Quick facts

What this degree is
An overseas MPH/MSc Public Health is a postgraduate, population-health degree; exact title, entry profile, delivery mode and professional outcomes vary substantially by university and country.
Entry profile
A prior bachelor’s degree is common, but experience requirements differ: LSHTM considers an appropriate first degree (and may consider a 2:2 with typically at least two years’ relevant experience), while Johns Hopkins’ MPH generally requires two years of post-baccalaureate health-related experience or an accepted alternative.
English language evidence
For applicants whose first language is not English, universities may require an approved English-language qualification. LSHTM lists Band B English requirements and permits an application without results, with a test result potentially made a condition of an offer; IELTS is therefore a common pathway but not a universal or automatically sufficient requirement.
Typical academic content
MPH curricula commonly combine epidemiology, biostatistics/quantitative methods, health policy and management, social and behavioural determinants, electives, and applied work. For example, Johns Hopkins requires 80 credits, a practicum of at least 100 hours and a capstone.
Cost context
Fees and total living costs are location- and institution-specific and change by intake. For 2026/27, LSHTM lists overseas full-time MSc Public Health tuition of £31,450; this is an example rather than a market-wide benchmark and excludes personal living and travel costs.

Eligibility and fit

An overseas public-health master’s can suit graduates from health, life sciences, social sciences, management and related disciplines, but there is no single international eligibility rule. Applicants should compare the specific programme’s academic-equivalence standard, quantitative preparation, work-experience expectation and English-language policy rather than assuming that any Indian bachelor’s degree automatically meets entry requirements.

LSHTM’s 2026/27 MSc Public Health, for example, accepts a relevant first degree at UK upper-second-class (2:1) standard or an overseas equivalent; it may consider a 2:2 with sufficient relevant training or experience, typically at least two years in a field allied to public health. It also asks applicants to demonstrate post-16 mathematics ability, such as statistics, quantitative methods or epidemiology. In contrast, Johns Hopkins’ MPH normally expects two years of full-time, post-baccalaureate health-related experience (or specified alternatives) and has course prerequisites that include mathematics and health-related science for June 2027 entry onward.

For IELTS-linked planning, treat English testing as an admission-document requirement, not as the degree’s only prerequisite. At LSHTM, applicants who do not have English as a first language must meet its Band B requirement unless exempt; an application may be submitted before results are available, but an offer can be conditional on them. Confirm accepted tests, minimum component scores, validity period and exemption rules directly with each university before booking a test.

  • Build evidence of quantitative readiness: transcript modules in statistics, mathematics, research methods, epidemiology or a recognised preparatory course where the programme permits it.
  • Document public-health relevance clearly in the CV and statement: clinical service, research, NGO work, government programmes, hospital quality work, analytics, internships and volunteering may be relevant depending on the university.
  • Obtain a formal assessment only where the university asks for one; universities make their own decisions on whether an Indian qualification is equivalent.

Duration and study format

Programme length is not standardised. Intensive, campus-based programmes can be completed in about one academic year, while part-time, hybrid and online routes can take longer. Johns Hopkins states that its full-time MPH runs July to May and can be completed in 11 months; its broader MPH options allow completion from as little as 11 months to up to four years. Students should distinguish an on-campus degree, a blended degree and a fully online degree before assessing visa needs or post-study work options.

The degree title also varies. UK institutions may use MSc Public Health rather than MPH, while both can be postgraduate public-health qualifications. LSHTM lists its MSc Public Health as an intensive in-person master’s programme and separately lists a distance-learning MSc Public Health option.

  • Check whether placements, orientation sessions, examinations and capstone presentations require in-country attendance.
  • Plan for an intake-specific academic calendar; duration can change with credit load, leave, placement timing and approved part-time study.
  • Do not assume a distance-learning programme supports a student-visa or post-study-work pathway; confirm this with the destination-country immigration authority and university.

What you study

A strong public-health master’s is interdisciplinary rather than confined to clinical medicine. At Johns Hopkins, the MPH core is designed around public-health knowledge and competencies spanning biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioural determinants, management sciences, public-health problem-solving, demography, environmental health, biological sciences and public-health policy. The remaining coursework can be tailored to career interests through electives and concentrations.

Applied learning is material when comparing programmes. The Johns Hopkins MPH requires 80 credits in total, approximately 45–50 core credits, at least 100 practicum hours, and a capstone project with written and oral components. Its listed concentrations include health leadership and management, health systems and policy, infectious diseases, epidemiologic and biostatistical methods, humanitarian health, nutrition and reproductive health.

