivalent UGC grade as its course requirement. Applicants should therefore check both the UGC baseline and the exact prospectus of the department to which they apply.

  • M.Com is an appropriate immediate predecessor, but it does not itself guarantee admission.
  • A four-year bachelor’s degree route and an M.Phil route also exist under the UGC framework; they are alternatives rather than requirements for an M.Com graduate.
  • Confirm subject equivalence, category documentation, supervisor availability and the university’s current seat notification before applying.

Duration and study mode

Under the UGC 2022 Regulations, a Ph.D. has a minimum duration of three years, including coursework, and a normal maximum duration of six years from admission. Subject to the university’s statute or ordinance, re-registration can add up to two years; the overall ceiling is ordinarily eight years. The regulations provide additional time provisions for female scholars and persons with disabilities, and up to 240 days of maternity/child-care leave for female Ph.D. scholars during the programme.

A Commerce Ph.D. may be undertaken full time or part time where the university offers that mode. For employed part-time candidates, the institution must obtain an employer NOC confirming permission to study, adequate time for research and, if needed, release for coursework. A doctoral degree cannot be delivered through distance or online mode under these regulations.

  • Plan on a multi-year research commitment rather than a fixed taught-course timetable.
  • The actual registration, coursework, thesis-submission and extension rules are university-specific within the UGC framework.
  • Verify part-time availability directly with the admitting university; it is not automatic at every Commerce department.

What the programme involves

A Ph.D. in Commerce is primarily a supervised original-research programme rather than a sequence of broad M.Com-style papers. The UGC requires at least 12 coursework credits, including research methodology and Research and Publication Ethics. The Research Advisory Committee reviews and finalizes the proposal, helps shape study design and methodology, identifies any additional courses, and reviews progress each semester.

Commerce departments determine their own subject-specific preparation and research areas. For example, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya’s Ph.D. Commerce coursework lists research methodology, review of published research, computer application, an advanced course in the research subject, research and publication ethics, and a comprehensive viva. The final degree process includes coursework completion, original thesis preparation, plagiarism checks, external evaluation and a thesis-defense viva voce.

  • Typical research domains can include accounting, finance, taxation, banking, corporate regulation, marketing, international business, entrepreneurship and related commerce questions, depending on departmental faculty and approved supervision.
  • Scholars must obtain at least 55% or the equivalent grade in coursework before continuing to thesis submission.
  • The UGC framework also requires training in teaching, education, pedagogy or writing related to the chosen doctoral subject; scholars may be assigned teaching or research assistantship work.

Admissions: tests, interviews and choosing a department

Admission is competitive and seat-bound. An HEI may admit candidates holding qualifying fellowships or scholarships from UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED or similar national-level tests through interview, and/or through its own entrance examination. Where an HEI entrance test is used, its syllabus must be split equally between research methodology and the subject; candidates scoring 50% are eligible to be called for interview, with a 5% entrance-mark relaxation for specified reserved categories. For selection through the HEI test, the prescribed weighting is 70% test and 30% interview/viva voce.

The university must publish a prospectus in advance stating available seats, discipline-wise distribution, admission criteria and procedures, and it must follow the applicable national or state reservation policy. Current department practice can differ: Kurukshetra University’s Commerce department, for example, lists admission based on valid NET/GATE/GPAT and specifies an order of preference among qualifying categories. Always use the relevant university’s current doctoral notice rather than relying on an old prospectus or a general admissions website.

  • Shortlist departments by faculty supervision fit, active research areas, library/data access, part-time policy and available seats.
  • Prepare a focused research proposal, academic records, category certificates where applicable, and test/fellowship evidence required by the university.
  • Check whether the department requires a separate research proposal presentation, departmental test, interview, employer NOC or other documents.

After the Ph.D.

The principal outcome is the capability to undertake and defend original Commerce research. The UGC requires thesis evaluation by the supervisor and at least two external subject experts, followed—when the required recommendations are obtained—by an open viva voce defense. This makes the degree a foundation for research-intensive academic and institutional roles, but employment eligibility and selection remain subject to the recruiting institution’s current rules.

A Commerce department’s own stated prospects illustrate the common academic direction: AMU identifies academic positions in institutions and universities and roles in research-and-development organisations. A graduate can also pursue postdoctoral research, research projects, scholarly publication, research administration or specialized analytical work aligned with the thesis area; the fit depends on the person’s research record, skills and the particular employer rather than the degree title alone.

  • For academic careers, check the recruiting institution’s current qualification, publication, experience and selection requirements.
  • Keep research outputs, methods skills, datasets, software capability and teaching experience documented alongside the Ph.D. credential.
  • Consider postdoctoral or project-based research where it strengthens the intended specialty—such as accounting, taxation, finance or business policy.