  • Prioritise modules and practicum partners that match the intended pathway: epidemiology/data, health policy, programme management, global health, hospital quality, environmental health or behavioural health.
  • Assess whether the programme includes a supervised practicum, a client-based project, a dissertation/capstone and opportunities to use quantitative software.
  • Review each programme’s current module catalogue rather than relying solely on the degree name; course availability and concentration offerings can change.

Application approach for Indian applicants

Apply to each university’s stated system and submit the full evidence package early enough for academic review, scholarship decisions and immigration processing. LSHTM says applications are made online and are considered only after required information and supporting documentation have been provided. Its personal-statement guidance asks applicants to explain why they want to study the programme, how it fits career objectives and what they will contribute as a student.

A practical application file normally needs the items the university specifies: academic transcripts and degree certificate, CV/resumé, statement of purpose, references where requested, English-language evidence or an approved exemption, and any programme-specific quantitative or work-experience evidence. Requirements are programme-specific: Johns Hopkins, for example, treats GRE/GMAT/LSAT/MCAT scores as optional for its MPH but still expects evidence of quantitative/analytical ability through other components.

After receiving an offer, separately meet the destination country’s student-immigration rules. For Canada, the federal government says a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution is required for a study-permit application; from January 1, 2026, master’s and doctoral students attending a public degree-granting institution do not need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, although Quebec requirements still apply.

  • Shortlist programmes by entry requirements, curriculum, applied-learning model, total cost, location and post-study immigration rules—not by rankings alone.
  • Use the university’s own country-equivalency and English-language pages to validate eligibility before paying application or test fees.
  • Keep scanned documents, certified translations where required, and referee details ready; application portals may close while references or verification are pending.

Fees, funding and budget planning

Budget for tuition plus housing, food, health insurance, local transport, books, visa charges, travel and emergency funds. Published tuition is only one component, and both fees and living-cost estimates can change each academic year. As dated examples for 2026/27, LSHTM lists overseas full-time tuition of £31,450 for its MSc Public Health. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health lists annual tuition of US$77,400 for its one-year, 45-credit MPH and estimates total annual cost including indirect costs at US$114,534; these figures illustrate the scale at one US institution, not a typical global MPH price.

Seek funding through the university and external scholarship schemes, but do not assume an award is automatic. Johns Hopkins says MPH applicants admitted to the programme are automatically considered for certain scholarship support, while some named funding opportunities have additional application requirements. Read award eligibility carefully, particularly citizenship/residency rules, minimum credit loads and whether funding covers tuition only or living costs too.

  • Create a country- and university-specific budget in the currency in which fees are charged; include exchange-rate and remittance contingency.
  • Compare refundable versus non-refundable deposits, health-insurance requirements, payment schedules and the financial evidence required for a visa.
  • Use official university cost-of-attendance pages for the intended intake; do not extrapolate last year’s fee or a consultant’s estimate.

Career and further-study options

An MPH can support work in population health, health systems, policy, programme design and evaluation, research, health management and global health, but job eligibility depends on the employer, country, prior experience and any profession-specific licence. Johns Hopkins lists example MPH-related titles including health policy analyst, consultant, hospital quality manager, evaluation associate, grants officer, medical officer and programme manager; these are examples rather than guaranteed outcomes or salary promises.

Possible next steps include public-health roles in government, hospitals, NGOs, multilaterals, research organisations and consulting; specialised postgraduate study such as a PhD or DrPH; or a return to India with applied skills in epidemiology, policy, programme monitoring and health management. For overseas employment, make immigration planning programme-specific. In Canada, a graduate of an eligible designated learning institution may qualify for a post-graduation work permit if all conditions are met; for graduates of master’s degrees, current rules require language evidence at CLB/NCLC 7 and do not impose a field-of-study requirement, but the rules can change.

Where a role is regulated—such as clinical practice—an MPH does not substitute for the country-specific professional registration, licensing or recognition requirements for that regulated occupation.

  • Match electives, capstone and practicum to the target job family before enrolment; this creates a more credible portfolio than the degree title alone.
  • For country-specific work rights, verify the rules immediately before applying for a visa and again before graduation.
  • For doctoral study, prioritise research methods, biostatistics, faculty fit, research output and a substantial capstone or dissertation experience.
